The West Midlands Health and Wellbeing Innovation Network, part of the University of Warwick, are running a challenge led innovation programme with University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) which aims to provide a solution to digital consent with consideration to health inequalities and patient communication. The challenges statements we are looking to solve are: 1. How might we ensure our patients understand their procedure in a flexible and accessible way to consent and respect that by recording the process accurately? 2. How might we provide information in varied formats in a culturally appropriate way that can be understood by all? 3. A new plan is being introduced to significantly reduce the use of single use medical devices in healthcare services. The government has launched a major initiative to cut NHS waste and save millions annually, redirecting funds to frontline care. The new Design for Life strategy aims to drastically reduce single use medical devices, which contribute significantly to the 156,000 tonnes of clinical waste generated in England each year. The plan emphasises reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling, while reducing reliance on foreign imports. Disposable devices, including high cost items like £500 harmonic shears, are frequently discarded after one use. Companies are already remanufacturing such products safely and cost-effectively. The government will incentivise more innovation like this, updating procurement rules to favour sustainable solutions and highlighting waste cutting successes in NHS hospitals. Currently, £10 billion is spent annually on medical technology, much of it imported via fragile supply chains. The shift to a circular economy could create 500,000 UK jobs and inject £75 billion into the economy by 2030, supported by the Circular Economy Taskforce, which promotes greener, resource smart practices.

Tucked away in the back of the latest NHS England board papers is a dry document with big consequences: “The purpose of these Directions is to require NHS England to collect and analyse information in order to implement automated granular daily data collections to replace and rationalise existing, less regular local and national data flows, and national aggregated data collections”. Phew. You have to plough on almost to the end, to see how this fits in with everything else. “The data will be collected, pseudonymised and made available through the national instance of the Federated Data Platform” (FDP). The use of which, as we now know, is being made mandatory. The NHS’s experience of granular data collections has not been an entirely happy one. Every NHS trust has different core IT systems, and even when they are the same brand they are inevitably configured differently. So when ‘the centre’ hands out a specification and says ‘submit that’, what they get back from the NHS is inconsistent data with bits missing. And yet they’re doing it again. “The requirements specifications contain the detail of individual collections that NHSE will be directed to collect and analyse”, says the dry document. Does this mean that trusts are forever stuck with unreliable national data and poor analysis? Not necessarily - there is a way out, and it is under trusts’ control. By thoroughly standardising their data before submitting it, trusts can ensure it will be reliable and useful after it comes back from the FDP. If this sounds too good to be true, it isn’t . We have been doing this for decades, and it works. If you drop us a line, then we’ll be happy to talk through how it would work for you.
