ScottishPower(Iberdrola) subsidiary SP Energy Networks has unveiled a £10.6 billion investment in the UK transmission network after submitting its plans to the Ofgem regulator. SP Energy Networks plans to double its transmission workforce, creating 1,400 new directly employed jobs and supporting another 11,000 in the supply chain. The firm said the investment will “help rewire Britain” and deliver critical electricity infrastructure, including 12 new major substations in Scotland.

Positive to see over 9GW of #renewableenergy projects being cleared at this week's UK renewable energy auction. Particularly good to see a pipeline of over 5GW of #offshorewind projects coming out of this auction, after no projects got through the 2023 auction. Also good to see the continued momentum on solar projects, with over 3GW of projects getting contracts. Commenting on #GBEnergy in the Financial Times. The announcement of a partnership between The Crown Estate and GB Energy is good news for the future of #renewables in the UK. We are particularly encouraged by the commitment to reform the policy framework to reduce the time it takes to bring offshore wind projects to fruition, as this is something UKSIF and our members have been calling for for some time. Cutting project timelines is crucial to get investment flowing into UK renewables again, after many investors have been historically put off the UK because of unworkably long project wait-times, effectively starving the UK of investment.   The decision to have the public sector take on additional early development work is a positive move that will reduce risk for developers and attract greater private investment. One barrier this will not solve is the current inadequacy of our #gridconnections, which we know remains a major barrier to investment. The anti-cyclone combined with heavy cloud cover weather patterns provided much of Europe with low resource levels to energise both #wind and #solar over the first two weeks of November. There is a route to build predictable dispatch of electricity from the UK abundance of #tidal energy in the form of #tidalstream and #tidalbarage. Combined capacity is in the region of 45GW and works positively with #bess and #ldes solutions. The gif below shows the impact of spring and neap tides taking place every 7 days providing predictable dispatch 365 days of the year. If we are looking for joined up thinking to re-energise UK ports and heavy industries we have a small number of world leading UK players in this market to deliver power quickly in a short period relative to #nuclear. RJ McLeod has been unveiled as one of SP Energy Networks' preferred partners to its record £5.4bn supply chain contract programme, helping the network operator to deliver the biggest rewiring of the GB electricity grid since its inception. The programme, with its long term commitments and willingness from all parties to work together, will allow RJ McLeod to continue to leave a positive legacy of employment as well as investment in our workforce, our local supply chain, and the communities in which we work. For every euro invested in renewables, the #EU needs to invest 50 cents into grid infrastructure. In Asia, I imagine that ratio will be higher, at least 1:1. Solar and wind capacity has grown to ~50% of #grid peak loads, and will edge towards 100% as renewables capacity increases. That represents a conservative investment of ~US$2.5 trillion ($2t for grids, $0.5t for storage) over the next decade, according to Wood Mac. #Renewables + older grids is like trying to eat soup with a teaspoon. Technically, it works, but if you could use a tablespoon or even a soup spoon (!) it'd be far more efficient. In Europe you might see #curtailment (energy that the grid can't use because of overcapacity - wasted energy) of ~2.5-3%, in China ~4%, in Vietnam that figure could be as high as 50% for some projects. Most developers expect/tolerate some curtailment (~3%), but the higher the curtailment the worse the projects economics - meaning financing is harder and/or more expensive. The obstacles and solutions are well-known. Better market designs, centralised planning, and an increase in the amount and speed of capital deployment (perhaps enhanced with private capital) can ensure that Asia's grids 1) accelerate electricity accesssibility, and 2) minimise any wastage.

Market brief - 9th July Rachel Reeves spoke of the need to “unblock” infrastructure projects and encourage private investment in public projects. She plans end the ban on onshore wind farms and re-introduce house-building targets. The Chief Executive of the industry body, Offshore Energies UK, said the sector and investors were deeply concerned over Labour's plans for a windfall tax on energy companies. Starmer is due in Washington for a NATO Summit and we can expect his position on Gaza to come under closer scrutiny. Over in the US there are growing fears that the Fed may have over-egged the pause in monetary policy. Powell has said that he wants the Fed to make pro-active decisions on monetary policy, rather than being forced to change rates due to economic conditions, but fewer jobs were created in Q2 than Q1 and GDP is expected to be lower in Q2 than Q1, so those concerns are creeping into the conversation. There have been some violent clashes in France as a left-wing coalition won the parliamentary elections, beating Le Pen’s far-right National Rally into third place but the Euro remains relatively unaffected, closing around 1.0825 yesterday. GBP was around 1.2810 against USD 1.1830 against EUR and EURUSD was around 1.0830 on the open. #Finance #FxPlew #news

Government’s CFD Round 6 allocation announcement represents a strong upturn for the #renewables market following the hiatus of offshore wind allocations last year. We're playing catch-up, but it's a great start. Now, it must be followed up with similarly positive outcomes to help us meet 2030 targets.   With more than half of the allocation going to offshore wind, it's critical we accelerate the transformation of our energy network to bring power onshore and where it’s needed. As renewable penetration into the market increases, so too does the need to address local peak loads, renewable intermittency and grid stability. We need to meet local needs without a return to fossil fuel peaking plants. We need to be able to provide power when the wind drops and it’s cloudy, and to maintain grid frequency control.   Local storage and generation, backed up by grid scale storage offers the ability to meet all three challenges. Local storage and local smart networks as well as small and mini/micro modular reactors can provide local and regional generation. Pumped and long duration energy storage (LDES) provide the means to avoid bringing on fossil fuel generation at the #grid level.   At Stantec, we welcome the Government’s step forward in Round 6 and are encouraged by the positive noises around SMRs and LDES. We would support the government in further committing to the nuclear industry with both large and small scale generation projects being backed, and for them to press ahead with the role out of the Cap and Floor Mechanism for LDES in the UK. Accepted one weeks data is not representative of annual production figures. However, the North East of Scotland is often over looked as a place for #solar deployment with its annual production not too dissimilar to East Midlands. In periods of #dunkelflaute, the north south geographical spread for #solar production is a useful mitigant - see sunshine hours below. Oddly, the handbrake on its development for large scale connections is the Scottish TNUoS charges killing project returns. This is made all the more frustrating as the #wind and #solar is largely non-correlated. Additionally, the #solar summer production profile in the far North extends into the shoulder hours when projects in the South are past peak. Reform of use of system #grid costs needs addressing using an open book and holistic approach.
