What a cracking start to the second day of NHS Confederation Expo 2024, kicking off with a conversation with The King's Fund CEO, Sarah Woolnough. A couple of remarks that resonated… ‘Looking at the wider system’ - A real recognition that we need to be looking at those wider health determinants if we are going to support citizens and patients. Yes, that’s within the NHS, but also needs to start at the front door of Whitehall in bringing together public sector organisations in unity. ‘Realistic optimism’ - As systems continue to mature with the likes of neighbourhood team working practices and delivering care closer to home, we need to retain a level of ‘realistic optimism’ - there are fantastic innovations being adopted into patient pathways, but we still have huge waiting lists that we need to tackle. #KingsFund #ThinkTank #systemworking

Very interesting piece of research by the Patient Information Forum (PIF) and Ipsos UK. There are clear access challenges and inequalities in the provision of healthcare information, creating fertile ground for the spread of misinformation. In an era of personalised care and enhanced patient choice, healthcare information that is both available and trustworthy is vital to patients.

Who is spanning the gap between healthcare challenges, solutions and how is it funded? The NHS and public care in the UK are facing major challenges that need change to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities, and reduce health inequalities. We all know it. In fact, overall satisfaction with the NHS fell to 24% in 2023. There's a need for a more proactive and preventative approach to health, a focus on breaking down traditional barriers between care organisations, teams, and funding streams, and a recognition of the changing role of the patient in their own care.

KPMG partners with Palantir to address Elective Care backlog for six NHS Trusts - Bath, Salisbury, North Midlands, Lincoln, West Herts and NorthTees https://lnkd.in/ezPjVkEd Many NHS Trusts struggled to understand the true state their backlog, due to challenges with legacy technology infrastructure and disparate unconnected data systems making it harder to establish the waiting list position. Without a trusted single view for waiting patients and theatre sessions, Trusts would struggle to effectively prioritise patients and optimise limited operating theatre capacity. To respond to this challenge NHS England commissioned Palantir to establish the Improving Elective Care Coordination Pilot (IECCP). The IECCP programme created the innovative digital Care Coordination Solution (CCS), built on Palantir’s leading Foundry data software platform. CCS was designed to help Trusts reduce their elective waitlist by giving users intuitive access to all key data in one place. This enabled collaboration across all teams working on the elective pathway, by improving data quality and helping staff to maximise theatre utilisation with improved data driven scheduling. The NHS and Palantir required support in driving maximum adoption of the CCS solution to ensure it delivered it’s promised benefits. Good morning. I have decided to share my experience and learning whilst building a Non-Executive (NED) portfolio career. I hope this will help the many fabulous people I have in my LinkedIn network to consider if this is also a career path that might suit you. I believe that the strongest boards have a diverse range of NEDs on them and by that, I mean diversity in the widest sense not exclusively but also in terms of protected characteristic. In terms of my own niche, what I bring to the board table and what I would like to encourage others to consider bringing to boards also, more women, (slightly) younger and earlier in your career and the perspective and insight from the Voluntary Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector. I started my journey just over 3 years ago and am now a NED/trustee on 2 boards, am going through the vetting process for my first public appointment (will share full details as soon as I can!) and chair an additional advisory committee. This post is all about where to look to find board level opportunities. There are several platform/job boards out there and these are the ones I most frequently look at. I will write a longer post about my experience of being a member of the Women on Boards community soon. For now, Women on Boards UK have a good all round opportunities board and send out a weekly ‘pick of the week’ which I read through on a weekly basis. I’ll share more thoughts about my experience of being part of the Nurole Board Community in another post soon. The more I research the NHS and where they spend the money the more I suspect that more money is not the answer but a fundamental change in how money is spent. The attached research shows how the acute care sector ie hospitals have swallowed nearly all the increased funding leaving primary healthcare and community healthcare starved. Micro sums are spent on health prevention and wellness and the primary care sector funding restricts their operation throwing even more pressure on the ultra expensive hospital sector A return to community health with cottage hospitals or health hubs are a part of the answer. However in return for more funding the primary care sector has to accept more public oversight. A local village school or secondary Acageny has to account to a board of non executives drawn from local community. Every pound spent is subject to scrutiny GP practices have no similar oversight Talking to local GP’s it appears that mistrust of GP’s means that money is allocated in small ring fenced sums with no incentive for efficiency. GP’s refused to join the NHS when first founded and they have remained a private contracted service since Now is time to apply a carrot or a stick and in return for more oversight more of the pie should be spent in the Non acute sector #NHS.

What a fantastic whirlwind of a week! Just completed Module 2 of our Strategy and Innovation Exec PGdiploma at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. It was a rejuvenating experience debating ideas, breaking bread at Exeter College, Oxford and becoming good friends in the process. Our amazing professors Marc J Ventresca and Victor Seidel brought to life how innovation can disrupt an industry and how an organisation can ride the wave. Pinar Ozcan shared her fantastic research on fintechAI and we had the privilege of meeting Dame Frances Ashcroft and discussing her pioneering neonatal diabetes work. So what part does innovation play in a mature industry like the NHS - is it a luxury or a fundamental requirement? I would argue that data driven innovations are disrupting the healthcare industry and embedding these innovations today is the route to financially and operationally sustainable healthcare. We are already seeing gaps in performance between those who leverage the power of assistive technologies and machine learning and those who don’t. As William Gibson says 'The future is already here, its just unevenly distributed'. So what are my key takeaways? 1) Exploit vs Explore - Organizations must balance exploiting existing capabilities (continuous improvement) with exploring new innovations. The ice industry’s failure in the 19th century to recognize refrigeration’s disruptive potential serves as a cautionary tale. Healthcare must continuously explore transformative innovations to address 21st-century challenges. 2) Ambidexterity - Shifting from continuous improvement to continuous innovation requires ambidexterity—simultaneously managing existing operations while exploring new possibilities. This agility ensures adaptation to changing healthcare landscapes. 3) Organisational capabilities - The operationalisation of an innovation strategy also requires building new capabilities and developing your future workforce. We don't know what we don't know so aligning our business model and innovation strategy requires cross industry/ global learning/ Agile sprints and appropriate governance to change behaviours, embed new routines and realise benefits. We are superexcited about embedding Value based care turbocharged with tech and AI to address financial and operational deficits in the NHS. This approach from leading global health systems drives continuous innovation with personalised, predictive and integrated care and is the key to closing the productivity and sustainability gap. It can reduce cost/unit, balance supply/demand and improve outcomes. Innovation isn’t a luxury; it’s essential for sustainable healthcare.
