As someone who is competitive by nature, I love a good league table – especially when the project I worked on is at the top. Volans worked with Unilever on its first Climate Policy Engagement Review and it’s now official that the review has set a new best practice. According to InfluenceMap’s assessment, it is the first such review to fully meet the expectations of The Global Standard on Responsible Climate Lobbying, which is backed by investor groups such as Principles for Responsible Investment, Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), Ceres, Inc. and Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR). What we need now is a race to the top. We’ve demonstrated it’s possible to score 100% for ‘robustness of corporate climate policy engagement review’, so I hope we’ll soon see more green at the top of this table. Who’s up for it? I truly hope this government views the green transition as encompassing more than just climate change, clean energy, and net zero. The climate crisis and the nature crisis are interconnected, but they are not one and the same. I hope to see bold actions not only on climate but also on nature. There should be funding, support, and legislation to plant, protect, and restore trees and woodlands for the long-term benefit of climate, people, and wildlife. While there will be much discussion in the coming days and weeks, it is only through commitments, backed by funding and actions, that we can deliver what our people, climate, and nature need. If we are headed for exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming , with 2.7 degrees the current trend target, and the actions of the COP's not reducing overall emissions , then the importance of the UK's National Adaptation Programme to Climate Change (NAP3) becomes even more important. Yet the review of the current programme by the Climate Change Committee in March this year , said that it a) falls short of what we need b) the current approach is not working c) an urgent review of NAP 3 is needed now Its worth a read .. we do need to prepare ourselves better - and sooner .. https://lnkd.in/eTB9krCE

The right climate solutions can be unlocked by the right government policies. Positive, constructive engagement by businesses and industry groups is critical to this process.     We’re delighted that InfluenceMap assessed our corporate climate policy engagement review as best practice. To drive progress towards our net zero ambition, we require increased transparency across our value chain – this includes policy engagement. The results are in: the public backs policies to promote heat pumps, solar and wind power Research by the The Behavioural Insights Team, commissioned by Nesta involved focus groups and an online experiment with over 3,000 UK adults, looking at various possible policies that could contribute to reducing the UK’s carbon emissions. Some of the policies, such as the phase out of gas boilers, are already planned by the Government, while others, such as a meat reduction, are entirely speculative. ➡️ 9 in 10 people say they wouldn’t oppose the expansion of green infrastructure like wind and solar power ➡️ 7 in 10 are unopposed to phasing out boiler installations in favour of heat pumps and other eco-friendly systems by 2035, with calls to help more low-income households afford them ➡️ Frequent flyer levies, short-haul flight bans, expansion of Ultra Low Emission Zones into new cities, and a future ban on the sale of new combustion vehicles also all have majority support ➡️ Potential net-zero policies that might restrict individuals’ everyday lives, such as meat reduction policies, are less popular without adjustments to make them fairer The research underscores the importance of engaging with the public in the transition to net zero. When asked what would make them more accepting of net-zero policies in general, respondents prioritised transparency about costs and who will be affected (54%), evidence that the policy will be effective (51%), and measures to ensure no unfair burden (44%).
