Today, Defense Beacon Consultancy unveils Spain’s modest but important step in developing its own swarming capability for unmanned drones. This program places Spain alongside global leaders in advancing autonomous systems for multi-mission defense operations. While still in its early stages, this initiative is a significant move towards enhancing Spain’s operational effectiveness and future battlefield readiness. Managed by INTA (National Institute of Aerospace Technology) a Public Research Organization that depends on the Spanish Ministry of Defence (Ministerio de Defensa Español), the program involves a €400,000 contract awarded to SWARMING TS Technologies & Solutions SL for the development of a distributed and collaborative drone swarm system and spans from September 17, 2024, to March 31, 2025. It involves the supply of a drone swarm system consisting of 4 UAVs, including 3 multicopters and 1 fixed-wing VTOL platform, along with a mobile ground control station. The system will enable autonomous, distributed, non-hierarchical decision-making with high tactical resilience. It can handle multi-mission assignments and self-reconfiguration of the swarm. The drones will be able to operate in cooperative and intelligent task assignment, with communications managed via a MANET mesh network. The contract also includes demonstration, training, and after-sales technical support. Future capabilities will involve interoperability across air, land, and sea platforms, support for manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) and autonomous mission planning. Defense beacon experts believe that SWARMING TS Technologies & Solutions SL will be based on their Tizona VTOL and the Minerva multi-domain swarm system developed by the company. It is a distributed logic swarm, where all mission decisions and analysis using artificial intelligence techniques of the payloads are made on board the aircraft in a distributed manner. Tracking quality monitoring based on information geometry and geodesic shooting by Thales https://lnkd.in/ejg38G7a Abstract: This paper explores a new way of monitoring tracking quality based on information geometry methods. Previous methods were not fully satisfying when facing certain maneuvers when both the bias and the variance vary at the same time. The method we propose takes into account all parameters of the movement of the target thanks to the use of an appropriate distance which reflects the mean and the covariance of the distribution we obtain with the Kalman filter. To achieve that, we develop the distance in the manifold of multivariate Gaussians, compute the Fisher-Rao distance, and compare it with bounds.

Gaussian Distributions on the Space of Symmetric Positive Definite Matrices from Souriau’s Gibbs State for Siegel Domains by Coadjoint Orbit and Moment Map Frédéric Barbaresco https://lnkd.in/eUAz3RA7 Abstract We will introduce Gaussian distribution on the space of Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) matrices, through Souriau’s covariant Gibbs density by considering this space as the pure imaginary axis of the homogeneous Siegel upper half space where Sp (2n,R)/U(n) acts transitively. Gauss density of SPD matrices is computed through Souriau’s moment map and coadjoint orbits. We will illustrate the model first for Poincaré unit disk, then Siegel unit disk and finally upper half space. For this example, we deduce Gauss density for SPD matrices.

On 25th June 2024, Project BLUEPRINT showcased at Cranfield University Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre (DARTeC), laying out a "blueprint" for integrated BVLOS operations, as described in this excellent article by Philip Hicks published in Unmanned Airspace, and laid out in our case study[SL1] , which highlights our contribution to the project through the development of a holistic "two levels down" safety assessment to influence the Blueprint requirements. Ebeni's next steps, capitalising on the proposed Regulatory blueprint for BVLOS operations that we developed during this project, will be to work with industry to develop safety arguments and evidence structures to influence both regulatory and standards guidance. The Cluster’s Uncrewed Systems (UAV/C-UAV/RPAS/UAS/UXS) – Supporting the Defence Drone Strategy Event on 3 July aims to identify how regional innovation can support the implementation of the UK Ministry of Defence Drone Strategy. This Strategy, launched by Minister Defence Procurement in February 2024, identifies a “new way of war” represented by the war in Ukraine, and states: There is no clearer example than the development and employment of uncrewed systems, where low-cost solutions are increasingly defeating more exquisite capabilities and delivering disproportionate impact on the battlefield. The UK must learn from the Ukrainian experience, amongst other lessons, to position ourselves as a world leader in uncrewed systems. This will require changes in our processes, culture and relationship with industry. We will need to foster a culture of delivery-focused innovation across Defence, able to rapidly pull research & development (R&D) breakthroughs into the frontline. This network will provide comprehensive protection for #Turkiye’s airspace against enemy aircraft, helicopters, missiles, and drones. #ComparisonwithIronDome: As per the data availavle online the Steel Dome is described as “more comprehensive” than Israel’s Iron Dome, which can only counter air targets within a range of up to 70 km #DefenseLayers: The system will feature at least four layers of defense: Very Short-Range- Includes systems like Korkut (self-propelled air defense gun with a range of 4 km) and Gokberk (mobile air defense radar), along with Sahin, Goker, Ihtar, and Sungur. Short-Range: Covers ranges from 5 km to 10 km with systems such as Herikks, C-Ram, #HisarA+, Gokdemir, and Gurz. Medium-Range: Integrates the Hisar O+ system and #Kalkan1 and #Kalkan2 air defenses, with an interception range of about 24 km. The conjunction assessment algorithms used should all be open source and run at the edge. Data that is used for individual conjunctions (ephemeris, state vectors, element sets, etc.) must be shared, allowing all participants to do as many iterations as required for their own analysis, whether that is maneuver planning, launch COLA, etc. If there is a cost associated with the data source, the cost must be borne by the regulatory agencies charged with traffic management. If the cost is infeasible, the data too infrequently used, or the data is not openly available, the system must use homomorphic encryption (like the Paillier ecosystem of algorithms) to protect proprietary or classified data sources while still enabling conjunction assessment calculations.

I recently heard a brilliant description of the two approaches to achieving BVLOS approval: an arm-wrestle with the regulator, or technology. At Volant we have always pursued technology aligned with regulation as the only route to long-term success. ALIAS was an excellent demonstration of this, a highly advanced technological solution that achieved regulatory approval. We are not an operator and do not want to own the whole stack, so we're not conflicted and can supply this technology to anyone in the ecosystem. This is vital because it is only through scaling the whole ecosystem that we can achieve economies of scale and deliver on the potential of drones and AAM.
