Update: The consultation on Invest 2035, the UK’s modern industrial strategy asks: What UK government policy solutions could best address barriers relating to people and skills? What more could be done to achieve a step change in employer investment in training in the growth-driving sectors? UK productivity growth is dependent on updating the skills of the workforce and getting millions from welfare into work. But the pace of change has overtaken the thinking of those who put bureaucratic accountability and academic values ahead of the needs of employers and students. Policy changes requiring legislation are unlikely to produce results before 2028. The role of the new intake of MPs in helping organise local skills partnerships and removing barriers to voluntary co-operation across current funding silos is therefore critical if they want to be re-elected. The round table will begin with an introduction to the consultation and there will be an opportunity afterwards to discuss submissions and follow up with the relevant officials. The format will be similar to last year when the Group hosted a round table with invitations to over 30 APPGs interested in skills and employment, including equality and diversity of access. The Round Table will therefore begin with an introduction to the consultation on the Skills stream of "Invest 2035" and end with discussion on how to input views and work together on joining up local partnerships - that will increasingly need to cross the boundaries of Welfare to Work, Skills England, Modernising Employment, Right to Work to meet the for diversity of needs of pupils, students, parents and employers (including public sector like the NHS and Central and Local Government). we cannot fight climate change, if we can't stop killing each other. one year on from launching their Just Transition Plan, Jacob Heitland and the London Borough of Newham team have made real progress in tackling the climate crisis's disproportionate impact on the people of the borough. we caught up, on year on, & Jacob rightly emphasised the gravity of the global situation, which overshadows their local efforts. the carbon footprint of war is a stark reality: ↳ global militaries' emissions equal 85% of all passenger car emissions worldwide. ↳ bombing campaigns, like those in gaza, release massive amounts of CO₂ – the october 2023 to february 2024 bombing emitted up to 652,000 metric tons, exceeding 26 countries' annual emissions. however, jacob and i believe that by protecting our resilience and supporting each other, we can persist in this fight. if we work together, our collective actions can have a significant impact. we can inspire positive social change, creating a ripple effect that changes the world for the better. no matter how bleak it is, today is a new day, you owe the fight left in your body to the rest of us.

Powering the creative and digital sector I am very pleased that the methods and results of the applied research I led on 'Creative Ramsgate' (see the full report on my LI page) are feeding into this new work in West Sussex led by my long-term associate James Byford at Adventures and Wisdom Institute where I am an Advisory Board member. My current focus includes connecting applied research on different creative and digital ecosystems to support their development in the UK especially as part of new partnership work to supercharge socioeconomic impacts. This draws on the Brighton 'FuseBox' project (see full report on my LI page) developing creative and digital innovators that I led and worked on with James Byford as well as similar work I have undertaken in South Wales, London and Kent. Key findings about creative and digital sector include: - Place-making is an intrinsic part of building ecosystems. - Supportive networks are vital to share learning, problem-solve and create paths to success. - Entrepreneurs learn best from each other's stories of success and failure. - Policy and economic strategies need to address the full range of SME needs from the independent practitioner to the bigger venture. - Upscaling is a major challenge at all levels and advice needs to be fit for purpose and cover strategy and timing as much as investment issues. Existing as well as this new applied research in West Sussex is relevant to policymakers at all levels as well as investors and others keen to see new creative and digital ecosystems develop and thrive. I am grateful to my constantly evolving networks across research, policy, start-up and investment sectors for the inspiration and learning they bring. 😱 The things that keep a facilitator up at night 😱 I'm writing this from the Eurostar, heading to Belgium to #facilitate a 2 day climate strategy event with over 100 people. I have been running through the final session plans, checking and re-checking that the activities make sense, rustling through my bag to make sure that I definitely did pack the right box of name badges, and obsessively refreshing my browser to make sure that the Mentimeter is set up right. This 2 day event has been in preparation for five months. Like a lot of big events, a huge amount of work goes into making sure it runs smoothly. And yet, as a facilitator, there are some things you can’t control, and that you just have to trust you will be able to navigate should they come to pass. ➡️ Like the time the building I was running a workshop in had its water shut off by Thames Water, so there was no running water (or loo access!) ➡️ Or the time I got COVID two days before running an in person team away day ➡️ Or the time the venue I had booked failed their health and safety test three days before the event ➡️ Or the time my wifi totally cut out 5 minutes into a 2 hour workshop and refused to come back on ➡️ Or the time a landslide meant my train was so delayed that I was 3 hours late for my own event What you learn in these situations - the kind that keep you up at night if you're an anxious pup like me -  is that people are generally very accommodating, especially if they can see that what’s happened is beyond your power and control. They, and you, will find a way to navigate through it! Luckily these events don’t happen often. And, while I can’t teach you how to respond when catastrophe strikes, I can teach you some brilliant skills and tools that will help you facilitate like a pro the rest of the time! 𝐆𝐁 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲...𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥 It was great to spend time with Chair of Great British Energy Juergen Maier CBE FRS FREng this morning, hearing first hand his perspectives on GBE’s scope, ambition and challenges. I was able to share details about the Chamber, our work on behalf of members and role in the regional economic partnership. And to reinforce that the globally unique energy eco-system in the North-east of Scotland is already progressing the transition agenda and stands ready to support GBE in turbocharging our future energy ambitions. Of course, I caveated this by discussing the potential ‘gap’ that was being caused by current oil & gas fiscal policy and rhetoric that risks seeing the capital, people, supply chain businesses and equipment needed to accelerate clean energy projects in the North Sea being lost overseas or perhaps altogether. We discussed our submission to the Great British Energy Bill Call for Written Evidence and the work being led by British Chambers of Commerce on securing the long-term future for North Sea energy production. I reiterated that the AGCC team is here to support GBE in any way we can. From convening the supply chain to communicating key messages through our media channels. From sector research to providing collateral to attract staff to relocate here. And from playing a role in inward investment activity to advising on future office accommodation. On the latter point, I was delighted to hear Juergen confirm his commitment to support our efforts to reenergise and repopulate Aberdeen city centre by locating the GBE HQ there.
