I had the pleasure of joining Lou Paskalis, Tim Brown and the Association of National Advertisers to attempt to move the needle on buying quality media in lieu of cheap CPM inventory of questionable origin. Our panel dialogue, "Is the Programmatic Juice Worth the Squeeze," concluded it is because, among other things, quality media produces outcome metrics that matter. Drilling in specifically on news media -- a publishing category that continues to be in a world of hurt, Lou writes in AdExchanger that "... many presenters attempted to debunk the myth that brands that advertise adjacent to divisive or provocative content risk exposing themselves to backlash. Stagwell Global released research that showed virtually no difference in purchase intent for brands when their ads appeared next to editorial content, whether it was inflammatory or not. The question remains: Will marketers overcome their gut feelings in light of compelling research to the contrary?" I am always encouraged by this type of research, but I've come to expect that I'll be discouraged by the lack of change in media spend across trusted, professional journalism. IMHO, what we need to demonstrate *in addition to* these consumer sentiment findings is the hard data that shows equal or better RoAS (or other measurable outcome metrics) in the news content category. Evidence supports my hypothesis of better results in news vs. other content categories. For example, one recent TRUSTX advertiser experienced a 2.5x decrease in cost-per-acquisition on a campaign that was 59% targeted within news domains. News works because it's a lean-in environment where the audience is actively engaged. I am begging brands to give news a second chance. And not because its any advertiser's duty to save journalism, but because the stuff just works.

As CTV viewership is thriving, this is causing a problem (albeit a good one) on how to effectively reach consumers wherever they are streaming. 60% of people in the UK have up to three streaming services (The Trade Desk CTV Report 2024), whilst the proliferation and ease of access of AVOD and FAST services is ever increasing viewing opportunities - for example LG Channels saw a 120% increase in monthly average users (LG Ad Solutions The Big Shift: (Wave II)). Just as viewers are spoilt for choice, as marketers we’re spoilt for opportunities to reach them. We're being hampered though due to the fragmented nature of activating in different environments, which in turn limits aggregated addressability. SVOD subscriptions are in ~20mm households in the UK, with a lot of discussion around the big players, but their ad-tier household penetration still has some way to go: Netflix’s ad-tier is just shy of 10%, whilst Disney+ is less than 3% (Barb Audiences Establishment Survey Q2 2024). Prime nailed their ads-by-default approach with little kickback (probably due to minimal ads for the time being and the wider Amazon offering), but consumers do not stick with just one platform. These still require being bought in silo even via DSP activations. For CTV campaigns to scale, a multitude of partners across the ecosystem need to be part of the media plan to ensure your target audiences can be reached effectively and at scale. To do this, you need to work with a partner that has the ability to plan, activate, and measure across multiple partners in a seamless, aggregated manner to maximise scale. This comes in three parts: data, technology, and insights. In the #mediaforequity landscape, #UK broadcasters are another group that sees great potential. Channel 4 and ITV have each set up investment divisions and taken stakes in several up-and-coming consumer companies like Purplebricks and Carwow in return for advertising inventory. Smaller broadcasters such as S4C are also making forays into the industry, with a recent investment into #semiconductor company Kubos. Media for equity seems poised to become a key revenue stream for broadcasters and media outlets, amid economic downturns and declining TV ad spending. While #venture investments are usually seen as high-risk, high-reward, executives maintain that these deals are carefully calculated, "sensible and informed", helping broadcasters support emerging businesses while leveraging their advertising capabilities. As such, we could see "more of these smaller investments potentially high returns," says Laura Franses, head of S4C's new commercial growth fund. Article by Jane Croft for The Guardian.
