As part of the ETS plc expert video series, I was asked to reflect on what I felt was the biggest challenge facing leaders right now. As I set out, I do still feel (and hear) that it is about how organisations can find their way to align important but potentially competing people and performance priorities. In many organisations purpose statements are something written on a poster that no one can remember. However we know from extensive research that a strong sense of purpose that everyone knows, believes and feels is one of 7 vital ingredients in creating high performing and thriving environments. My amazing colleague Lidia Ranieri is incredibly passionate and learned in this field and she has penned the following article that links leaders' purpose with their organisation's. Today's video considers why coaching is important. In my book, coaching matters as much as having an accountant, Financial Director or HR person. Yes, these other roles might be important in an immediate, pragmatic, and cash flow sense, but the overall leadership direction of the organisation needs maintenance and development, too. Its neglect leads to short-termism and people with the title of leader without the zen of it.
