I really enjoyed our panel session this morning hosted by the Capitals Coalition's Graeme Nicholls and Martine Van Weelden. A good introduction to the Framework for Integrated Decision-Making (https://lnkd.in/eyPP77SG) for the scientific community. It is through collaboration of science, business, governments and NGOs that we will advance in building balanced decision making and ensuring we value our natural, social & human and produced (including financial) capital that we will enable living within safe and just earth system boundaries, or simply put .. enable a sustainable and pleasant life now and for future generations. Thanks Richard Kooloos and Luke Brander for joining me in the panel. Great to have my views from collaborating with our clients on integrated capitals strategies and valuations complemented with your experiences in the financial and academia sector. Some lessons learned are that we need to ensure transparent communications on values (monetary valuation being one of them), understand how values might be different for different people (context), transparency on value factors and level of confidence in these, education on what valuation of nature and social matters looks like. Main final point, don't let not being 100% sure stop you from taking action. With a 70% certainty taking action makes sense. My takeaway from Innovation Zero: accurate, consistent public messaging is now as important as innovation itself. It was great to attend IZ last week with Richard McClay Charlie Worsley and Tim Bartmann. Here are some things I kept hearing: 1️⃣ The majority of tech required to solve the crises exists, and is either being used today or well past feasibility proof. The focus needs to be on ensuring there is investment, policy, supply chains and talent to roll this stuff out at scale. 2️⃣ In the UK, we need to make home-retrofitting “mainstream”. 40% of housing stock predates WW2. I’m not sure people fully grasp the necessity for fabric-retrofits in (say) the same way they know they need to get an EV. More policy and campaigning are required to convince and incentivise 3️⃣ Keeping track of policy and regulations is hard. There is a mountain of policy and regs worldwide that policy makers and business need to keep on top of. With the latest advancements in language processing tech, could more be done to aid sifting through this mountain? 4️⃣ Messaging - without venturing too far into politics, some figures suggested there is a risk that NZ is becoming the new vessel for populism. I find this concerning, as all my points above call for a unified voice from industry, academia and government to roll out change. More than ever, it hit home that moving to a NZ world is a a much a cultural change as it is a technological change

SB+CO's research on practitioners' perspectives on #CSRD was featured in the Financial Times 'The Big Read' today 🎙 👀 Nick Wyver, Nigel Salter and I spoke to 30+ sustainability and finance leaders on their experience implementing the requirements of CSRD. A mixed picture of good intentions and challenges in practice emerged - it's great to see this discussion hitting the mainstream. The key question for so many practitioners right now is - how do we prepare for our CSRD reporting obligations and at the same time generate legitimate insight and value for the business? The risk of companies preparing 100 pages of dense text and data tables - that only consultants doing gap analyses actually read - is all too high. This Thursday there was a huge array of brilliant events happening at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) across the EMESA region for World Mental Health Day 💚 and Black History Month 🌟 . From global "Authentic Conversation" panels from our AccessAbility network featuring our people opening up about their personal stories and moving the dialogue on how we talk about mental health, to the BOLD@BCG and Women@BCG event in London on "Redefining Success" with Author Candice Braithwaite, to Energizing Breathwork Classes and Relaxing Clay Workshops in Berlin - there was a lot on offer today. Some of my takeaways: - Understanding more about the the wealth of resources available in our business for our employees to get support and advice. And finding the pathway to become a Mental Health First Aider 🙌 . - "You have to be cool with that fact that your way of doing things is going to upset people" 😎 from Candice when talking about her how her career and family life co-exist. A much needed reminder after a week of doing battle with the nursery and carrying far too much guilt around. - Gratitude vs. list making : a brilliant discussion about how practicing gratitude can be a hugely rewarding part of some people's Mental Health Toolkit. But that also, some people get the same positive impact from ticking things off a to-do list (I'll leave you to guess what box I fall into. ✅ ) - "Sometimes what you are feeling doesn't fit the mold of what you believe depression or anxiety to be, but that doesn't mean it isn't depression or anxiety". Incredible openness and vulnerability in a lot of the spaces I joined today, and lots of brilliant reminders that there is a big scale in terms of the challenges we all face, but that at no point on that scale should seeking help not be an option. - "Having my therapy sessions in the diary in advance is like knowing I have the edges of the pool to grab on to when I need some help to swim" 🏊 and "having therapy in the family calendar means that my children are growing up in an environment where Alexa reminds us that at 5pm Mummy has therapy and if that normalises mental health support for them so early on then that is a big win" 🤲 . Two sentences that that hugely resonated with me and where I was nodding along thinking yes, yes, yes.

