National Care Service, Employment Rights Bill (ERB), Social Care Workforce Strategy, Devolution, Fair Work Agency (a SUPER regulator), Skills England, GB Energy... All topics covered in expert detail at the excellent APSCo Business Forum hosted by Brabners in Manchester yesterday. Thank you to host and expert panelist Simon Whitehead for his POV and insights, and to all the APSCo team for theirs, Tania Bowers & Moya Rylands. Some detail... It all said to me, recruit with CONFIDENCE. The implications for recruitment and HR management in #socialcare are fascinating but the nitty gritty (subject to consultation) realistically says; so long as you are an #employerwhocares, set out clear expectations and follow fair processes, you have little or nothing to fear! Regarding Zero Hours Contracts, implications for #HomeCare providers must require changes to LA booking and funding, to ensure average 12 week rates can be offered where zero hours is the norm. Otherwise, they'll simply boost big providers at the expense of SME's, which is and cannot be the aim for the reason of (...see conclusion below). Regarding the ERB. Much drama is being made of Unfair Dismissal Rights from day one. With no suggestion of changes to Statutory Notice and/or PILON, simply make clear what the expectations are in month's 1, 2 and 3, check, document & decide. It's a tiny few who don't already. In short, no drama. The National Care Service, a fantastic aspiration, intertwined with honourable intentions such as Collective Pay Agreements will require lengthy consultation and sector engagement. Otherwise they won't become reality without also being competition killers i.e. the NMW/Living Wage (increased ~20% in the last 2 years) topic is most significant for workers. Whereas #employerswhocare must make their voices heard on Worker vs Temporary Worker vs Self Employed status changes, including the related implications of IR35 & Tax. This stuff is separate to the ERB and already watered down! For me, the BIGGEST opportunity of the lot sits in the Skills England piece and the proposed shake up of Apprenticeships. If we could get impactful skills based training funded, not just lengthy qualifications with (sometimes excessive) theory, I think that would be best for national productivity. This raises questions like, what qualifies as a fundable short course? What standard of trainer could/should be supported? Exactly how impactful is e-learning? What is the place of e-learning in this picture (with implementation being key)? Interested in the thoughts of Samantha Atkins, Roy Ripper, Mitch Sullivan, Dave Lewis, David Davies on those Q's. There's one reason underpinning all these conclusions. ALL future funding decisions depend on economic growth because the existing budget is fully committed. Which explains why, along with 6500 new teachers, we're also getting 5000 new Taxmen.

📢 📢 📢 ATTENTION ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO "GIVE BACK" Today I was at a brilliant event with Solent Careers Hub which brought Enterprise Advisers from across the county together! What is an Enterprise Adviser I hear you ask??! ⭐ Enterprise Advisers are volunteers who work with local #schools to help them prepare their young people for work. ⭐ This is done via a variety of means such as giving talks, workshops, leaning on commercial contacts who might be able to give an experience or time to the schools (apprenticeships and other options). ⭐ In a country where there are over half a million young people unemployed we really can help make a difference. It doesn't have to be groundbreaking, just being an ally is sometimes enough! ⭐ EA's on average give 8 hours a month to fulfil this role! ⭐ What's in it for you? This morning was my first meeting and I was so lucky to be seated with some truly lovely people and we had the opportunity to introduce ourselves and network. I met Claire Hogan who works in Maritime as a Consultant, has amazing hair and is supporting a school in the city of Southampton. Claire spoke very passionately about mock interviews she has been involved with recently, I can learn from her. I met David Swieton who's integrated well into another Southampton school and works for the local authority in Employment & Skills and has kindly offered to share his experiences with me - I look forward to that coffee. I met Neil Clark MCIPS who is a supply chain manager and "helps people solve problems they didn't know they had".... really nice guy who works with Eastleigh College and I really like his solutions focused approach. I know I can learn a lot here. ⭐ Do you have plans to work with the local community as part of your ESG commitments? The last day of April. What has your small business been working on this month? I have been working with small businesses in healthcare and local to me in Stone, Staffordshire on the changes they have needed to make to their business process and practice, updating their policies and handbooks to ensure they are completely up to date and legally compliant following the employment law changes earlier this month. I have shared the activity which small businesses need to do following the Employment Law changes below so you can see the type of work I have been doing for my clients as they don't have any in-house HR or anyone with the ability to complete HR activity. Why have my clients asked me to do this? They want to be legally compliant. They want to offer their employees the best possible working environment. They want to ensure their people managers have up to date knowledge to support their teams. Well yesterday was a fab little day ☕👩‍💻 jam packed with a coaching 1:1 with my client, a handover call with my new VA, a couple action planning calls, delivering a webinar for Network Marketing School on how to maximise your time and beat procrastination, working on bits behind the scenes for Monday’s “90-day planning workshop”… In amongst all of that, I only had a couple hours in the day for other ‘work’. But you know what? Despite being packed, I still managed to do the “needle movers”.  You know, the tasks that actually matter and take things forward. 🙅‍♀️ I didn’t waste time on the things that didn’t matter 🙅‍♀️I didn’t panic that I didn’t have enough time because I had planned ahead so I knew what I could and couldn’t fit in 🙅‍♀️ I didn’t ‘make more time’ by skipping the workout, breaks or scrimp on sleep Yep, I even took time away from the laptop to eat my dinner (I used to be so bad at that which just gave me IBS ad anxiety). Sidenote: if you were wondering I had a craving for something with gravy – definitely something I miss from home whilst I am in Cambodia lol. 🤝 Had a great morning at an event at Knights with North Cheshire Chamber of Commerce & Synergy Recruitment Ltd focussed on the Employment Rights Bill & inclusive recruitment practices. The discussions around the proposed legal changes to Employment Law and building truly diverse workplaces were both timely and thought-provoking. Special shoutout to my new friend and professional confidante Lorraine Fitzpatrick who also attended. It's amazing how a chance meeting just 4 weeks ago has blossomed into such a valuable connection. They say some of the best professional relationships start with genuine chemistry, and I couldn't agree more! The event reinforced a few things: 💚 My love for Employment Law (The 18 year old Law student in me would have been proud) ⚖️ How interesting the legal landscape for Employers will be over the next couple of years. 📔Practical suggestions for employers and us, HR professionals, to start thinking about in preparation for the proposed changes. 💪 How vital it is to create workplaces where everyone can thrive.
