The UK accounts for 39% of the daily $7trillion of global FX transactions with NYC being second accounting for 19% of the transactions. Historically it was helpful when Asian FX traders handed over their FX positions to London who then traded and then handed over to USA who then in turn kept trading until they handed back to Asia. Digital currencies can trade 24/7 so the geography and time zone becomes less relevant.... Sarah Green at The Law Commission has done some great work clarifying the legal position around digital assets in English and Welsh law (used to conduct 80% of international trade). Given the $150+billion daily turnover of stablecoins we need banks to be able to offer cash backed stablecoins that generate interest and so unlock the benefits of automated payments and create a more inclusive financial markets. Another huge benificary of having digital payment options such as stablecoins is to help SMEs get paid faster, SMEs which employ 61% of all UK employes. Getting paid faster ought to help improve UK productivity and a faster circulation of money potentially results in more economic growth. This impressive performance was driven by robust user growth and increased interest-related income, with the company's revenue nearly doubling to £1.8 billion ($2.2 billion), far surpassing expectations. Revolut, founded in 2015, reported a significant financial upturn in its latest annual report. The fintech company's revenue surge and profitability come at a crucial time as it seeks to secure a more than $40 billion valuation in an upcoming $500 million share sale. This valuation would solidify Revolut's status as Europe's most valuable startup. The company has grown to serve 45 million customers globally, with customer numbers increasing by nearly 45% in the past year alone. Revolut is currently working closely with UK regulators to secure a UK banking license, which has been pending approval for three years. How is the UK ever going to win globally at technology? It looks like Graphcore, once the AI darling of the UK, is going to be consumed by Softbank https://lnkd.in/eTRZ8u3d Why? There was no UK procurement. This was needed 3 to 5 years ago. Even 2 years ago. Or 1 year ago. It didn’t happen. So Graphcore never had a chance to move along the experience curve.  The UK’s problem isn’t an investment issue. It’s a procurement issue. We also don't seem to care much about intellectual property. We have a prime minister (for a few more weeks) who wants open source and open data. He has overseen a government with no procurement of emerging technology despite Tory grandee Lord Hague saying he needs a central procurement buyer of first resort (with references to semiconductors!). We’ll see Softbank scoop up a bargain and the intellectual property that goes with it.  If we don’t have intellectual property, we will find it very difficult to become a technology superpower.

🚨 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵: HSBC-backed FinTech Monese, which has two million customers, is working on plans to split itself into two independent companies as it tries to break even, Sky News learns. The company which was in talks to raise funding at a valuation of over £1bn four years ago is to break itself up amid mounting losses. Sky News has learnt that Monese, which has targeted customers who are underserved by mainstream banks, is working with advisers on plans to split itself into separate consumer-facing and corporate businesses (XYB by Monese). Led by Norris Koppel, Monese is said to have been attempting to raise additional capital during the last year, and had come under pressure from investors to consider breaking itself up. Monese has about two million customers in more than 30 countries, and employs about 275 people. News that Graphcore will finally be acquired by Softbank has made the news, with a national security review as the final hurdle. I somewhat suspect this is also to delay the announcement until after the UK General Election. Despite the Conservative celebrations of the UK being World Leading at AI, we're literally selling away our best AI opportunities at knockdown prices because the UK government has not been able to procure emerging technology. Graphcore's main challenge has been over scaling and winning a first big customer in a very competitive market (i.e. traction). In terms of AI compute, this will be with the (mostly) US technology companies or Western governments. Selling to foreign corporates/governments will always be hard as a first big customer and an emerging company's products will always be slightly behind incumbents (such as NVIDIA). This is why a UK government buyer is somewhat of an important step, or "Buyer of First Resort" as per Hague/Blair. Where could Graphcore have been in 5, 10 or 20 years? Sadly, the Tories went missing on this one. Graphcore will be Japanese owned. We won't be exporting and most likely we'll be importing. These types of examples tend to not make the news but are very important drivers as to whether we will be a rich and sustainable economy in the future or continue to have wider deficits and higher taxes or be poorer as a nation. One hopes that The Labour Party will deliver a better Industrial Strategy from Friday. Robinhood introduce stocks lending in the UK #Robinhood is accelerating its UK expansion by introducing stock lending, allowing British customers to earn passive income by lending out their fully paid stocks. This new feature, announced by Robinhood UK President Jordan Sinclair, is available through the