There's a belief that UDAP dynamic client registration is the solution to our problems. I'm here to tell you why that's wrong. For starters: UDAP dynamic client registration is the API version of the standard "register your application" web form you encounter as a developer creating an app. Instead of filling in the details via the form, you submit them as attributes via API, immediately creating an application and sending you the client credentials you need to interact with a server. In the image below - yellow is today completed with manual and bespoke developer portals. UDAP promises to turn that into API calls. This seems really cool! It is really cool! But UDAP dynamic client registration is simply a technical mechanism to delegate registration to another entity I trust. If our issue today is trust (and it is), then there is not only zero incentive to use UDAP - there's a strong disincentive. In the overall ecosystem, dynamic client registration standardizes registration into a uniform, programmatic pathway and reduces overall ecosystem burden. That's something we should pursue. But without solving the mass trust problem, it only exacerbates the flaws in our national infrastructure today. Transparency is the only tool to radically enable trust between organizations that do not and cannot know each other.
