Crime data is complicated. To really assess the who, what, where, when, and why of crime, we need to look at different datasets, collected with different methods & at different times. As part of our work implementing data-driven reforms to lower jail populations, we need to answer all these questions. Instead of waiting for the annual FBI crime data, we've been working with local #SafetyandJusticeChallenge communities to collect crime and jail data measure the impact of reforms. Rise of the machines...🕹️ ....to allow you the choice of whether your health data will be used for research. ‘Data stewardship for your research project’ is the heading of a MIDATA webpage (https://buff.ly/3Y2xPSF) depicting a technical data intermediary approach to research which allows people to choose whether they want their data to be used for research purposes. They are a provider of what they call “citizen-centered and patient-centered health data aggregation”. The EC published the long awaited European Digital Identity draft Implementing acts for public consultation on 12th August. The proposed acts cover requirements for; certification of the wallet; protocols and interfaces to be supported; integrity and core functionalities to be supported; the trust framework; person identification attributes and electronic attestation of attributes. The publication of the draft acts for consultation keeps the EDIW on track for the expected implementation timelines set out in the legislation - with member states to meet their obligations c.a Q4 2026 and relying parties Q4 2027. ICO responds to the Data (Use & Access) Bill On 31 October 2024, the ICO released a response to the new Data (Use & Access) Bill. The ICO has welcomed the bill as "a positive package of reforms" also stating that it "maintains high standards of data protection and protects people’s rights and freedoms, whilst also providing greater regulatory certainty for organisations and promoting growth and innovation in the UK economy." The ICO has welcomed proposed reforms to the ICO itself, considering they allow the ICO to maintain its independence, which was an issue with the previous bill. The ICO has proposed some technical amendments to the bill (which can be found in the annex) which it describes as necessary for clarity and to amend drafting which does not appear to reflect the intended policy. Make sure you provide your opinion on risk thresholds for advanced AI systems. We need everybody to weigh in. Deadline is September 10th. To me, compute threshold are not a useful metric for identifying safety risks. AI safety is a context-dependent evaluation of multiple factors, not a distinct property of a model. Also, passing a compute threshold does not necessarily indicate the presence of dangerous capabilities. In fact, it may well be that more compute will help in achieving higher levels of safety. Also, recently greater levels of performance are being achieved with smaller and smaller models. Rather than setting thresholds (based on compute or other), the evaluation of capabilities and, even more importantly, limitations of AI systems is a much better indication of issues that can turn in possible risks when the model will be used. Work on evaluation is ongoing in both academia and corporate environments, and there is still not a single unique way to do it. However, the danger in running a certain risk is very related to the deployment and use scenario. Even model with powerful capabilities or serious limitations can be safe to use in certain scenarios but dangerous in others. What is your opinion? Let's talk about AI in Policing AI presents ethical dilemmas for policing but not barriers to adoption. We  recognise the emergence and value of ethical and scrutiny arrangements for  AI in policing including for example, The Independent Digital Ethics Panel for  Policing and the government’s Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation. Indeed, the extent to which artificial intelligences ( AIs ) can influence policing  is a topic which is seeing greater momentum and debate, including the  surrounding ethical issues. However, perhaps it is fair to say that AI is a term  which is now commonly used but less understood by the policing community.  Arguably, a strong partnership is needed between policing and the technology  industry to understand how AI can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of  policing. Some more details on the Italian Wallet as a precursor to the issuance of the European Digital Identity Wallet legally required to happen before the end of 2026. As one may see there are two steps one to be completed by the end of the year providing a limited but useful functionality and a much broader offering scheduled for 2025. #EU #GDPR and #EUDR ... does anyone know what the data protection is going to be for that generated by the EUDR from producing countries? Would the protection under the GDPR also apply to it? It would be interesting to know how data protection is going to be handled within the EUDR and would love to know if anyone has material on the matter. 🙏 and #mladdiz

A project using #AI in #law #enforcement is among those to have won shares of a new round of funding from UK Research and Innovation under its #Responsible AI UK programme - one of a number of initiatives receiving shares of £12m to address the challenges of rapid advances in AI. The PROBabLE Futures project has received nearly £3.5m to support its work on the uncertainties of using AI in law enforcement. Its lead, Prof. Marion Oswald, MBE from Northumbria University, said that AI can help #police and #courts tackle an overload of digital data and unknown risks and increase efficiencies: “The key problem is that AI tools take inputs from one part of the law enforcement system but their outputs have real world, possibly life changing, effects in another part – a miscarriage of justice is only a matter of time...
