The relationship between energy and capital: insights from The Wealth of Nations—New #OpenAccess paper by Simon Mair → https://lnkd.in/eAxyFKia ℹ️ To deliver low-carbon transitions, we must understand the dynamics of capital. To this end, Simon Mair develops a theory of energy-capital relations by reading Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations from an energy-analysis perspective. He argues that, for Smith, capital is any resource used to support production with the intention of generating profits through market exchange. Because it is profit driven, capital does not save energy, it redirects it to new uses. We are seeing growing interest from clients in investments aligned to the low-carbon transition. But there is not always a sufficient pipeline of commercially viable low-carbon projects across most sectors of the UK economy to meet demand. To address this issue, clear and long-term public policy measures will be essential. This is why we put together this Policy Roadmap. Authored by my colleagues Nick Molho and Sophie English, and featuring input from our investment desks and a range of external experts, this ambitious report aims to help policymakers identify measures that could help unlock private capital at the pace and scale necessary to achieve the UK’s net-zero target, while creating attractive new potential investment opportunities into the bargain. It outlines suggested policy interventions over the next five years across eight key sectors: power, buildings, heavy industry, surface transport, aviation, shipping, nature restoration and engineered carbon removals. "Here is the voluntary carbon credit market 2.0" 🌎 📊 I was really pleased to hear the Global Chair of The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) Annette Nazareth speak - and ask her questions on a topic close to my heart. Post 1 of 2: as this is a shout out to my top speakers at the Carbon and Energy Professionals New Zealand conference in Ōtautahi Christchurch. CARBON CREDIT MARKET GLOBALLY 🌐 - "This is the voluntary carbon credit market 2.0" ⛰ - 1.0 is broken ⚡ - The new ICVCM standard has raised the bar on carbon credit projects globally 🔝 - "No projects have yet been certified under this new standard" ...! (good to know) 🔜 - The big players have had their programmes approved e.g. Verra, GoldStandard ⚜ - Evidencing 'Additionality' and 'Permanence' of a project are still the focus points/ hot topics - Impact to indigenous people and local communities are included in the standard - "Continuous improvement" of the standard is built-in. There will be a 3.0 at some point too! ICVCM has released the standard which, going forward, carbon credit projects globally should be certified against. The goal is to mobilise the private sector to fund climate action of high integrity projects. And last but not least - in fact most importantly - gross emission reductions is the first priority.

I read today's article in the The Guardian (see link in comments below) with interest. The dawning realisation and indeed policy endorsement to promoting the continued usage of #naturalgas in the #UK's power system, demonstrates a level of common sense from the incoming #Labour administration - though let's not pick bones about the fact that the previous administration's decision to extend usage of #CCGTs met with widespread criticism from across the chamber at the time.  The idea that greater penetration of renewables in the system requires greater #flexiblepower provided by natural gas #powergeneration, is clear - at least until and unless it is displaced by #nuclear, or indeed #longdurationstorage, which can recycle green #electrons. The jury's currently out on the latter from a commercialisation perspective, and new nuclear build is years ahead. So natural gas continues to be the #decarbonised transition fuel of choice. But here's the kicker, with #carboncapture #technology attached to gas generators, we can deliver #netzero flexible power into the #grid. And why only #sequester the #CO2? Why not create a further revenue opportunity by scrubbing or reusing the CO2 in products such as food grade #industrialgases or #carbonblack products, or indeed #methanol? In doing so, a real opportunity exists to invest without the dependence on #subsidy. At Victory Hill Capital Partners LLP, our thematic approach to investing in the #energytransition foresaw such an #evolution, hence our investment in a UK programme which provides #gasfired flexible power combined with carbon capture technology which scrubs the CO2 into #foodgrade CO2 to be sold into the industrial gases market where there is a structural short in the UK, creating a #sustainable value chain, with our partners, Landmark Power Holdings. Moving forward, we believe the picture of the #demandsidedynamics are likely to be further skewed by the emergence of generational #AI technology in #datacentres. With the amount of energy required for AI technology tasks being 10x more than the equivalent Google tasks, the demand for dependable energy is expected to spike to historically higher levels in the next 10 years in #Europe, the #US and beyond. And within this context, the conversation will likely be, is natural gas a #transitionfuel? Or will it be here to stay? In which case the question arises of: who understood ahead of time the benefits of carbon capture technology, and is there sufficient policy initiatives and #privatecapital to support this? Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) issues Call to Action   Today IIGCC has issued a ‘Call to Action’ urging the UK government to adopt a ‘whole of government’ approach to reducing emissions across all sectors of the economy. Setting clear decarbonisation plans is vital, but actions speak louder than words—each government department must implement these plans and make real progress.   The publication emphasizes that success depends on decisive actions, well-designed policies, effective coordination among stakeholders, and a renewed commitment by the next government to achieving emission reduction goals, especially within the real economy.   The lasting value in this call to action will be in the follow-up. Now is the time to work with government to embed the recommendations and commit to appropriate strategies to ensure a consistent and clear direction of travel in all sectors of the economy. That way, investors can have greater confidence to provide funding for the required transition.
