How likely are doctors across Europe to engage with pharmaceutical or medical device advertisements that have been personalized for them? This is something to be celebrated!!! Having been on both sides of pitches in pharma over the last 20 years, I've seen a worrying trend in recent times in the way pitches are run. Unclear briefs, ridiculous timelines, poor communication, low quality feedback or worse, no feedback at all. There also seems to be an attempt by some companies to procure professional agency services like consumables - a race to the bottom on hourly rate rather than looking at quality and value. It just makes no sense to me. I think many companies have no idea of the time and money agencies spend on pitching, let alone how stressful it can be. Kudos to the PM Society, Consilient Health and Vini Sethi for leading the way in signing the Pitch Positive Pledge 👏 . Here's hoping many others follow your lead. #pharma #agency #procurement

Having spent nearly 8 years in the CDMO headhunting space, I have seen first-hand the importance of offering fair and competitive salaries to candidates. Whilst I appreciate balancing budgets is crucial, lowballing on salary offers can have significant negative repercussions. Here's why: 1. CAR-T: A Breakthrough with Complex Challenges 🌟 Working closely with a number of companies who specialise in CAR-T therapies I have gained a real appreciation of just how complex and difficult it is for Pharma companies to deliver this innovative treatment to patients: CAR-T therapy stands as one of the most thrilling advancements in modern drug development. It offers a beacon of hope for patients with certain types of cancers by harnessing the power of the immune system. However, the journey from lab to bedside is fraught with complexities for pharmaceutical companies manufacturing these treatments. One of the foremost challenges is the highly personalized nature of CAR-T therapy. Each treatment is tailored to the individual patient, involving a bespoke production process where T-cells are extracted, modified, and then reintroduced into the patient's body. This personalization demands meticulous precision and coordination, significantly differing from the standardized processes seen in traditional drug manufacturing. Furthermore, the logistical demands are immense. First, there is the requirement for state-of-the-art facilities that can comply with rigorous regulatory standards across different countries. Secondly, maintaining the viability of cells throughout the modification process and ensuring their safe delivery back to the patient is a logistical feat. This involves sophisticated tracking systems and cold-chain logistics to preserve cell integrity. Lastly, the financial aspect cannot be overlooked. Headlining this week's CHC Newsflash: TPG and Blackstone have partnered to work on a joint bid for Bausch + Lomb, according to the UK Financial Times, citing people familiar with the matter. The newspaper reported last month that the eye care business was working with Goldman Sachs advisers to explore a sale. This attracted interest from other private equity groups including Advent International, KKR, CVC Capital and Hellman & Friedman, although they have dropped out of the running, according to sources. Private Equity is becoming the dominant player in our industry’s M&A. I’ve spoken to several firms in the past few weeks, who tell a similar story: healthcare is an important growth pillar, but most are underweight in consumer health and with a little gentle persuasion can readily see our charms. Now TPG and Blackstone are looking to make a bid for Bausch’s eyecare subsidiary, while CD&R and PAI are scrapping over who will take majority control of Sanofi’s CHC business. With very few exceptions, M&A doesn’t grow the market, those exceptions being related to companies with underdeveloped or neglected brands – and we see plenty of those in our own M&A boutique. Financial institutions bring rigour to the companies they own, but this often involves cutting out longer-term NPD, especially Rx-to-OTC Switch, and brand-building. But where PE excels is using a “buy to build” strategy to give a marketer international scale. Cooper is a fine example, and its PE owner CVC championed the acquisition of the Viatris OTC business which has put Cooper on the European map in a substantial way. But Private Equity is not a long-term market builder. For that we have to search for a different type of company, such as Valbiotis, which launched its first product in 2024 after many years of basic research. This truly innovative product is a 100% natural dietary supplement for the management of mild-to-moderate LDL hypercholesterolemia and is a good example of what the future holds for evidence-based VMS brands. To quote co-founder Sébastien PELTIER: “Valbiotis has all the attributes to … establish itself as a future European champion in 100% plant-based dietary supplements with strong scientific credentials.” It is not surprising that the company is in advanced discussions with a view to signing international licensing agreements with players in the nutrition and healthcare sectors. Bringing these to a successful conclusion will be a template for serious competitors at the cutting edge of VMS. Absolutely thrilled to take up the post as Head of Corporate Affairs for AstraZeneca UK. I’m proud to work for a company that shows every day the power of ‘What science can do’, and is deeply invested in the UK across R&D, manufacturing, and NHS partnerships.  We are transforming many of the most pressing challenges in healthcare today. From cancer, heart failure and chronic kidney disease, to asthma and rare disease. 2025 promises to be a year of opportunity for the NHS and life sciences, with a 10 Year Health Plan, Life Sciences Sector Plan, and Innovation & Adoption Strategy all due. But we all know that plans on paper don’t in themselves change much. That’s why the hundreds of partnerships we have across the UK with the NHS are so important – in so many cases these partnerships are the ‘left shift’ in practice. Working with the NHS to find disease earlier and, whenever possible, stop disease in its tracks. The essay question now is how to take these practice changing partnerships in areas of brilliance and use the 2025 opportunities to wire the system to deliver that change at scale. While there is so much to do, I now have the absolute privilege of leading the best team in the business (we won an award saying so, so it must be true) who have a brilliant record of story telling that changes behaviours, patient group partnerships that improve outcomes, and policy change that powers equitable treatment. Can’t wait for 2025 – after a mince pie or two…

It’s been an insightful day at the Patient Centricity & Engagement Conference in London. There has been extensive discussion around how and when to involve patient advocacy groups, what companies mean when they say patients (or do they mean advocacy groups), how to overlay the nuances of patient experiences onto clinical data and how can all this improve patient experience and outcomes? We've just published a report which demonstrates just how valuable industry clinical trials are to the UK. Key takeaways are (2022 data) ⭐ industry clinical trials contributed £7.4 billion to the UK economy   ⭐ the NHS benefits from £1.2 billion in direct revenue from clinical trials   ⭐ industry clinical trials created 65,000 jobs overall, and 13,000 of those were in the NHS   There were wider benefits of industry clinical trials too.   ✅ Patients at research-active Trusts tend to see shorter hospital stays, and experience better care   ✅ Research-active trusts tend to have lower mortality rates   ✅ Participation in research also raises job satisfaction for clinicians - this is crucial   In short, industry clinical trials are a good thing and we need more of them.   The economy and jobs contributions were achieved despite the decline in industry clinical trials in recent years.   If industry clinical trial activity returned to levels comparable with 2017, an increase of 40 per cent on 2022 activity, the benefits to the UK would be even greater. An extra £3 billion would be contributed to the economy including an additional £486m of revenue to the NHS. This would support 26,000 more jobs, including 5000 more in the NHS.   How to deliver? The government is already doing a lot of work on this – but we can do more. Our immediate asks are:   🙏 Bring the outstanding clinical trials legislation into law. This is legislation that the UK needs to give companies certainty on how to operate in the UK   🙏 Accelerating delivery of the O’Shaughnessy review recommendations and investing at least an additional £60 million per year in workforce capacity and stimulating industry clinical research in primary care.   This would go alongside the £300 million that industry will contribute to boosting delivery of trials through the Voluntary scheme for medicines Pricing, Access and Growth (VPAG) Investment Programme.
