The IFoA has joined forces with the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) to support actuaries in their understanding of ethical issues when deploying AI. Research published by the Financial Services Skills Commission in April listed machine learning and AI as a priority future skill for the UK financial services sector. As actuaries measure risk, AI could be a great help within their role. However, it is important to use AI in a way that is ethical and secure. It's estimated that due to this programme, almost 300,000 global financial services practitioners can now boost their skills in AI ethics and transparency. The CMI Self-Administered Pension Scheme Committee has released Working Paper 190, “Mortality experience of pensioners for the period 2015-2022”. The working paper presents an analysis of the mortality experience of data covering the period 2015 to 2022. It is the latest in a series of such papers that are updated annually. This is the first paper to be prepared following the publication of the “S4” Series of mortality tables. The latest PPF 7800 showed funding of defined benefit schemes improved during April, with surpluses increasing for another month running and rising to £458.3bn. Why do we believe the actuarial industry is ripe for ‘amplification’? 💪 “Actuaries have spent the better part of two decades solving gnarly regulatory challenges. This monopolised our time; putting paid to other focuses such as platform modernisation. We worked with what we had because we didn’t have enough time to question what ‘could be’,” says our Co-Founder and Co-CEO Klaas Stijnen. Fast forward to today, and teams find themselves with newfound capacity to focus on productivity and the ‘amplification’ of their skills. Innovative actuaries are asking questions; and we're working hard to amplify their superpowers through technology and AI tooling. The era of disruption isn’t coming, it's here. “We’re excited to see where we go and what actuaries will be capable of now that they have the mandate to innovate,” says Klaas.

New DB funding code in force today The Pensions Regulator’s (TPR) new funding code for defined benefit (DB) schemes, which provides guidance and sets expectations for meeting funding and investment strategy (FIS) requirements, takes effect today. This code applies to DB schemes with actuarial valuations from 22 September 2024 onward. We have today published Working Paper 192, which includes the anonymised results of the CMI Model 2024 benchmarking survey.  The survey asked insurer and reinsurer Subscribers about their use of the CMI Model and we were pleased to receive responses from 22 Subscribers, including 16 insurers and 6 reinsurers. Key results of the survey include: -> CMI_2022 was the most commonly used Model version at 31 December 2023 and CMI_2021 was the most commonly used Model version at 31 December 2022. -> Of those respondents who indicated a likely Model version for use at 31 December 2024, over half indicated CMI_2023, with around a quarter intending to use CMI_2022 and no respondents expecting to use CMI_2020 or earlier versions. -> We asked respondents to provide an indication of their best estimate view of the specific impact of the pandemic on the trend component of life expectancy. The liability-weighted average impact was a 1.8% fall in life expectancy. -> The paper also contains information on parameters used, life expectancies, and differences between insurers and reinsurers and between longevity and mortality protection books of business.
