    Charity Week

    - 1 year 1 month

    Children

I took part in Charity Week 2014 and 2015, where I raised money in tube stations for orphans and needy children, which was a very valuable lesson in teamwork.

I was also the Publicity Officer for Charity Week 2015, where I created two trailers using professional video-editing software, then uploaded them to YouTube to promote the campaign.

I also raised over £250 on a sponsored climb of Mount Snowdon.

  • The materials and surface chemistry of thermal protection systems for atmospheric entry

Literature review analysing the different types of thermal protection systems (TPS) available for aircraft that will undergo atmospheric re-entry; specifically the materials used and both how and why they are able to protect the aircraft from the intense heat generated upon re-entry.

  • Case study: Boots Essentials Slim Brush

Case study on taking apart and analysing the different materials present in a slim brush, including a final report and a presentation of our findings.

Extended lab session where I worked in a group of four to synthesise gold nanoparticle solutions of different sizes, then test how the size and immersion time affected how well the gold nanoparticles adsorbed onto a glass slide.

Five sizes of gold nanoparticles were synthesised, then five glass slides were dipped into suspensions of each size for five different amounts of time; half an hour, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours and 4 hours. The solutions were analysed using UV-Vis spectroscopy before dipping to calculate the size of the nanoparticles, and after being dipped into the solutions the glass slides were then tested using ICP in order to calculate the surface coverage of gold nanoparticles on each glass slide. This allowed the analysis of how two variables affected the adsorption of gold nanoparticles onto glass, the size of the gold nanoparticles and the length of time the glass slides were immersed in the solutions. The surface coverages calculated ranged from 0.747% to 11.6%. It was found that the smaller the gold nanoparticles were the better they adsorbed onto the glass surface, and that the longer the immersion time the more gold nanoparticles adsorbed onto the surface. However, this effect was much more pronounced for smaller particles, while for larger particles the effect of time on surface coverage was almost negligible.

Final year research project, supervised by Professor David Dye and sponsored by Rolls-Royce plc.

Seven alloy samples of varying carbon and boron content were melted, hot rolled and tested using various methods to determine how the addition of carbon and boron affect various properties such as the strength, ductility, microstructure and oxidation resistance at both room temperature and elevated temperatures.
