The events and entertainment industry continually changes. We know that first hand. This article did surprise me on the extent of the entertainment venue closures. Over the past four years the UK has lost 37% of its clubs, which works out at about 10 clubs closing each month, according to research by the Nighttime Industries Association. The event’s over, but the work is far from done.... Guests have left, production has rolled out, and the site teams are clearing the last remnants of what was once a bustling, vibrant space. But for those of us in the live events industry, this is where the real grind continues. Final checks, post-event reports, site handovers, and making sure every last detail is wrapped up before heading into the next event—it’s a process that often goes unseen but is just as critical as the event itself. This image sums up the post-event blur—a mix of exhaustion, pride, and reflection. It’s the moment when the adrenaline fades, and you finally step back to process everything that happened. The long hours, the split-second decisions, the challenges, and the team effort that got you through it all. It’s not glamorous, and it’s rarely acknowledged, but it’s a reminder of the relentless commitment it takes to deliver something extraordinary. The work continues. The lessons are learned. Three interesting reads out this week focusing on festivals - how one started, the importance of smaller independent festivals and the challenges the sector is facing right now. "According to the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF), it is expected that the UK will see over 100 festivals disappear without intervention. Thought For Thursday – stability vs adaptability We proudly unveiled the new arm of ESMOS Recruitment this week – our Event Technology Division. Whilst we continue to support companies with their hiring needs across the full breadth of the Events Industry, we felt that #EventTech deserved its own specialised approach in recognition of the technical nature of the roles within this sub-sector. As the Head of this new department, I’m extremely excited to work with our existing event tech clients, and to form relationships with new ones, in the months ahead. As a business, it’s incredibly important to not just keep up with market patterns, but to also anticipate future trends and lead the way. Being a pioneer within your sector is what gives you a competitive edge. The ability to be agile and to adapt is invaluable - embracing new opportunities whilst exploring cutting edge tools is a prerequisite for success in today’s fast-moving society. Those who stubbornly state “We do it this way because we’ve always done it this way” will soon find themselves struggling to survive. However, something I wouldn’t advocate is change for change’s sake. If you’re considering pivoting your company in a new direction, there has to be a clear rationale behind it. For example, if you’re looking to build AI into your daily processes simply because it’s the latest cool thing to do, and it’s not going to actually bring any value to your business, you’re going to waste time and money, and risk confusing your customers, clients and employees. Yes, AI tools can be hugely beneficial, but only if they’re relevant to your specific business. Let me use a football analogy. I’m a Man Utd fan and enjoyed their dominance in my early adult life. Unfortunately, they’re now suffering from mediocrity because they didn’t incorporate strategies to maintain their success. Instead, they became complacent and assumed they’d continue to win simply because they’d done so in the past. Then along came Pep Guardiola. Pep’s innovative playing style and coaching techniques have completely changed the shape of the modern game. This, coupled with excellent player recruitment, has transformed rivals Man City into arguably the best team in the world. Such has been their success, that now every team is trying to copy them, with ball-playing defenders and possession-based football suddenly ever-present. But the problem with this is that most teams, Man Utd included, don’t have the personnel, coaching foundation or tactical acumen to master this style of play. They’re simply trying to implement something because it’s ‘cool’ rather than something that suits their own identity. The key is to strike a balance between stability and adaptability. Retain the core principles of your business whilst striving for growth in new areas and improving current processes. "UK Live Concerts Thrive While Independent Festivals & Events Struggle to Survive, Warns NTIA" NTIA comment on the new report from LIVE which highlights that spending on the UK live music sector and associated businesses has hit a record £6.1bn. "Surpassing £6bn in revenue for the first time is a significant achievement for the live music sector, demonstrating the immense economic impact and continued popularity of major concert performances like Taylor Swift's tour and the upcoming Oasis reunion," says Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association. "However, this success starkly contrasts with the severe challenges facing the independent events sector. Rising operational costs have led to the cancellation of 60 festivals this year alone, highlighting the precarious situation smaller festivals and events are in. While it's encouraging to see large-scale concerts thriving, we must address the widening gap to ensure the entire live music ecosystem remains vibrant and diverse. The loss of independent festivals, events and venues is a critical issue that threatens the cultural fabric of our industry, and we must take action to support and sustain these vital contributors to our nightlife economy."
