Green business owners - do you know the best way to get your audience to engage with the sustainable, ethical work that you're doing? Nope, it's not giving them tonnes of information about it. And it's not about educating them on what they can do to help 'save the planet'. Too much focus on transferring information, and raising awareness about any cause will lead to overwhelm, anxiety, and emotional shut down - the outcome? Paralysis. Head in the sand. Can't make a significant impact, so why bother doing anything at all. Instead, you should be using action to prompt your audience to develop agency - taking individual responsibility for climate change and taking small, achievable steps that can be maintained and expanded on - because positivity creates a ripple effect. When it comes from us, we're more likely to stay motivated, take the tiny wins, and spread our enthusiasm to others - I'm in this process myself, and small actions do snowball into more significant ones. What's the best way to harness the action your business is taking? Through storytelling. That vital human connection that binds us together and tugs on our heartstrings. Remember the messaging that spread like wildfire during Covid? Why did we stick to it? Not because the government told us to, but because we read the stories of how real human beings were being affected, people waving a last goodbye though nursing home windows, and we took it upon ourselves to stop the spread of the virus. Show your audience, don't tell them. How? The other day, I had the opportunity to sit down and chat with one of my favourite people in the world, Sarah McDowell , about a topic I love. Self-paced learning! I’ve never been the kind of person who learns well in structured settings. My GCSE results day was painful—it looked like somebody’s keyboard was stuck on the letter D. I like learning at my own pace and going down as many rabbit holes as possible. Formal structured learning just wasn’t for me. I left school 13 years ago, and I have never stopped trying to learn new things. It wasn’t until recent years that I began to understand my learning style and what worked best for me. Self-paced learning meant I could learn at my own pace, anytime and anywhere. I didn’t need to sign up for courses or have someone talk to me. I could watch videos online, play them at double speed, with subtitles, and then test things out. I didn’t have the anxiety of having deadlines and trying to keep up with others; I’m able to revisit things as much as I need. I’m saying that self-guided and self-paced learning is the most effective method for most people.  In the latest episode of The SEO Mindset Podcast (link in comments), we explore how you or your team can make the most of self-paced learning and measure success. As I was writing Lea 🌈 Turner's newsletter yesterday, I thought: 💭 'I bet people skim over this list of all the masterclasses - how can I stop that?' So I snuck a few extras in to see if people noticed (can you spot them? 👀) Lots of people were also confused/surprised/flattered to see I'd apparently name dropped them to thousands of people... ... so let me clear something up 😂 In email marketing, we use something called 'Personalisation tags'. They're small pieces of code that change to information we have about you in our system. For example: "Hello %FIRSTNAME%" I'd see this as -> "Hello Alex" We can use these personalisation tags wherever we like (they're not limited to your name). For example, we can drop in your: - Name - Email address - Products you've bought - Address ... anything we like. Personalisation in emails really help with sales (when you use them naturally) and they also open up the doors for daft stuff like this 😂 ---- Want me and my team to write emails like this to sell your stuff? What have dogs got to do with Stress Awareness Month? 🐶 According to this mental health writer two years ago, quite a lot! I wrote the following blog post back in February 2022, when my darling Peggy Mitchell was 14 weeks old (she’s cute, right?). And it was actually written in relation to Boost Your Self Esteem month, but I think the sentiment still stands this April, which is... Stress Awareness Month 2024! 🎉 See, the human brain is a complex thing, but I think we can raise our own self esteem - and lower stress - with some simple behaviour training. We can do this by holding a mirror up to ourselves as we try to train our pets (and kids… and husbands, ha ha).
