As one of the world’s largest orbital motorways, carrying 15% of the UK’s motorway traffic[1], any maintenance closures of the M25 must be carefully planned to avoid major disruption. As a result, having real-time, easily accessible and accurate data on the structural condition of all bridges and key infrastructure on the motorway is essential. That’s why Mabey Hire’s structural monitoring technology was recently deployed. The Merstham Viaduct is on one of the motorway’s busiest interchanges, forming a vital part of the south-east strategic road network between the M25 and M23. When routine inspections of the viaduct’s bearing pads took place in early 2022, questions were raised regarding the degree of movement the bearings were permitting and whether in fact they might have fused solid. As a result, Mabey Hire was contracted by Octavius Infrastructure to supply a range of its structural monitoring equipment. Working closely with Octavius Infrastructure, Allan Martin, Mabey Hire’s Senior Monitoring Engineer, devised a bespoke package of sensors which he personally supervised the installation of. Self-driving vehicles could be on British roads in just two years after the Automated Vehicles (AV) Act became law this week. The AV Act enables advanced #technology to safely drive vehicles on British roads. The law will require self-driving vehicles to achieve a level of safety at least as high as ‘careful and competent’ human drivers, as well as meeting rigorous safety checks before being allowed onto roads. While the bill becoming law is a landmark event, there is still much to do in the self-driving arena, especially on access to #data. Here’s our takeaways from the Commercial Vehicle Show, which is currently underway at Birmingham's NEC.    From an innovations perspective, #zeroemission technology dominated. There were some really interesting developments from SAIC Motor, Canoo and Munro Vehicles - with great visibility for their #zeroemission vehicles.   It’s great to see that sustainability is at the forefront of the UK's largest road freight transport and logistics event. What’s also exciting are the number of up and coming developers presenting their zero emission solutions, challenging traditional commercial vehicle manufacturers to think hard about how they can help fleet managers meet 2035 emissions deadlines.   #TheCVShow #freight #roadtransport #fleetmanagement #logisitcs #tradeshow #transportmanager #transportoperators
