A few months ago, I completed the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) course on Efficient Editing, taught by the expert editor Hester Higton! It reminded me that our job as editors is to do the best possible work we can, given the time we have. It also taught me how I might better use my data to plan the work, stay on track, and adjust. Have I mastered all this after taking the course? Of course not 😄 I'm still struggling to get better estimating the time I need to complete each project and making myself stick to what the document needs (and not indulge in doing more). But I do feel I have more direction and ideas on how to get better. I highly recommend the course to fellow editors! (I don't see it on the CIEP website right now—perhaps because it's not open for enrollment at moment?) #CPD #AmEditing #AmLearning #Edibuddies

I've just realised that while today is cool (currently), tomorrow will be rough (27 degrees) - and monday hideous (30 ) due to my #HeatIntolerance #PoTS. For me, the more I attempt when it's too hot, the longer it takes me to recover. So if I'm able to hibernate, I have a rough time during the heatwave - but return to 'my normal' fairly quickly afterwards. If I push myself it can take days - even weeks to get back to my normal. This means I've just done some re-planning. I'll be doing more today, so that I can have 2 days where I can hibernate (and probably watch lots of olympics) to reduce the impact of the heat. And because I'll be hibernating for a couple of days, I will also have the muscle-recovery time that should mean, if I get the balance right, there's a good chance that once it cools down again I'll have recovered from the busy day, and will quickly recover from the heat. (Also, sometimes I feel silly about how often I check the weather forecast. Now I feel justified that it is actually very important information that has a big impact on my decisions, and enables me to manage my health as well as possible. Copypolish? Copyedit? Tone of Voice review? Proofread? Proofedit? WTF do I need and why?! (and a cool picture of medieval copyediting). As big design projects such as websites and annual or sustainability reports progress, we're often asked by companies what the difference is between a copypolish and a proofread? And why bother? Check out our handy guide to what's what, helping you to decide what you need: 1. Copyedit - first step after writing. Ensuring content flows, aligns with messaging and is clear and well-written. Will generate lots of questions to check meaning, verification and ensures you answer the 'So What?' 2. Copypolish - step after substantive editing. Identifying and fixing errors related to spelling and grammatical typos, tone and style inconsistencies, awkward syntax and poor word choice. Also ensures your project is consistent in messaging and tone, while maintaining integrity of voice and meaning. Also known as a proofedit. 3. Tone of Voice review - less a check on words themselves and more of a check that the project sounds like it is written by one person and not 40 SMEs. Also that it fits in with corporate tone and overall messaging. 4. Proofread - the final step in the editing process and is done before a written piece moves on to publication. 🎆 🎆 🎆 Calling all children's media creatives! 🎆 🎆 🎆 👇 A request for your recommendations... 👇 In 2018, I co-founded Book Pen Pals (with Sara O'Connor) after I tweeted an offer to send children's book recommendations via postcards to schools. The idea was to create a low-cost way of helping kids discover books they might not otherwise come across (and giving them contact with an author without having to invest in a school visit). The idea took off and led to a five-year programme which connected authors and illustrators with schools across the country. Although the programme is no longer operating due to the cost in money and time to run it on a larger scale, it's left me with a continued desire to help foster links between creatives and schools in easily managed, low-cost ways. On one of the panels at The Children's Media Conference, a talented animator (Lamide Olusegun) commented that when he was starting out it was hard it was to find knowledge about how to enter the industry. My idea is to create a document that pulls together the best links (from basic explanations, to grants and training opportunities) and then get it out to secondary schools across the country. From my own talks and creative workshops in schools, I know that teachers and students are rarely aware of everything that's available. If I ever have time and money enough, maybe this can turn into something more ambitious, but I hope that even a small contribution to spreading knowledge can make a difference. So if you know of a site or opportunity which would be relevant and helpful to young people aged between 16 and 18, I'd be very grateful if you could drop a link below. I have a document which lists the most obvious contenders (ScreenSkills etc.) but maybe your own company or individual website has something which would help young people navigate their first steps in film, television, animation, illustration, writing or publishing? Ideas can spark from anywhere eh. I was listening with interest to the latest episode of 'The Rest is Entertainment', a podcast about the media (I guess?) hosted by journalist and writer Marina Hyde and broadcaster/producer/professional tall man Richard Osman, where they discussed the new podcast 'Virtually Parkinson'. Yes, Michael Parkinson and his Yorkshire brogue are being recreated, to interview people - with full support from the Parkinson estate. It's a fascinating story which I won't fully explain here (do listen to the episode), but I did make note of the AI rules of engagement which the production company and the Parkinson estate agreed upon - could this be useful for learning and HR? 1) INFORMED CONSENT The family/estate/rights owner understands the real intention behind the usage. 2) LICENSED DATA Everything you use to train your LLM must have a rights holder that grants permission. 3) EQUAL REMUNERATION Whatever you would pay a human being, you pay the rights holder the same. 4) NO PASSING OFF No pretending it's real. Some interesting research from the Ada Lovelace Institute indicating that local authorities need clear and comprehensive guidance in procuring AI systems that work for the public good. It's not a big surprise, given that public authorities are still getting to grips with the possibilities and pitfalls for AI, and the market is developing so fast that nobody has a completely clear picture. But the institute has highlighted that, with many public leaders and politicians pressing the case for greater use of AI, local authorities need as clear a view as possible of the pros and cons of systems they procure. I've ghostwritten many opinion pieces that have been published in The Drum. It's a top-tier pub, a sought after placement for marketing and advertising thought leaders. I've also worked on plenty of pieces The Drum passed on. Wanna know what separates the winners from the losers? STRONG POV! John McCarthy spells it out clearly in slide four: "Actually HAVE an opinion on the topic." Sounds like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many thought leaders don't have an opinion, aren't comfortable sharing their opinion, or are looking to their comms team to tell them what their opinion is. None of that is thought leadership, btw, it's thought following. But that doesn't mean thought leaders always have fully-developed opinions. Usually, they don't! Developing an opinion and articulating it are parts of a larger storytelling process. Many (maybe most??) thought leaders work with ghostwriters, but the best thought leaders show up with ideas and that give their ghostwriters something to work with. Because while I can make something out of nothing, it's A LOT better if we collaborate to make something good into something great. Thank you for doing this, John McCarthy!
