The realities of scaling a small business shouldn't be kept a secret 🤫 This is an area in which I've had successes and failures from the excitement of thinking we've got a funnel optimised to perfection on Meta, to running out of stock and random fluctuations eroding our profitability overnight. Here's 5 hard truths I've learned across the journey: 1. Scaling isn't linear - Fluctuations are real and it's rarely as simple as month on month growth, despite what survivorship bias from the most successful companies suggests. 2. Marketing Ops is an art - Don't even think about scale until you understand exactly what's required operationally. In e-com this means forecasting different scenarios, getting to grips with required stock and ensuring you have the cash to fund it. 3. Build the right foundations - One of my biggest mistakes has been putting all my energy into paid ads (Meta) up front. This left me at the mercy of cost increases, algorithm changes and fluctuations in creative performance. Always have a foundational channel like SEO or organic social in place and working before you pay to play. 4. Watch / listen to others at your own peril - Don't get me wrong, take advice. But the reality is there's 100 (more) different combinations to scaling your business and what works for another brand isn't necessarily going to slot into your strategy and be as effective. Always think in first principles and refer advice through this mental model to assess WHY it should also work for you. 5. Stay dangerous - Ok, this just sounds cool 😂 but beyond that, it means having the mindset to keep consistent, focused and looking to optimise. Consistency sets you apart from the 99.9%, focusing keeps you efficient and constantly looking for ways to optimise is self explanatory. I'm not particularly keen on them as a business anyway... ...they should know better, being in their position, in their industry. I mean, what sort of message are you putting out? That your website (the world's window to your world) is broken and you don't even know how to get hold of those that made it? Are you for real? It isn't great is it? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ✅ I get that tech is scary ✅ I help small business owners with that ✅ Getting external tech expertise is important ✅ It allows you to focus on what you're good at - - - - - - - - - - - - - ❌ I don't agree with business owners that bury their head because they 'don't do tech' ❌ I don't think it's wise for business owners to be disinterested in tech in their own business and have no knowledge of what's going on ❌ I strongly advise business owners do not fail in building strong relationships with those providing tech expertise ❌ And....Definitely.... do not lose their f#*king contact details you doughnut! 🤣 - - - - - - - - - - - - - 👉 Business owners keep much tighter reigns on digital....when they work with me 💯 I #HelpWithDigital 👈

It's really interesting how sometimes products get used for other things than their intended use case. For some closed beta testers I opened up my reasoning engine, just to show how auto recruit thinks. Well I got a fun Whatsapp message from a friend who copy pasted part of the answer regarding his CV vs a role he should be a good fit for. Afterwards he wrote to me that he knows that stakeholder management is very important for his role and that he actually agrees that it isn't really clear from his CV and he will improve it thanks to auto recruit. Not sure if I want to open the reasoning engine to the public yet, but love to see the creativity! #recruiting #ai

I think it's weird when consultants sell you on a specific platform but don’t use it themselves. You’ll be pleased to know I use Zoho across both my businesses. Firstly, Limitless, my consultancy business where we use it for our: 1️⃣ CRM system. 2️⃣ Sales system. 3️⃣ Client onboarding. 4️⃣ Finance process. 5️⃣ Client support tickets. 6️⃣ Client feedback. As you may have noticed if you've been keeping a close eye on my business's website (https://lnkd.in/eFuWFE-d), there have been significant updates made to it. There's still a long way to go as I update it to be a professional website used as my portfolio as well as my business's (Just Craig Development Ltd) website where customers can contact us about working on their projects. So far, updates have included revamping the home page to give it a more professional look and improving the user interface of the contact form. Along with these updates, I have also moved my blogs to Medium! (For now, only the development blog has been moved - the travel blog will be coming soon!) What will a new government mean for the UK tech sector? The last year has been a tricky time for many in tech 😞 Although no votes have been cast it's looking likely that Labour will form a government on Friday. If they do, what can we expect? 1. Some Certainty? - A stable political environment typically boosts investor confidence, so a new government with a clear majority should be good news 2. The new government needs to grow the economy (many of Labours spending plans rely on them doing so), so they'll be looking to boost innovation and promote startup funding. There may even be tax breaks and more grants to try and catalyse investment and growth 3. Sector specific opportunities - Green / sustainability tech, Healthcare tech, Education tech, should all benefit going by Labours manifesto. AI will continue to thrive. 4. R&D - we may well see increases in research grants and initiatives to promote university and industry collaboration What do you think? What have I missed?

