The events and entertainment industry continually changes. We know that first hand. This article did surprise me on the extent of the entertainment venue closures. Over the past four years the UK has lost 37% of its clubs, which works out at about 10 clubs closing each month, according to research by the Nighttime Industries Association. Three interesting reads out this week focusing on festivals - how one started, the importance of smaller independent festivals and the challenges the sector is facing right now. "According to the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF), it is expected that the UK will see over 100 festivals disappear without intervention. The event’s over, but the work is far from done.... Guests have left, production has rolled out, and the site teams are clearing the last remnants of what was once a bustling, vibrant space. But for those of us in the live events industry, this is where the real grind continues. Final checks, post-event reports, site handovers, and making sure every last detail is wrapped up before heading into the next event—it’s a process that often goes unseen but is just as critical as the event itself. This image sums up the post-event blur—a mix of exhaustion, pride, and reflection. It’s the moment when the adrenaline fades, and you finally step back to process everything that happened. The long hours, the split-second decisions, the challenges, and the team effort that got you through it all. It’s not glamorous, and it’s rarely acknowledged, but it’s a reminder of the relentless commitment it takes to deliver something extraordinary. The work continues. The lessons are learned. Film & TV productions will often provide accommodation for cast and crew who have to live away from home while working on a job. The BAFTA/WeAreALBERT carbon calculator enables sustainability practitioners to easily calculate the carbon footprint of the accommodation used, whether it be self catering or hotels. Travel & Accommodation Co-Ordinators are key members of the production team who have a big role to play in ensuring that the accommodation options chosen will meet both the budgetary requirements of the production as well as the sustainability requirements. Co-Ordinators typically use a Sustainable Accommodation Policy to help inform the conversations with providers around these issues. The top item on the policy relates to whether the accommodation provider uses 100% renewable electicity in their premises. Using 100% renewable electricity is not only important for the planet, but it also scores extra points on the BAFTA/albert certification process. I'm delighted to learn from my colleague Rachel Munro that Clayton Hotels are now using 100% renewable electricity in all their hotels. Clayton Hotels have also adopted a Zero Waste policy and have been diverting 100% of their waste from landfill since 2022. This is great news, and something we will share with our colleagues in the Screen Guilds Sustainability Guild and Production Guild to get the word out so we can keep the momentum going on emissions reduction on Irish productions.

We are in an interesting time in the Live Events & Entertainment Sectors. Post-Covid more people and businesses are realising the irreplaceable value of the live experience, which is contributing to the sector remaining as one of the top growth industries in the UK despite a myriad of challenges. One of the major challenges is the dwindling pipeline of skilled and experienced workers, particularly in event production. More and more young people are turning away from the increasingly debt-laden pathways that have dominated recent narratives about the best way to get into the best jobs. Business leaders are also citing lack of real-world experience as a contributing factor to expectations mis-match between employers and recruits, and the attendant frustrations for all parties. Apprenticeships and other on-the-job training options need to be embraced as not only a viable alternative, but in some cases by far and away the ‘best option’ for creating and developing the workforce that companies need in a highly competitive jobs market. They open up doors to a far greater, passionate and diverse workforce. We need to think of it as investing in the health of our businesses. Not optional, but essential.
