Local governments must put the voices of people with lived experience of poverty at the core of anti-poverty policy making.   🤝 Collaboration between Councils, public services, third sector organisations and communities is necessary to disrupt existing power imbalances and design better policies to reduce poverty and ease hardship.   Our research with the Dundee Fairness Leadership Panel and Dundee Fighting for Fairness shows that a meaningful participatory approach relies on:   - Commitment to listening and action from key players who can make change happen. - Skilled individuals who provide trauma-informed support to people who have lived experiences​, with financial support to do so. - Partnership across a well-connected third sector and public sector.   ⚖️ We must learn from the success of local initiatives like the Dundee Fairness Leadership Panel to shift the balance of who makes decisions around poverty and inequality more widely.

NCVO and ACEVO are working closely with the government to develop the Civil Society Covenant - a new framework that aims to reset how government engages with civil society, creating lasting positive changes for charities, community groups, and social enterprises. Why does this matter? For too long, the relationship between civil society and government has been transactional. The Civil Society Covenant seeks to change this by establishing a shared commitment to work together on challenges facing our communities, creating a foundation for resilient, connected, and empowered communities across the UK. Today we stand united for End Digital Poverty Day, a powerful movement to raise awareness and take action towards eradicating digital poverty across the UK. But, what is digital poverty? As outlined by the Digital Poverty Alliance, digital poverty is ‘the inability to interact with the online world fully, when, where and how an individual needs to’. Three of the biggest factors contributing to digital poverty and enabling the digital divide are: 🟦Financial poverty 🟦Access 🟦Lack of education What does this mean? Digital poverty isn’t just about lacking internet access, it involves the broader inability to fully engage with the digital world. This means that many people are left behind, unable to access vital resources that can improve their lives. It highlights the fact that millions in the UK still lack basic digital access, which prevents them from fully participating in today's increasingly digital society. Did you know: ❓1 in 7 adults and 1 in 5 children in the UK are digitally excluded. ❓Over 19 million people over the age of 16 in the UK are experiencing some form of digital poverty. ❓The cost of broadband alone can be a major barrier, with many households unable to afford basic connectivity. Why should I care about digital poverty? Digital access is no longer a luxury. It's a necessity for education, employment, healthcare and social connection. Millions of people in the UK are being left behind because they don’t have access to the internet, devices or the digital skills needed to navigate today’s world. 🟦1 in 3 children who don’t have access to digital devices at home are unable to keep up with schoolwork, leading to widening educational gaps. 🟦The digitally excluded are more likely to face higher utility bills and reduced access to health services. Let's make digital access a right, not a privilege. That’s why we want to spotlight End Digital Poverty Day and the work of the Digital Poverty Alliance in their mission to eradicate digital poverty by 2030. There are less than two weeks left to apply for the Fairer Futures Fund Small Grants! The Fairer Futures Fund will support activities to improve outcomes and to tackle inequalities. The City-Wide Small Grants are for community organisations to address health inequalities for communities of identity across Birmingham. You can apply for: 💜 Up to £15,000 per year 💜 Up to £45,000 for projects over 3 years Applications are welcome for any amount or duration within these limits. While there are four themes available for applications, we particularly encourage projects focusing on the following themes. 🤝 Better Outcomes through Earlier Intervention and Treatment Ethnic Minority Backgrounds: Boost NHS health checks for hypertension, CVD, and mental health. Deprived Communities: Increase immunisation uptake, cancer screening, and dementia diagnosis in under 65s. Heterosexual Women: Prevent and treat blood-borne viruses (HIV, Hepatitis). 🌱 Best Start in Life Children: Support vaccinations, healthy start vouchers, reduce infant mortality, and prevent hospital admissions from injuries and asthma. Young Adults: Reduce conception rates under 18 and improve mental health. BREAKING NEWS: Gender identity census figures have been decertified. The Office for National Statistics census figures on gender identity have lost status as official statistics. The Office for Statistics Regulation review has concluded that the Census 2021 gender identity statistics published by ONS do not comply with important quality aspects of the Code of Practice for Statistics. The OSR has written to ONS and confirmed the cancellation of the accreditation of these statistics confirming these should instead be classified as official statistics in development. In his paper "Gender Identity in the 2021 Census of England and Wales: What Went Wrong?" published in January 2023, Professor Michael Biggs highlighted the problem with the methodology.