app, which also enables users to monitor their earnings, track positions, and manage their lending activity. Robinhood backs lent stocks with cash collateral at a third-party bank for added security. Since entering the UK market last November, Robinhood has been expanding its offerings to attract retail investors with features like commission-free trades, no FX fees, fractional shares, and 24/5 trading. The #fintech company also broadened its footprint by acquiring cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp for $200 million in June, marking Robinhood's first step into institutional business and offering services like institutional lending and staking. However, Robinhood faces regulatory challenges in the US, including a Wells notice from the SEC regarding its crypto trading arm. Despite this, the company remains committed to providing clarity and defending its stance that the crypto assets on its platform are not securities. CEO Vlad Tenev has emphasized Robinhood's efforts to respond robustly to the SEC's actions, highlighting the company's ongoing commitment to expanding access to financial services both in the UK and globally. *Bracing myself for the response I might get for asking this* Software Engineers: Would you ever consider working on an EQUITY ONLY basis (ie no salary, just owning a portion of the business, the value of which would increase as it progresses and scales)? Assuming: - The product is really interesting and so is the work - The product is in the "tech for good" space and would be a really positive contribution to parts of society - Seed funding is confirmed to be coming with several backers keen & they will able to offer a salary in the near future - The product is super early stage, you would be writing the software from the ground up, but the concept, design and business model once funding is received are all solid I know that there will be many who would never consider this under any circumstances and I totally get why, but just curious to hear if any of you would if it was for a product you believed in enough? And would you look at it on a full-time basis or a part-time basis? It's something I got asked about and so I thought I would throw it out to Linkedin to see what you all think rather than assuming that I know the answer on your behalf. #startup #founder #softwareengineer

The bank reduced the unit's value by £300 million. Now it faces new problems, including Global Payments Inc. buying takepayments Limited, a key partner, which might hurt its income. 🏦📉 Brookfield won't have to pay to buy the business, but it will need to spend a lot to improve products and update systems. Revolut to Launch Standalone Wealth Management App Revolut is spinning out its wealth management offering into a standalone app called Revolut Invest. The move will allow Revolut to attract users outside of its existing bank client base. Revolut counts 45 million users, has 3 million active traders, and 20,000 subscribers to its premium investment account. U.K.-based fintech Revolut unveiled today that it plans to spin out its wealth management offering into a standalone app. The new app, Revolut Invest, will feature capabilities from Revolut’s $9.5 billion (€8.5 billion) wealth management business, as well as additional functionality. At present, Revolut offers its users stock trading as well as a roboadvisor tool. The new app will offer much of the same features: access to 5,000 assets, including U.S. and European stocks, ETFs, commodities, and bonds. The app will also come with new products, such as contracts for difference (CFDs). Revolut Invest will offer the option to upgrade to Revolut’s premium subscription tier called Trading Pro that offers reduced commission fees, increased limits, and analytics. One of the key advantages for Revolut in making its investing services a standalone tool is the ability to attract customers beyond its current user base. New investors using Revolut Invest won’t need to be existing Revolut banking clients, allowing the company to more easily expand its 3 million active traders and its 20,000 Trading Pro subscribers. New Revolut Invest users will also be given the option to add Revolut’s banking services during the onboarding process. Conversely, Revolut’s banking clients will not need to download the new trading app, as they will still be able to conduct their investing activities within Revolut’s banking app. Revolut is currently piloting Revolut Invest in Greece, Denmark, and the Czech Republic. The company is aiming to double the number of investments available in the app in the next three months. To fuel this growth, Revolut is scheduled to launch the investment app in other European Economic Area countries by the end of the year and also revealed plans to launch it in the U.K., U.S., Singapore, and Australia, as it already has the licensing in place in these regions. With more than 45 million retail customers and 500,000 business customers, Revolut supports more than 25 currencies for users in more than 140 regions. The company offers current accounts, savings accounts, and debit cards that feature the ability to pay in multiple currencies. Revolut also has a credit card product in the U.S., Ireland, Lithuania, and Poland. Last month, Revolut’s valuation was billed at $45 billion, cementing its reputation as Europe’s most valuable fintech. Earlier this summer, the company earned its banking license from the U.K. Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), adding deposit insurance for its users in the region.
