Why Every Product Manager Should Use Their Product More Than Their Customers Do Happy new month to all the incredible Product Managers out there! As we kick off a new month, I want to share an insight that has shaped my approach to product management. Often, we PMs get caught up in the cycle of building and launching new features, moving swiftly from one project to the next. In this rush, we sometimes forget to use the very product we’re creating. I’ve been guilty of this myself, what my team lead humorously calls “shooting and forgetting 😀 .” But over time, I realized that actively using our product, immersing ourselves in the customer's seat provides invaluable insights. Here’s why I think it’s crucial to use your product more than your customers and how this practice can elevate your role. 1. Gain Firsthand Product Experience: Using your product more than your customers allows you to directly experience its strengths and weaknesses. You’ll uncover hidden pain points and unexpected delights that might not surface in customer feedback. This firsthand experience helps you understand the product inside out, making you better equipped to improve it and ensure every feature truly adds value. 2. Stay Connected with Product Evolution: By continually using your product, including older features, you stay connected with its evolution. This helps you identify opportunities for optimization and integration, ensuring the product remains cohesive and relevant. 3. Anticipate Customer Needs Proactively: Being a frequent user of your product allows you to anticipate customer needs and questions before they arise. You start thinking like your customers, identifying potential confusion points, and addressing them proactively. 4. Improve Cross-Functional Collaboration: Using your product extensively not only benefits you but also enhances collaboration with engineering, design, and support teams. When you understand the product from both technical and user perspectives, you can more effectively communicate necessary improvements and advocate for the customer experience. Utilize Your Tools:The name of Jesus holds unbeatable power. As a product manager, leveraging the right tools and resources can help you overcome any obstacle. 5. Confidence in Decisions:Faith in the blood of Jesus helps overcome challenges. Confidence in your strategic decisions will similarly guide you through tough times. 6. Foster Generosity:Just as giving unlocks blessings, fostering a culture of support and generosity within your team can lead to greater overall success. 8. New Product Manager on the Block? This is for you! Landing a new product manager role is exciting, especially for a transitioning PM, but feeling overwhelmed in those first few months is natural. Here are some hacks I gleaned from experience and industry leaders to help you crush it; Sharpen Your Product Acumen: 1. Before your first day, immerse yourself in the company's product and market. Read user reviews, competitor analyses, and internal documentation if you have access. This builds context and shows initiative. 2. Schedule coffee chats with customer success reps and support teams. Understanding customer pain points directly will fuel your product vision. Become a Collaboration Magnet: 1. Product managers don't work in silos. Proactively meet with key stakeholders (engineering, design, marketing) to understand their priorities and build trust. 2. Gather input on the existing product roadmap. This transparency fosters collaboration and helps you identify gaps you can address. Be a Prioritization Powerhouse: 1. Use a prioritization framework like the Eisenhower Matrix to categorize tasks based on urgency and importance. Focus on high-impact activities that move the needle. 2. Leverage user data and analytics to inform your decisions. Don't be afraid to experiment and iterate based on what you learn. In the first quarter of the year, the Central Bank of Nigeria issued a remodel of the KYC process and general regulatory framework for FinTechs in the country. It was a tough adjustment, especially for product teams in the FinTech space. They had to restructure the onboarding flow of their products, introducing extra layers of verification (face verification, address verification, ID updates, etc.) and make drastic product decisions that affected major product metrics (churn rate, retention rate, MAU, DAU, etc.). Not to mention dealing with disgruntled users. In all this, it is important to note that there are several factors to consider when building a product. Besides providing solutions and building a beautiful product, meeting regulatory standards is more critical than ever. As product managers, working with compliance and legal units is vital. One way to achieve this is to involve the compliance and legal teams early in the process of your product development. Doing this will help identify regulatory problems on time that wouldn't pose a threat to your product in the future. As of March 2024, 15-year-old Paga Group Ltd, a Nigerian payment company, had processed 335M transactions since inception, worth over ₦14T ($32B) via its PoS offering, with 80% coming in the last 5 years. The company is now refocusing on its mobile app for bill payments, airtime purchases, and money transfers. Speaking about the state of the consumer fintech app market and Paga’s approach to differentiating itself, Paga founder and CEO Tayo Oviosu said: “This is not a winner-take-all market.
