🚀 Mastering IoT Success: Solar Tracker with #LTE #CAT1 bis and Dual-Band #GNSS for Centimetre-Precision Tracking.  In the food industry, compliance with the cold chain is mandatory according to current hygiene standards. In the pharmaceutical industry, the requirements are even higher in some cases. The temperature, door opening, and position in real-time are documented. This requires a tracker with a solar cell, mobile radio, GNSS and a #WiFi / #Bluetooth hub. The device is mounted on the container door, either permanently or with a magnet. 🌐 Why LTE CAT1 bis? LTE CAT1 bis was chosen for its cost-effective, widespread availability across Europe compared to #LTEM and #NBIoT. Despite almost a decade in use, 3GPP LPWAN technologies still lack complete roaming support with SIM cards. LTE-M modules have become more expensive than LTE CAT1 bis modules, and their power-saving modes often fail under roaming conditions. With a solar cell generating more energy than needed, LTE-M's PSM mode is irrelevant. Thus, LTE CAT1 bis offers broader network access at lower communication costs. 📡 Innovative Antenna Solution  For the LTE antenna, we selected Harald Naumann's #5G #antenna module, featuring a patented layout by Abracon. This module is designed for cost-effective production and tuning. Each custom-manufactured antenna module includes a coded resistor field, allowing thousands of unique versions to be identified. This flexibility ensures precise adaptation to specific customer needs. 🛰️ Dual-Band GNSS Module for Precision The dual-band GNSS module enhances accuracy by receiving on two frequencies, enabling the correction of timing errors and providing positioning within a few centimetres. The GNSS antenna, also dual-band and dual-fed, retains its circular polarisation even when mounted on the edge of the PCB. In contrast, single-fed GNSS antennas lose circular polarisation, reducing both antenna gain and positioning accuracy. 📡 Wifi / Bluetooth  The combi module with WiFi and Bluetooth already has an integrated PCB antenna. Care was taken to ensure that the antenna for 2400 MHz was not placed near the LTE antenna. Antennas in frequency ranges that are close together influence each other. 🔧 Challenges in Antenna Placement The large solar cell presents challenges in antenna placement, offering limited space within the device. By positioning the antenna module in the centre of the long side, we preserved space on the right for the GNSS antenna. 🔍 How to Develop a Successful #IoT Device with #LTE, #GNSS, and #Bluetooth LE?To create a groundbreaking IoT device, start by analyzing successful cellular gadgets. Let's emulate the excellence of the HMD #Nokia 3210 from Finland, discard the flaws, and add the missing features. The result? Instead, a soldered SIM card by Crout is ideal. The Crout True Global IoT SIM card with multi-IMSI ensures the best global coverage at low operating costs. 📶 Antenna Design The current #antenna specifications are unknown. For optimal performance, we recommend our selected LTE module with a separate GNSS SoC. For ultra-low-cost solutions, the integrated ARM Cortex A7 is adequate. However, for energy efficiency with a modern OS, Zephyr with #CoAP DTLS 1.2 CID is the perfect combination. Bluetooth Low Energy fits well for configuration and external sensors. "Emergency vehicle detection without external microphones". I submitted the below abstract for AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES EUROPE 2024 event in November https://lnkd.in/dzmM8F5W. I will inform if accepted. Emergency vehicles on call require priority and therefore violate traffic regulations. If they are not recognized in time, this can lead to a higher probability of accidents. Statistics show that emergency vehicles are 5 to 6 times more likely to be involved in traffic accidents than other vehicles driven by human drivers. For autonomous driving, the ability to recognize emergency vehicles in time is crucial to avoid fatal accidents. It is also absolutely necessary to take appropriate actions and prioritize emergency vehicles. Autonomous vehicles use a variety of sensors such as video cameras, radar, lidar and ultrasonic sensors. With these sensors combined with artificial intelligence, they can see other cars and people on the road and “sense" nearby objects. However, all these sensors are not helpful when it comes to detecting an emergency vehicle that is 200 meters away, crossing a red light at an intersection, turning a corner or obscured by other cars. In most cases, emergency vehicles can only be identified by their sirens, which are acoustic signals. The usual devices for detecting acoustic signals are microphones. For reliable siren detection, the microphones must be placed outside the vehicle cabin, which is a common solution today. However, such an approach requires microphones and their protection that can withstand wind, rain, hail, chemicals, jet washers and even the impact of small stones. This solution is costly and requires specialized microphones and vehicle designs. Alango Technologies offers an alternative approach based on the use of vibration sensors attached to the car windows. The window glass vibrates due to external sounds and this vibration can be used in a similar way to an external microphone signal to detect the siren of an emergency vehicle. The problem is