It's great that we're seeing trust being regained in energy suppliers. They have an important role to play in the energy transition, and with their intimate customer touchpoint are well placed to be supporting the move to net zero by engaging customers with excellent experiences, information and support. Yesterday’s Autumn budget saw key changes across the fiscal landscape, with strong rhetoric around strengthening the UK’s commitment to net zero. While technologies, such as CCUS and hydrogen saw an increase in funding, the North Sea story presents a more nuanced question for the UK energy market.   Although the government has previously balanced tax and investment incentives in the North Sea, this recent budget has presented a shift from the status quo. As EPL and headline rates rise, the economic viability of both new and existing North Sea projects are challenged. This will likely result a drop in investment into North Sea oil and gas, hence driving down production volumes. This is such an important message for our energy sector. The reality is that there is no going back; we can’t put the cap back on private sector investment and can’t go back to loading up the country balance sheet while the rest of the world is creating competitive markets.

Building on the report from Public First on business decarbonisation, Energy UK has considered some of the options to grow the CPPA market. Government support in this area could empower more businesses to invest in new low carbon generation, contributing to a cleaner power system and providing them with long-term electricity price certainty. To unlock the CPPA market and improve transparency on green tariffs, reforms to the Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO) and fuel mix disclosure systems are essential.