I believe in paying for software. I use lots of it to build & support my habit tracker app “Did You Do it Today?“, and pay for a fair chunk of it. I’m happy to do so, though, as the stuff I pay for really helps me, and it feels good to support the folks & companies building & maintaining it. Software I pay for: • WordPress → Domain name & web hosting, blogging • Bubble → Full stack, no-code development platform (this software is incredible & is the only reason a non-coder like me can build an app like DYDit) • Stripe → Payments processing • Sinch ClickSend → Daily Check-in emailer • SendGrid → Daily Check-in SMS sender • Titan → Customer support emailer • Google Workspace → Spreadsheets, forms, & other emailing • SnagIt → Screen captures & visual designs Software that’s free: • Trello → Idea & task management • Notejoy → Writing • Figma → Visual designs • Microsoft Copilot → AI image generation • Meta AI → AI image generation • Bubble third-party plugins → Visual elements (eg. charts) • LinkedIn → Marketing • Meta Facebook → Marketing • Instagram → Marketing • Twitter → Marketing • Threads → Marketing Holy shit, that’s a lotta software! We use way more in our daily lives than you’d think, and it’s especially amazing how much you use when you’re trying to build a digital business. I’m pretty content with my paid vs. free balance, especially since I could be, in some cases, using a hacked-together free solution for something I pay for. Also, with the way AI is advancing, I’ll be likely be using & paying for even more in the near future. So, like I said, it feels good to pay for software that really helps you. The most dangerous lie in tech isn't 'it works on my machine’. It's “I'm not good at explaining things because I'm too technical.” This excuse is killing careers faster than outdated tech stacks. Let me be blunt: I've watched brilliant developers remain stuck in mid-level positions for years because they couldn't explain their solutions without drowning their audience in technical minutiae. Meanwhile, I've seen decent coders rise to architecture roles because they could translate complexity into clarity. 1st Truth bomb: If you can't explain your technical solution in simple terms, you don't understand it well enough. I learned this the expensive way. Early in my career, I mistook verbosity for depth. I thought all my audiences wanted to know how the watch was built down to each spring. They really just wanted to know the time. Each rambling explanation quietly branded me as someone who couldn't operate at a strategic level. The reality? Clear articulation isn't a 'soft' skill—it's a technical requirement. Every time you: ⦿ Explain a solution architecture ⦿ Debug with a colleague ⦿ Push back on requirements ⦿ Present technical decisions ⦿ Drive clients to more clarity about what they need You're not just communicating. You're demonstrating your ability to process complexity and deliver clarity. 2nd Truth Bomb: You can’t offshore communication skills like that. It comes from a deep understanding of the technical AND business environment AND audience. Want to accelerate your tech career? Stop hiding behind technical complexity. Start treating clear articulation as part of your technical expertise. Agree?

Location - Hybrid, 1/2 days on-site in Leeds. Salary - You know what you're worth, so do I, but it depends how good you are. Please DO NOT apply if you don't have the right to reside and work in the UK. I know you'll be tempted anyway, but please don't. My client is a stealth mode start-up, having secured £8M private funding and no intention, or need to involve PE or VC companies. The product will revolutionise the AI space and I genuinely mean that. If you're available for your next perm role, starting in Jan, read on. It's a pretty fluid situation, so you'll need to be able to roll with that and adapt. Deployment: - Creating scripts that allow for input of customer details and create the necessary resources to allow the AI to work for that specific customer. - Scripts will most likely have to be run within the cloud service provider (AWS or cloud of preference) and within the server itself. - Set up single sign on (SSO) connections to the AI software. Storage: - Creating and managing storage responsible for the data the AI uses which would be independent per customer, as well as storing and managing secure credentials used for authentication. - Cooperating with the rest of the team to create appropriate links to both the front end and the AI backbone. Server: - Creating appropriate server solutions. - Managing resources based on demand. - Managing user sessions with the services (TBC) - Configuring DNS settings and integrating the application within the website (TBC) The end goal is to be able to get the application to a 'one-click' deployment within (ideally) 6 months, or sooner. It is worth noting, the AI function has already been built and it works. It's in test phase and so far, so good. All the above has to be built now with the view to scaling the application to 10,000 then 100,000 end users on a monthly basis. Within 12 months of deployment, I'll be using my network in scale up in the US, to take the users into the MM. It's not a pipedream, it's not only doable, it's going to happen. I need you to have extensive LLM experience, be a Python expert, be able to work under pressure and have built in desktop initially, with an iOS/Android release at a later date, in Cloud not on-prem. The product will be deployed within 3 hours of subscription. Sign, trial, subscribe. Tell your friends, because I also need a Front End with chatbot experience. I'm happy to expand on all those requirements. For both roles, you'll have to be happy to sign an NDA.
