The England Men's national team really does seem to follow a public sentiment and media hype cycle. With the tournament impending, media interest triggers England fever... the team could go all the way. With a win under the belt, belief sets in. An over-indulgence in Three Lions puff. World-class. The nation chants it's coming home. A disappointing performance ensues. Results may fail to meet those high expectations. Hope is punctured, interest wanes. We enter the trough of disillusionment. But results do go the right way, there's progression. There's cautious optimism in the air until a recalibration of performance expectations reestablishes itself. The speed at which this cycle develops differs from tournament to tournament, but it is observed. As with the original Gartner Technology version, no perspectives are offered on how we accelerate through the cycle from one phase to the next (more positive) phase of sentiment, but I'd love to hear them. Or maybe we shouldn't be asking that question at all. It's the purity of sport. That jeopardy and wave of emotion is what makes us all tune in. It's why professional sport and elite level football keeps us coming back for more.

I've discussed a lot on the #StreamTimeSports Pod and at events the significant shift in Amazon's approach, evolving from being primarily a buyer of premium sports media rights to becoming more of a distribution platform and partner. The recent NBA deal in the US is an exception rather than the norm, similar to their Champions League agreement and a few other European deals. Overall, Amazon, like many big tech companies, is positioning itself as a hub for entertainment rather than a straightforward content buyer. While this strategy might seem like a no-brainer and the announcements may generate excitement in the industry, closing deals is just half the battle. Managing the customer journey for Prime subscribers to spend further on new premium services is complex. This is where another big tech players offering in YouTube’s Primetime channels stands out, as its seamless sign-up process works across all platforms, not just within YouTube itself. Many see the move toward big tech becoming aggregators as the change that had to happen, potentially easing the fragmentation that's plagued the industry. However, the ability of these platforms to drive significant supplementary subscriptions remains largely unproven. DAZN's acquisition of Ligue 1 domestic rights has elicited mixed reactions from fans and consumers in France, as highlighted by a recent survey conducted by ODOXA: 1. #Piracy Concerns: 2.5 million French people, approximately 5% of the population, admit to watching football illegally. 2. Younger Demographics: Among those under 35, the rate of illegal streaming jumps to 11%. 3. Price Sensitivity: DAZN’s subscription price of €30 is close to the €23 that fans indicated they were willing to pay. 4. Increased Piracy Fears: 65% of respondents believe that DAZN acquiring the rights will lead to a rise in piracy. 5. Free-to-Air Viewership: 27% of football viewers watch only when it's available on free-to-air channels. 6. Viewing Habits: 52% of respondents don't watch football at home. 7. Multiple Subscriptions: 6% of viewers use multiple pay-TV services, compared to 12% who subscribe to just one. 8. Diminishing Interest: 54% of respondents said their interest in Ligue 1 will decrease due to the rights change. 9. Tender Process Criticism: 69% of respondents believe that the LFP mishandled the tender process. Why is this happening? In my opinion, the pushback stems from DAZN being a relatively new player in the French market, where they still need to build trust and credibility with consumers. People generally resist change, and this acquisition represents a significant shift. What’s Next? Both DAZN and the LFP have exit clauses throughout the course of the agreement, which adds an element of uncertainty. However, it’s in everyone’s best interest for this partnership to succeed. DAZN faces the challenge of gaining a critical mass of subscribers to justify the investment, but their success in similar markets like Italy and Germany suggests they have the potential to make this work long-term. DAZN’s patience in securing a price they deemed suitable could ultimately lead to a significant win for the streaming platform. With the expected passing of a Football Governance Bill and the establishment of an independent football regulator under this Parliament, the situation at Chelsea Football Club (added to the Manchester City Football Club saga) is an existential challenge to The Premier League's credibility to manage its own house in a fair and transparent manner. Selling a Women's team & Hotels to other entities in a Club's corporate ecosystem to increase revenues and profits, seems to me nothing more than a good old-fashioned transfer costing/pricing exercise. If it's legal under the current rules (even at fair market prices), it shouldn't be. It would be an absurdity and grossly unfair, in the light of Nottingham Forest and Everton Football Club being deducted points last season, if bigger clubs get away with what are probably worse financial transgressions due to the fact they have better and more expensive accountants and lawyers. #EPL #FFP #FootballGovernance #SportsEconomics SportsPro BBC Sky Department for Culture, Media and Sport

No one watches linear TV anymore.... 24m watching the UEFA Euros 2024 final last night between Spain & England, say otherwise! This is why broadcasters and rights holders need to take educated risks to move the needle with visual innovation and immersive audience experiences around these tentpole live sport events - always! Evolving TV and capturing those casual audiences in the process that think linear TV doesn't cater for them. England sadly lost, but broadcasters should be taking educated commercial and creative risks around this live sporting content EVERY TIME to win audiences longer term. Think additional wow water cooler moments using virtual production, AI and fan engagement around the live content. Last night there were not ANY creative visual risks around the live programming. We all felt women’s football was elevated by the Lionesses winning Euro 2022 - and now we have it in numbers. Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance says WSL club revenues were up 50% in 2022/23, with total league attendances over one million for first time. And it’s the big four of Arsenal F.C, Chelsea Football Club, Manchester City Football Club and Manchester United driving most of that growth with disproportionate investment - generating 66% of all cumulative league revenues, while their wage bills also accounted for 57% of league wage costs. Glasgow has put forward a proposal for hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games at a significantly low cost, as confirmed by Commonwealth Games Scotland, in a recent announcement. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🔹 The proposed Games could be organised in two years with a budget of £130-150 million and minimal reliance on public funds. The financing would primarily come from a £100 million contribution from the Commonwealth Games Federation, and the remainder (£30-50 million) would be sourced from ticket sales 🎟 , broadcasting rights 📺 and sponsorships 💼. The projections suggest that the Games could generate a revenue of £100-200 million. 💷 🔹 The proposed timeline is an 11-day sporting event to be held in July/August 2026, featuring approximately 10 core sports. 🏅 🔹 Glasgow hosted the 2014 Games, which included 17 sports.
