Yesterday, @OnSide launched our youth research, #GenerationIsolation. The report found that a staggering 1.3m young people in England spend most of their free time on a mobile phone, making it the most time-consuming activity outside of school! 52% of those want to cut back, 46% don’t know how. OnSide can support this. With access to safe, affordable spaces being a solution, we need much greater focus and investment in the 85% of time young people spend outside of school. How can we ask people to care for nature when they feel disconnected from her? New research from ARU, shows that UK adults are less connected with nature than most other countries, ranking just 59th out of 65 nations surveyed. That’s nuts! 🌰 The study also found that levels of nature-connection are influenced by socioeconomic and demographic factors: 🌱 Women reported both higher nature-connectedness and greater nature exposure than men - consistent with research showing women tend to have greater environmental concern and empathy with nature 🌱 Higher scores were significantly associated with better financial security, living in a rural location, a higher level of education, being in a committed relationship, and being in a racial majority Looks like we’ve got some serious work to do to help everyone to act and care for nature. The intangible cost of the charitable sector, which has been compounded by the woes facing it, must be considered when we talk about organisational and individual resilience. The Nonprofit Starvation Cycle, a detrimental cycle that results in many nonprofits being left bereft of decent infrastructure, bringing about diminished function and delivery, was coined (Gregory, A. G., Howard, D., 2009) to demonstrate how charities are not only underfunded but are not empowered to invest in themselves and spend in a manner that ensures they are fit for purpose and innovate, and retain talent and employees. For the individual, that means time, cognitive load, health and well-being are all expended to make up the stopgap. We have to acknowledge that delivery for beneficiaries is not the only cost. Let charities get ahead of business-critical emergencies arising from a lack of investment; whether in its infrastructures or employees. #resilience #charities #takesmoneytomakemoney

Does anyone know what the Resource Hub does? If you had to guess what would you say? Before you read on comment with your thoughts below! So what do we actually do? We are a small and mighty team who support our colleagues across Partnerships and Philanthropy with a variety of things with the goal of enabling them to have improved efficiency and more time to develop their relationships. We do this through the following functions; Special Events; we organise exclusive events that allow the fundraisers to get to know donors better, say thank you and also engage with new people who may be interested in the RSPCA work. Prospect Development; we research, find new prospects, carry out due diligence and help grow our pipeline. This brings in new people and also helps us maintain great relationships. Fundraising Proposals Development; we help develop and build exciting propositions for fundraising as well as providing support on fundraiser led proposals. We oversee reporting and evaluation essentially the end to end process around developing great proposals and reporting. I have a really exciting new role leading this area, check out the comments if this sounds up your street. Capability; we also oversee a wide variety of functional areas too, these are things like process, systems, performance and efficiencies. This can be anything from leading improvements to systems or developing new reports to inducting new team members and ensuring consistency across the department. Such an achievement from The Advocacy Project! It's tough to maintain quality services in this environment but we've managed to do it and we have the Quality Performance Mark to show for it. Super proud of the team for everything they do to support vulnerable people in London. So few people know about their right to advocacy when sectioned or lacking capacity after a capacity assessment. This work helps people speak up for their needs, navigate complex systems and protect people from abuse, confusion, loneliness, overwhelm.... I could go on. CHARITIES UNVEIL NATURE’S WORKFORCE National Trust, RSPB and WWF call on employees to speak up for nature at work and help put the nature and climate crisis at the heart of business decisions… Three of the UK’s largest conservation charities are calling on companies to put nature at the heart of all business decisions. Businesses have a critical role to play in tackling the nature and climate crisis, but only three in every 100 companies monitor nature and biodiversity risks. To address this, WWF, the RSPB and the National Trust have today (15 May) launched a new online guide designed to give workers at all businesses the confidence to take steps to make nature part of everyday decision making, from the factory floor to the boardroom. I’ve been pleased to be part of this Commission. Sober reading - essentially Britain is getting sicker and poorer and our poor population health is harming our individual prosperity and our national economy. Waiting lists are always the focus of politicians and the media and the need to create healthy communities has little focus because it’s complex requires cross dept organisation and sector working and a long term approach The Commission concludes that focusing on the wider determinants of health - communties, preventative interventions and ensuring good work are critical in turning this around - this is exactly what our Wellbeing of Future Generations Act in Wales seeks to achieve

It's clear that charities are facing a sustained and significant increase in demand for their vital services and a funding crisis. This is an important addition to the debate from Association of Charitable Foundations: 📈UK Grantmaking (https://lnkd.in/erSxD5X6) reports that Foundations have actually increased giving by 13% 📉 against a backdrop of falling income from most other sources - namely central govt (-33%), local authority (-23%) and individual donations (-14%) 👊Foundations alone “can’t resolve the core isssue - that demand far exceeds available resources - they can perhaps ease some of the growing tension” 💷 Demystifying "pauses and closures" - one foundation widely reported as ‘closed’ distributed £20 million in grants last year to its existing grantees Most importantly (and well articulated by Carol Mack): “Ultimately Foundations know that they can only fulfil their missions in partnership with the organisations and individuals that they support” So here at The Barratt Foundation at least, we will continue to work together with partners and grantees to do just that. #grantmaking #collaboration #pihlanthropy

*** 2024 GRANT FUNDING NOW OPEN *** Cornwall Women's Fund is now accepting applications for our 2024 grant funding! We aim to support community projects in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly supporting women’s mental health. For this round of funding projects with a focus on perinatal mental health will be given preferential consideration. In 2021, a team from Oxford University undertook in-depth research into the needs of women and girls across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. They considered existing research where it was available and interviewed charity and community leaders, and women from across the county to get a true picture of what really mattered to them and which areas it was difficult to find funding for. (Read the report here: https://bit.ly/3QLpgdv) One of the 4 key areas in their report “Understanding what matters to women and girls in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly” was women and girls mental health, identifying a particular lack of support for those accessing perinatal mental health services. Our Members have voted the area of Women and Girls Mental Health for our 2024 grant funding and we are now accepting applications. "Funder Relations Manager" is a really good job title for a fundraiser. It describes what this person actually does. Fundraisers often have ridiculous or confusing titles ["head of philanthropy": philanthropy is giving it out, not getting it in; "head of investment": investing already means something else (investing!) & many fdns have quite separate people for each etc.] I maintain a list of silly euphemisms for fundraising! But here is a good job title:

This article featured in the Asian Impact Management Review last year. In this piece, I explore the power of data-driven insights and staff training in revolutionising after-care support for elderly patients. This article shows the difference strong local political leadership can have in finding compromise through the noise and distraction of a vocal minority. We need to find a way to communicate what is right in the long term for places and communities, not just maintain the status quo to win easy votes in the short term.
