UK’s first LNG ferry delivered Glen Sannox, the first of two dual fuel ferries being built by Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow) Limited, has been handed over to Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) Glen Sannox has been delivered by Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow) shipyard to its owner CMAL. Launched into the Clyde in November 2017, it is the first vessel in the UK to have a dual-fuel propulsion system which can use both conventional marine gas oil or LNG. CMAL chief executive Kevin Hobbs said, "I’m sure many people will join us in celebrating this milestone today. It has been a long time coming, but we have now taken ownership of Glen Sannox, and are just weeks away from it entering service. This is the first of six major vessels being replaced in our fleet, with the other five well underway. We are working hard to rejuvenate the Scottish ferry fleet and infrastructure, on behalf of communities across Scotland." CalMac Ferries Limited interim chief executive Duncan Mackison said, "Its arrival will benefit communities across the whole west coast ferry network, as new tonnage gives us more flexibility in how we deploy vessels. Our crew are excited to sail it and will now get to work to complete operational trials and familiarisation work in the next few weeks before it enters service for Arran." Ferguson Marine (Port Glasgow) interim chief executive John Petticrew said, “Today is a day to look forward. Glen Sannox is a fine vessel, well capable of providing decades of service for islanders and visitors. However, there is no doubt it’s been a long haul getting to this point, and we sympathise with ferry users who have waited so long to see this day. Looking to the future, our ability to adapt, learn from, and successfully overcome considerable challenges demonstrates the resilience and skills of our workforce, and will provide huge value as we tender for future contracts.” Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said, “This is an important milestone for Ferguson Marine as it delivers the first LNG dual-fuel ferry to be built in the UK. Glen Sannox will provide resilience to the fleet delivering vital lifeline services to islanders and I am encouraged the Scottish government’s wider programme to procure six new ferries by 2026 has taken another major step forward.” Glen Sannox is capable of carrying up to 878 tonnes with a draught of 3.5 m. It has capacity for 852 passengers, 127 cars and 16 HGVs. It deploys two Wärtsilä dual-fuel main engines and two auxiliary engines, running generators. All have six cylinders. The bridge features port and starboard wing control units offering complete control of the ship while manoeuvring into harbour. A glass floor panel allows the officers to see how close they are to the quay. The LNG is stored at -160-170°C in a tank in the belly of the ship, and moved around in cryogenic pipes.

The contract for CalMac to run ferries on Scotland's west coast has been extended by a year. It comes as ministers are considering a direct award to the Scottish government-owned operator without a competitive tendering process. A direct award is Transport Scotland's preferred option, rather than accepting bids from rival firms. The contract had been due to expire on 30 September, but it said an extra year would allow further "due diligence" work to take place. The move comes after a long period of problems on the CalMac network. The firm has struggled to maintain services with an ageing and increasingly unreliable fleet which it leases from another government-owned agency CMAL. There have been delays to repairs to the main Arran ferry, cancellation of services to South Uist and islanders on Mull have also faced frequent disruption. Leading ports across Scotland have today launched the Scottish Offshore Wind Ports Alliance (SOWPA), a strategic alliance and progressive forum created to optimise the opportunities from offshore wind. The alliance will optimise large-scale operations, enhance regional competitiveness and address common & complex industry challenges through knowledge sharing and collaboration. Iain Sinclair, SOWPA’s Chair, said: “It is widely recognised that ports have a critical enabling role in the industrialisation and deployment of offshore wind in the UK. Today’s announcement demonstrates that ports are motivated to take the initiative, work proactively and diligently together, and align with the whole offshore wind ecosystem, to maximise the localisation of the supply chain requirements. “SOWPA’s collective capability, knowledge and expertise is a world-leading value proposition. Dual fuel was the innovation, as adopted by ferry operators in Northern Europe, particularly Norway at that time. Marine diesel and LNG. Still not in service. Seems like it would have ticked all the boxes at the time, with  the Scottish Government's Ferries Plan, published in December 2012. Oil and gas was put forward as a key factor in the economy of an Independent Scotland. Fast forward to 2024 and domestic oil and gas production looks to be consigned to the garbage bib, c/o UK Government. Assuming these ferries will have an operating life of 20 + years, we will be importing LNG to run them!! Time to rip out the diesel / LNG drives and install batteries? Was in Oslo in June and silent electric ferries ply the route around the harbour and adjacent islands. So time to follow Norway's example again?

Cyprus field development! Chevron and partners Shell and NewMed Energy have submitted an updated field development plan for the 3.5 Tcf Aphrodite gas discovery, offshore Cyprus. This follows a request earlier in the week from the Cypriot Energy Minister for the partners to progress with the project. The updated development plan proposes a floating production unit with an 800 MMcf/d capacity, 4 subsea production wells, and a pipeline to Egypt at an estimated cost of US$4 billion. This should be enough to end a stand-off between the partners and the Cyprus government over the development plan, which has been going on for over a year. Aphrodite was discovered by Noble Energy in 2011. It will be the first gas development offshore Cyprus and will provide the country with significant revenues through gas exports.

Sustainable Decommissioning at the Port of Ashburton In 2021, Base Marine proudly partnered with Eni and McDermott International, Ltd to bring two substantial 250-tonne segments from a detachable single-point mooring buoy in the Woolybutt field back to shore. These structures, after serving offshore for over 30 years, were carefully managed with one goal in mind: environmentally responsible disposal and recycling. Each segment was safely transported using a Base-supplied 13-line trailer to our secure laydown area, where they were expertly placed on engineered stands. From there, we engaged C.D. Dodd to handle the steel’s scrapping and recycling. Thanks to our stringent decommissioning and waste management plans, all materials will be recycled, bringing these structures full circle in an environmentally friendly manner. This successful collaboration not only highlights Base’s role as the most experienced landside decommissioning partner in the Onslow region but also reinforces our dedication to sustainability, safety, and strategic partnerships in decommissioning.
