UK charity, Thomas Pocklington Trust (TPT) and its volunteer-led Sight Loss Councils (SLCs), have marked the end of Catch the Bus Month with the launch of a new approved training resource for bus and coach drivers.  The package is designed to help drivers provide best practice customer service to blind or partially sighted (BPS) passengers. The training, ‘Vision Impairment Awareness for Bus Drivers’, has the potential to impact all bus and coach drivers. Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) has approved the materials for member use and the package is now available in the CPT Compliance Manual. (See Chapter 12). Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has also confirmed that the content is suitable for use in Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) training. Blind and partially sighted volunteers created the training using first hand, lived experience of bus travel and worked closely with CPT member Brighton and Hove. The training is narrated by Paralympic Gold Medallist, Lora Fachie OBE.   The training resource aims to build confidence and inform bus and coach drivers on how best to support blind and partially sighted customers. Research by the TPT showed 65 per cent of BPS people cite access to public transport as a key issue that matters to them the most (Listening Month, 2022). Those with vision impairments are often very reliant on buses, and some simple examples of how drivers can help include stopping when they see BPS people at the bus stop, speaking to the BPS passenger, giving the bus number and destination, and offering support such as locating a spare seat and announcing their arrival stop.

1 December marks World AIDS day across the globe. Since 1988, communities have stood together on this day to show strength and solidarity against HIV stigma and to remember lives lost. Today I joined colleagues from Employee Network and EDI teams from across a broad spectrum of businesses at a special NEXUS LGBTQ+ breakfast briefing hosted by Royal Bank of Canada. An expert panel and speakers from a range of organisations and charities including the Terrance Higgins Trust discussed the various challenges facing people living with HIV in the workpace today and what we can do in respective organisations to change the dial and improve things. Speaker and physician Dr Nneka Nwokolo set the scene by talkig through the the outlook in the UK today. Here are a few snippets that caught my attention: Globally, 700 babies a day are born with HIV HIV is still a problem in the UK despite effective treatment There 100,000 people living with HIV in the UK today, 5% of which are undiagnosed in 2022/23 there was over a 50% increase in people diagnosed with HIV in the UK. Of which, 7 percent rise of ethnic minority men, 3 percent rise of white men, 36 percent rise of men who have sex with women and 30 percent rise of women who have sex with men. HIV does not discriminate In a 2022 survey, 74 percent of people reported stigma associated with their HIV status, 72 percent in relation to dating and 50 percent relating to accessing healthcare Many people dont know or want to believe that undetectable = unstransmissable What can you do? Get tested and promote testing in your workplaces Promote a culture of normalising discussions about sexual health to end stigma Learn and educate others.

Changes to Driver CPC 🚚🚌 Being an HGV, bus, or coach driver in the UK requires a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). In 2023, the government consulted on making significant changes to this qualification, aimed at making it more flexible for drivers who operate solely within the UK. From 3 December 2024, the way drivers can stay qualified is evolving. These changes are designed to offer more adaptable options for maintaining your professional status. Additionally, from 1 February 2025, the process for returning to professional driving will become more straightforward, easing the transition back into the industry. These changes are not about scrapping Driver CPC but rather enhancing flexibility and accessibility. Stay updated and make the most of these new opportunities to keep your career on the road. NEW PT MONITOR BLOG POST: Busy autumn quarter aids demand recovery as 40% Elizabeth Line growth helps lift demand above 90% of pre-Covid levels The recovery in demand for rail services in Britain from the Covid pandemic continued into the autumn of last year, with the pace of growth accelerating a little. Non Elizabeth Line passenger numbers were 17.1% higher than the same quarter in 2022, reaching a new post lockdown high. Not the usual journey for me these days, but I find myself travelling to/from Nottingham to/from Newcastle courtesy of Cross Country Trains , Northern Trains and East Midlands Railways - quite the mix. All performed seamlessly, impeccably, all on time and the staff, information and services excellent from each provider. The world of 'split ticketing' was entered to secure some cash savings - long gone are the days of priv passes and free travel! But travelling by train does still give you time to view, observe, ponder and reflect during the journey. Nearly 200 years since the first railway emerged and 140 years after the Permanent Way Institution was formed, how are our railways doing today then? Today's service was simply excellent all round as described above. The ride quality in places was a little sub-optimal, and it wasn't the stock as it rode very well on other sections. Lineside vegetation has run wild in places and our trains were still striking branches at speed in many areas (Alfreton take note!). I still can't grasp the mentality of cutting down vegetation and then leaving it at the lineside? Our railway looks unkempt in so many locations - as professionals if we don't care, why should others care about our industry? Lineside developments. Isn't it incredible how much residential development is being permitted right up to the railway boundary. York to Sheffield via Leeds being a good example. Planners and Developers are undoubtedly providing us with future track access challenges, future noise and vibration complaints, future vegetation complaints, future boundary fencing complaints, increased fly-tipping....and more perhaps. Scrap! Remember JC's 'Operation Clean sweep'? Probably time for another then. So much material and waste value, so many hazards and obstacles, so many rotted builder's bags still loaded! Oh, and that multi million pound 08 Euro tamper parked at Chesterfield, crikey give it a jet wash!! If its like that on the outside, heaven knows what its like inside! Rant over. After 51 years in the industry (and still going), I really do appreciate as a former Track Maintenance and Renewal Engineer that budgets, resources and track access all make for challenging constraints, but I'm sure with a bit of firm guidance quick wins could be made, especially insisting supply chain and third party contractors take all left overs away , and tidying our own mess up as we go too! Having said that, we should be proud of our railway and high speed journeys here in the UK underscore how amazing our industry is and can really be going forward. (I'll now crawl back under my rock and begin to perhaps consider the purchase of some shares in steel pallisade fencing suppliers and manufacturers! ) 😆

As its World Mental Health Day, give a thought for my fellow Foster Carers as we truly do a fabulous job daily, changing young people’s futures, seeing them grow and prosper with all the difficulties they have endured whether they are babies of a few days old or those that have had a tough upbringing for one reason or another. There are days that are sometimes difficult, especially when you have a part/full time Job to manage at the same time. With all the issues we have to deal with (and the list is endless), we still help these young people grow on a daily basis, understanding feelings and or behaviours and questions they may have which can be testing and mentally draining, at the same time not forgetting that we also need the continuing understanding and support from our employers and those around us for a job we truly care about. There is always a need for Foster Carers, and there’s no better way to see success, when you see your foster child(ren) thrive through the support we give on a daily basis 24/7. Remember, if someone you see on a regular basis seems different - ask the question “Are you Okay”, but also mean it when you ask, as you may not like the answer, and then think to yourself what will I do with the answer they give me. Everyone needs support and loving everyday and remember to speak to those that you may have forgotten to speak too recently to let them know you are there and offer support if you are able too. Life is too short, but a quick chat and listen, may make a difference to someone’s day and/or life.

Motor Transport. Driver CPC reforms to start within weeks Changes to the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC), which include allowing drivers to take 3.5-hour long courses, have been **hailed as a boost to UK road safety.** HOW???????? Am I missing something????

Whilst I have diversity and disability within my close family, as a larger white man it could be easy to miss safety or legibility issues experienced by others when considering movement within the built and natural environments. It was great, therefore, to receive the latest CIHT Transportation Professional magazine, entitled Everyone Everywhere, which outlines why inclusion is so important in a transport context. Highlighting the gender gap (on many levels) within the transport industry, it outlines a manifesto for the CIHT prior to the general election before providing articles on: - recruitment and training for a diverse workforce - designing for dementia - gender equality - how to engage with young people - designing for neurodiversity Some really useful topics that require further thought and reading.
