Elizabeth Young from Par Equity Siobhan Pycroft from Seneca Partners Limited Mo Aldalou from Baltic Ventures Each investor pitched their investment fund, they way they work and rolled in some super important advice for founders - 1. - Keep the narrative simple Siobhan explained the importance of the simplicity of your message when presenting to VCs. If we don't understand what you do after flicking through the deck - you're not getting to the next phase. Sounds obvious doesn't it! but this is often an area where founders fall down. What do you do, how do you make money, how are you going to grow and what do you need investment for. Keep. It. simple. - 2. - Learn about the VC decision making process All the presenters gave an incredibly useful peek under the bonnet on their decision making process. Lizzie explained the importance of early partner visibility at Par Equity and the need for clear well structured data rooms. Siobhan talked through the make-up of her IC and Mo gave an insightful review of the Baltic Ventures multi-step process. Always ask investors about their process so you can manage and optimise the process from your side - 3. - It's a relationship game - be nice! An equity investment is a long-term relationship. Total raised this year so far is: £9.069 billion. Last year, it was £9.749 billion. 2021 was the mega year with £21.292 billion. Would 2025 be the turnaround year? With Syria falling and the conflicts accelerate, no one can predict the future. One thing is sure though. There would be more investment going into DefenceTech as alluded by Steve Blank - Steve is calling for private sector to get involved. I prefer no wars altogether but humans are complex beings who cannot live in harmony. Let's take a quick look at some of the companies who announced investment rounds last week: - Wexler raised £1.1 million Pre-Seed round led by Myriad Venture Partners. I totally agree with Tom Blomfield the founder of Monzo Bank. Most founders I know develop a very clear view of the world and how things should work. They are contrarian, and they will not agree with you just so you’d like them. The best founders are truthseekers, and also truthtellers. Being kind also is not being polite, it is to tell you the truth and try to fix things that are broken. Positive news to see the UK tech sector surpassing China to become the second-largest global ecosystem in funding. This impressive achievement highlights how innovative the UK has become, fuelled by substantial investments and a newly energised post-covid start-up culture. The article in Fortune notes that the UK's tech scene secured $45.2 billion in 2023, surpassing China and demonstrating the country's growing influence in the global market. One key takeaway for me is the diverse range of industries benefiting from this boom, including fintech, health tech, and (of course) AI. The ISO 20022 deadline for CHAPS has moved from Nov 24 to May 25... or has it?   It’s worth noting that Bank of England have made it very clear that they will not move the deadline beyond this point!  The Bank of England will expect banks, and their customers to work towards the deadline as if it was still the end of November. The May deadline is just a buffer for those businesses who aren’t ready. In the latest episode of our “Mastering ISO 20022” series, I discuss the updated deadline, and specifically the fact that even this extended timeline still requires banks and corporates to move quickly to prepare.

For many, the UK job market seems bleak. According to the ONS, we've had 2 years of negative job growth since April 2022, a decline which has been even longer than the financial crisis of 2008. However, one area which remains in high demand is infrastructure; this is a sector which we've recently expanded to at Gigstart, working on projects in clean energy and transportation. Supply of talent is low because you have to hire highly skilled people near sites (often in remote locations). Additionally, as the workforce in this sector is growing older, younger generations have been less inclined towards these roles, favouring digital and corporate careers instead. However, with Gen Z slowly but increasingly entering the trades, this looks like it may change. I call this phenomenon the talent shift from digital to physical. Will Gen Z be willing to work these roles as demand continues to rise? I wrote an article about it below. Before you talk the UK down… If you build a tech business here, you benefit from: 1) Generous S/EIS tax breaks that encourage investors to back your business. 2) R&D tax credits to reduce your tax bill or claim cash credits as a proportion of their R&D expenditure. 3) The Patent Box tax regime that allows you to apply a lower rate of Corporation Tax (10%) if you hold a patent. 4) Government startup loans that are typically low interest and with free mentoring. 5) Innovate UK Grants for funding and support for science and technology innovations. 6) Capital Allowances that allow businesses to write off the cost of certain capital assets against taxable income. And In 2023, we solidified our position as Europe's leading tech ecosystem, attracting nearly $22 billion in Venture Capital, more than France and Germany combined. Of course, starting a business is so tough and there’s a lot more that the government could be doing, but I feel really passionately about the UK startup/ tech business ecosystem. There’s so much doom and gloom out there, that is exhausting to listen to ! I’m no expert in running a country, but it’s clear that the last government’s approach did SMEs no favours. And this government doesn't seem to be doing much to change that. Increasing employer NI and cornering accidental landlords with tighter regulations doesn’t seem like the most effective way to support economic growth—especially in the rental market. There must be better ways to generate tax revenue. For instance, focusing on large corporations that leverage sophisticated accounting practices to minimise their tax burden could offer a more balanced approach. Hitting SMEs, which create jobs and drive innovation, with even more taxes seems counterproductive. These businesses are already facing tough times. Why put additional pressure on those who are keeping the economy ticking over, especially when we need entrepreneurship more than ever? At times, it feels like working for a large corporation might be less stressful, with fewer burdens to shoulder. But for those of us who've been running businesses for nearly 19 years, it’s more than just a job—it’s a passion, a commitment to something bigger. However, it does make you wonder whether the increasing hurdles—like rising Capital Gains Tax—will discourage future entrepreneurs. Shouldn't we be fostering startups and encouraging new businesses? After all, they’ll be the backbone of our economy over the next 15-20 years. Let’s support growth, not stifle it. After all, we need incentives for people to take risks and build the businesses of tomorrow - not totally f*ck them over!!! But what do I know...

UK is growing again 🇬🇧 In 2024, investments in UK startups increased by 16%, reaching £7.4bn ➛ UK remains the top destination for tech investment in Europe, making up about a third of all European VC funding this year. ➛ after two years of decline, confidence in British businesses is coming back. ➛ UK tech companies raised more money than those in France and Germany combined, and five times more than in Switzerland. ➛ big funding rounds include Wayve’s £840m Series C and Monzo’s £340m late-stage investment. ➛ British Business Bank reports that the UK is now the third largest VC market in the world, surpassing India. ➛ despite challenges, investments are stabilizing at over £2bn per quarter for smaller businesses. ➛ UK has also overtaken China to become the second-highest funded tech ecosystem globally, just behind the US.
