📢 New LoCEL-H2 publication available! Prof Dani Strickland and Dr Jonathan Wilson, our green hydrogen experts from Loughborough University, co-authored this paper presenting the group's evaluation of lead-acid battolysers as a possible route to cleaner cooking in sub-Saharan Africa. In this study, they employed simulations and multi-objective optimisation to compare the lead-acid battolyser producing hydrogen as a cooking fuel (“hCooking”) to electric cooking options (“eCooking”) and to charcoal. 💡 Results show that to make the battolyser a more viable solution, focus should be on extending its lifetime as far as possible, cheaper photovoltaic systems and improved hydrogen burner efficiencies. In this case study for the University of Bath Institute for Policy Research (IPR), Dr Stephen Allen, the programme lead for Sustainable Engineering Materials at iCAST (Innovation Centre for Applied Sustainable Technologies), explains how he has engaged #policymakers with his #research and offers advice to other #academics hoping to do the same. Caldona,  Rigoberto Advincula* "We fabricated PVA hydrogel systems, which are both magnetic- and NIR-responsive. All the other components, including PPy, PNIPAM, ferrous and ferric salts, and the aiming drug, were combined in a one-step fashion. PVA and magnetic ion (MION) salts contribute to the framework, while the cooperation between PPy nanoparticles and PNIPAM realizes the NIR-controlled release function. The PPy nanoparticles generate heat upon NIR illumination. Once the system's temperature rises above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PNIPAM, the extended coiled PNIPAM chain shrinks to a collapsed, frizzy clew conformation. As a result, the gap between the frames is enlarged, and the encapsulated drug is released. In this work, we studied the relationship between PVA and MIONs. We investigated the drug release and magnetic behavior of the NIR-responsive magnetic gel (NRMG) beads under the influence of NIR illumination."