Over the past few weeks, I've had multiple founders ask if fundraising slows or stops in the summer months. So, I wanted to share my thoughts and some data (thanks Peter Walker & Carta!) for other founders wondering the same thing. Here are a few highlights from the data: - Timeline Insight: Note the subtitle: deals by month SIGNED. It typically takes a few weeks to a few months from the first meeting to close a deal. - December Activity: Despite December often being slow for new investor meetings, it consistently shows a high percentage of deals being signed. This is due to conversations that were initiated prior to December. - Summer Months: Contrary to common belief, summer months like June, July, and August don't see a significant drop in deal activity. Understanding these trends can help you better strategize your fundraising efforts throughout the year. My experience: Over the past year with FTFC, I haven't noticed any slowdown in investor conversations during the summer months. I've had productive discussions with many investors throughout the summer, and they've all been open to exploring aligned deal flow. Investors, what do you think?

I was recently reminded of this chat David Savage and I had on Tech Talks couple of years ago about inclusion and how we were connecting on intersectionality. It makes me so happy that I’m now in a place where with DEI we’re having a much clearer link to social justice and healing. This is where the DEI convo shifts to and we are here for it! Let’s continue focusing on changing the mindsets, encouraging open dialogue, embracing risk taking and creating safe spaces where it’s also ok to fail and keep learning. That’s psychological safety and unity. That’s where we can make change authentic and sustainable. After the tragic death of Mike Lynch, here is media coverage of him in 2000, updated 2010 in #ManagementToday. Has the UK learnt much since then , and does the business world reflect the need for social mobility and cognitive diversity ? What makes for an attractive VC for innovators? I've been interviewing startup founders in recent months - focussing on those who either have significant traction or previous exits. They consistently pick out two things they look for in an investor: 1. Understanding their industry vertical. When a VC doesn't understand it at all, it shows. 2. Caring about the founder. Or at least making the bare minimum effort to pretend that you do. It's pretty astonishing, but VCs could be missing out on some substantial deals because they miss this, low, bar.

With the number of economically inactive adults in the UK growing by more than 10% since 2020 to 9.4m – what is the solution to help the long-term sick be able to work? Helping this demographic return to the workforce could boost the country’s #GDP by almost £200bn, but finding long-term solutions means tackling the root causes of the issue. This will require strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors and - as this FT piece highlights- with such a tight labour market, businesses are increasingly motivated to help. #healthcare

A callout to my network. Are you a homelessness service provider for outreach services or do you know any CEO's or the like running homelessness outreach services you could connect me with. I’m currently at MIT Sloan School of Management undertaking my 2 week entrepreneurial immersion as part of our Exec MBA with QUT (Queensland University of Technology). My team has chosen to pitch the idea of a digital platform that co-ordinates outreach services to provide opportunities for greater impact through complementary providers and data sharing. We are at the initial investigation phase gathering feedback from NGOs who would form part of the platform ecosystem and asking them a couple of quick questions. (1) Would you see value in a platform which allows you to see the planned and real time locations of other service providers and their schedules to coordinate service delivery impact via an AI scheduling assistant, as well as enables standardised data collection for impact reporting?​ (2) What features would you need in such a platform for it to be of value to your organisation?​ (3) What barriers would prevent you from using the platform - what wouldn't you want?​ Would you be willing to answer the above questions or send them on to other you know. [BENCHMARKING | HOW PERPLERXITY BUILDS PRODUCT] Johnny Ho, the company’s co-founder and head of product, gave an inside look at how Perplexity builds product — which to me feels like what the future of product development will look like for many companies: 1) AI-first: They’ve been asking AI questions about every step of the company-building process, including “How do I launch a product?” Employees are encouraged to ask AI before bothering colleagues. 2) Organized like slime mold: They optimize for minimizing coordination costs by parallelizing as much of each project as possible. 3) Small teams: Their typical team is two to three people.