that sounds inside the vehicle, such as loud music, also causes the glass to vibrate, completely masking a relatively weak vibration signal caused by distant external sirens. Alango Technologies has patened a technology that allows the vibration sensor signal to be cleaned of components caused by internal sounds while retaining external sounds such as sirens. Alango offers a complete solution including a siren detection technology optimized for a vibration signal. After the presentation, the audience will better understand the importance of a technology for emergency vehicle detection and the issues related to existing solutions, and learn about an alternative solution for emergency vehicle detection for autonomous and assisted driving. Major announcement: Teltonika IoT Group now has a new CEO. Arvydas Paukštys transfers the management of the Teltonika company group and remains in charge of the investment management company AGP Investments. Marius Derencius takes over as president of the company Teltonika IoT Group, which controls the #Teltonika brand companies. “These changes stem from the business development plans of the investment company AGP Investments. By implementing them, we are consistently increasing the number of our business activities. I am handing over the management of Teltonika to an experienced leader who has dedicated many years to the development of our IoT products business. I believe that this change will allow Teltonika to focus on its ambitious global growth plans, while my increased involvement in AGP Investments’ projects will help other businesses to grow faster,” says A. Paukštys. Moreover, new groups of companies will be formed, operating separately from the Teltonika brand companies. Their activities will include electronics manufacturing services and semiconductor chip design and manufacturing. The aim is to separate the companies developing IoT products from the companies providing electronics manufacturing, component supply, and semiconductor chip manufacturing and design services. In a world run by lightning-fast 5G and gigabit speeds, Planex Communications has introduced a compact and lightweight 56k USB dial-up modem, bringing back a true relic from the ’90s. 📖 Fairy tales in #IoT. How many storytellers are there in #wireless IoT? The last storyteller I personally met claimed to save 90% of energy with #NBIoT when using its internal SIM card on the radio module. Forty more listeners were in the room. No one contradicted him? No one—well, I did it with one sentence and didn't expose him with facts. 🔍 The facts about energy consumption in #LPWAN have already been determined in the study "Energy Consumption in LPWAN with #NBIoT, #LoRaWAN, and #Sigfox." Details and link to the study in the comment. 📊 The energy consumption of a SIM card in sleep mode is in the range of uA for NB-IoT. The internal SIM card in the module also requires uA. You save a few uA. At the same time, you get a vendor lock and only a few NB-IoT or NB-IoT / #LTEM modules to choose from. 📡 The named module is based on an old chipset. Newer chipsets like the Sony Altair ALT1350 require less energy. In total, an #AltairSoC ALT1350 with a #multiIMSI SIM card from #Crout requires less sleep current than the internal SIM card in the old chipset with a vendor lock. 💡 Sending once a day with NB-IoT requires much more energy than the sleep or idle current within 24 hours. 💬 Internet SIM card with single IMSI versus External SIM card from Crout with Multi IMSI. Who wins in the competition? Who would you bet on? 🎯 Crout sends Harald Naumann with experience in wireless communication and Achim Kraus a software expert into the competition. Achim has optimized the code over 24 months and controls the Multi IMSI via the host. 🌐 Why will #Mioty and #OMS5 based on #TSUNB replace #LoRaWAN? LoRaWAN uses an old modulation technique called #CSS, which was invented in Germany. After the patent expired, a French company used it to create a precursor to #LoRa, which #Semtech later acquired. This made LoRa a single-source, patented technology. In Europe, LoRa uses 1000 MHz of bandwidth for just 8 channels, occupying the channel for a long time with only a few bytes. Mioty and OMS5, on the other hand, use TS-UNB, which is technology-neutral and compatible with almost any radio IC that supports MSK and GMSK. They take 100 KHz or 12.5 KHz for 24 sub-channels only. The OMS group has deployed far more IoT nodes than the LoRaWAN Alliance, and OMS5 now supports TS-UNB. 🔋 Energy Efficiency: TS-UNB is about 4.5 times more energy-efficient than LoRaWAN, even with redundancy against packet loss. Up to 50% of sub-packets can be lost without affecting the data, whereas LoRaWAN lacks sub-packets and has a high packet loss rate. Each sub-packet with TS-UNB is only 15 ms long, followed by a 150 ms pause. These short packets and reduced transmission time help preserve battery life, which is the most expensive component in an IoT device. TS-UNB allows for the use of much cheaper batteries. 🌍 Ecosystem: The TS-UNB ecosystem is extensive. The number of devices using Mioty Alliance and #OMS Group protocols is significantly larger than those using LoRaWAN. The largest LoRaWAN operator has only 7 million participants and focuses on submetering rather than LPWAN. 🔄 Decision Time: LoRaWAN or Mioty/TS-UNB? The decision has been made.
