What are your top tips, pitfalls to avoid or useful resources when looking at data strategy and governance? I'm currently looking at these areas as part of my degree apprenticeship with Multiverse. I like Data Orchard's data maturity assessment tool, designed with DataKind, specifically aimed at the not-for-profit sector. I’ve seen a lot of lovely diagrams showing how to do participation. But it’s impossible to design participation in a diagram. It’s different everytime and held together by magical people. Before Muhammod Shofi joined Camden Giving we had 300 ex-grantmakers, now we have a community of 300 allumni members. There isn’t a diagram for what Shofi has done (actually, we do have one somewhere, but don’t look at that, look at this photo). Tonight we met at Zappi and talked mental health, physical health and regiously motivated hate crime. Big challenges that we can only tackle through participation. Less diagrams, more magical people with the resources they need to mobilise.

What a great first week at Policy in Practice. I’ve been enjoying learning about the fantastic work we do in driving policy engines such as the #BetterOffCalculator, which helps 10,000 people daily via GOV.UK. To commence my time here, I attended a @resfoundation pre-election event on the cost of poor health, which covered what rising health-related spending means for the UK and its next government. An incoming government must: 1. Place its understanding of health-related benefits in the wider context; 2. Seek to design and further develop the benefits system, and; 3. Tread carefully! Cuts to disability support can leave people in financial insecurity. Looking forward to working with partners to help them and their residents navigate government policy, and make active decisions that improve lives.

Meet Richard Campbell, Deputy Head of Profession for Data Scientists and part of the Office for National Statistics' furniture since 2010. Rich has countless years of experience as a Statistician and Data Scientist, so I've picked his brains to share with you all for this current round of recruitment. Tell me about your ONS journey to date.... I joined ONS in 2010 after a decade working as a statistician in various government departments. I worked on the development and production of inflation statistics for a number of years before moving into change and transformation roles, via a brief detour to our Organisational Development team. For the last four years, I’ve been running our Reproducible Data Science and Analysis team and focusing on the growth of data science capability and careers in ONS, while leading the team in helping transform the UK’s economic statistics. Best things about working for ONS..... I love it that ONS plays such an important role in shaping the national conversation and policy making. When you start looking, you’ll notice that our statistics and analysis are mentioned in the news every day. Even more important is the people that I get to work with across the organisation. They’re a great bunch and all passionate about their roles and inclusive of others. Why someone should apply for one of our roles...... ONS is a great place to come and work as a Data Scientist. The range of data that you will get to work with is amazing and you will get to play a part in helping the UK through production of better statistics and analysis. From a career perspective, the variety of work and the focus we put into helping you develop your skills are massive boosts. Tips for applications....... Make sure you spend time to read through the application process as it is a bit different to the private sector. Would highly recommend the Evalato academy as a great way to learn about putting an awards management scheme in place - from the initial planning and marketing, through to evaluation and announcing your winners. https://lnkd.in/ehuDm_nY It's free, you don't need to be using Evalato's platform (although it's great too!) to take part, and you get a nifty little certificate at the end as well...(I'm now apparently deemed capable of applying the principles and best practices of awards management - yay!). Lots of great insights in particular on how you can score your evaluations in the best way and set up the right categories for specific audiences. #awards #AwardsManagement

Trust around data is so important and librarians are the third most trusted profession so there could be a very beneficial link between conventional libraries and Labour’s proposed National Data Library. If I set aside my struggles with the primary framing of conventional libraries as collections / repositories and consider this as a British Library / other National Libraries specific analogy - then I think there’s some interesting points made by Gavin and I wonder whether the library sector is considering its role / skills here and gearing up for what it could do.

Significant changes to Facebook fundraising tools in the EU. We highly recommend UK charities proceed as if this will roll out to the UK too in the not too distant future, and examine what giving channels you have in place and whether these will be affected. It's time to test performance of alternatives now so you can set benchmarks and understand any potential shortfall.

