When we started AccessOwl, the idea was clear: Okta is a poor fit for many companies looking for an easy way to manage their SaaS apps. Along the way, we kept hearing one piece of feedback repeatedly: “If you automate my SaaS tools, can you also show me where we’re currently wasting money?” We must have talked to hundreds of IT admins (many of whom I’m happy to now call customers). It quickly became clear that modern companies don’t just need to manage employee access to their SaaS apps - they require an entirely new set of tools that companies like Okta simply don’t provide. We recently signed a contract with a client to fix errors in their Android mobile app. During negotiations, some red flags were raised. Our studio works with a 50% advance payment, with the remaining balance paid upon completion. We communicated the price and all terms to the client. However, the client insisted on reducing the price by half and only paying a 10% deposit. I agreed, thinking that maybe their business wasn’t very large, and I wanted to accommodate them. I would later realize this was a mistake. Work began on the app, but the client didn’t provide the source code, so we had to disassemble it. We quickly found a bug: the previous developer had left an Easter egg. Instead of passing parameters entered through the interface for processing, they hardcoded static variables and handed them over to the client. Our team was shocked, and we immediately informed the client. The client requested expedited corrections and asked if we could make the necessary fixes. I assured them that everything was on track. The client also asked to shorten the timeline, and we agreed, but only if they increased the advance payment to 50% without changing the overall cost of the project. The client refused and accused me of breaching the contract. Despite all this, we’re still completing the app and will deliver it on time—no Easter eggs.