I'm in the process of developing a data dashboard that pulls together economic data in the UK and puts it at the fingertips of users. I'm talking employment or pay data, segmented nationally, regionally and sometimes all the way down to town level. I'm also thinking of ways to incorporate other, interesting and esoteric information: data about how people spend their time (sleeping, eating, watching boxsets etc) as well as consumer facing information on inflation, prices, retail sales etc, etc. Over the next few months I'm planning to roll out the dashboard for use by others and I'm keen to know how useful this sort of thing might be to people. if it's something you are interested in, have suggestions about, or if there's data you're interested to uncover, then comment or hit me up in my DM!!

🚀🔥 #DataWars: Where #datahero aka ME was blocked on linkedin.. 😬 WTFFFF!! 🌟 In the dazzling metropolis of Cybit, #datahero noticed that lots of places were recruiting for #biconsultants and #bireportwriters , #Datahero aka Chrissie reached out to one such recruitment agency to see if they'd be interested in a collab. #Datahero's trusty Cybit consultants, experts in their field had availability, the recruiter could refer #datahero to their client (for a referral fee of course) until they found their own #datahero. 💪📊 And on the other side, lurking in the shadows, is the notorious Dr. Datawreck—a villain with a penchant for chaos and corrupted databases. 🦹‍♂️🔍 Cackling, he told the recruiter that they didn't need a #datahero, that they could find an expert themselves and that they should block Chrissie immediately. #datahero was shocked, it seemed like such a perfect solution to their problems, and after so many victories she could not believe that someone actually listened to the evil dr datawreck. Never mind though, Armed with a dazzling smile and a pocket protector, Chrissie is still the #DataHero we all need but don't know we all want. 🌟📈 To see #datahero live and in person I will be at Teesside Airport today for Constructing Excellence in the North East 's networking event. Last week, the LPIP Hub released the Inclusive and Sustainable Local Economic Performance Evidence Review. The review provides an overview of place-based inclusive and sustainable economic development policy at both a national and local level in the UK. The underlying reasons for differential capacity and capability within places and how this impacts the development of innovative economic development initiatives. Pulling together evidence around how local place-based partnerships can improve capacity and capabilities within place, providing both UK and international examples of what works in place-based partnerships. Is snow clearing sexist? 🤔 It might sound like a wild question, but when you look at the data, the answer might surprise you. This isn’t about calling out snow plow operators; it’s about using data to deliver better services. Caroline Criado Perez’s brilliant book, Invisible Women, sheds light on how many cities’ snow-clearing policies are actually biased—though not intentionally—toward men’s commuting patterns. Here’s the thing: men and women travel differently. Men tend to commute by car, while women are more likely to “trip chain”—taking multiple, shorter trips throughout the day (think school drop-offs, grocery runs, and care for relatives). Women also walk and rely on public transportation more often. Yet most cities prioritize clearing roads for vehicles first, leaving sidewalks and public transit routes an afterthought. What does this mean? It means that women are more likely to suffer injuries from icy sidewalks and face greater mobility challenges in winter. Studies in Sweden found that when snow-clearing priorities were shifted to pedestrian paths and public transport, injury rates plummeted. Equity isn’t just about making a moral judgment—it can and should be a technical skill for every professional. Using disaggregated data to understand different travel patterns allows cities to provide services that truly work for everyone. It’s not about being ‘fair’—it’s about being excellent at the job. Canadian cities like Calgary and Ottawa are still using outdated, male-centered snow clearing methods. But we can do better. After 100/1000 years great revelation — people take drugs and drink! Somebody tell Alcohol Digest, WHO, Richard Baum, the Recovery Movement, Sober Curious, et al. It’s a miracle when an outlet/public health thrust takes into account the eternal truth that people use substances — at the same time that omnipotent forces around the earth/US tell people never drink alcohol/avoid drugs/if you’ve missed this message instantly join us in recovery. In 10-20-50-100 years when you look at this space which will be true? 1.No more psychoactive substances on earth! 2.No more psychoactive substance users! 3.Just like the Prohibition Party was a major American political force, the Recovery Party will become one. 4.New chemical compounds people pursue will continually pop up. 5.Drug deaths will remain a prominent part of modern reality.
