What is Relational Facilitation? It's a question I've been exploring for years - first intuitively in my own practice, then more intentionally as others began asking about my approach to group leadership. The journey from facilitator to mentor wasn't straightforward; when a participant first asked me to teach them my approach, those familiar "Who am I to do this?" gremlins showed up loud and clear. Despite 15+ years of teaching and facilitation experience, I questioned: Was I experienced enough? Did I have enough to offer? Could I really mentor others effectively? What I've discovered through embracing these questions is that they're actually part of what makes relational facilitation powerful - it's not about having all the answers or being the expert. It's about creating spaces where authentic connection becomes the catalyst for learning and growth. At its heart, relational facilitation is characterised by: • Deep listening that goes beyond hearing words to understanding what's alive in the room. This includes listening to body language, energy shifts, and the subtle dynamics that shape group experiences. • Trauma-aware practices that create genuine psychological safety - not as an add-on but as a fundamental foundation for transformative group work. • The ability to hold both structure and spontaneity, responding to what emerges while maintaining focus. This means having a clear plan AND being willing to dance with what's actually happening. • Trust in the group's wisdom rather than positioning the facilitator as the expert. When we create space for everyone's voice, remarkable insights emerge. What makes it powerful is how it transforms both the facilitator and the participants. When people feel truly safe to be authentic and vulnerable: • Learning deepens naturally through genuine connection • Wisdom emerges from unexpected places and perspectives • Connections form that outlast the session • People discover their own capacity for leadership • The pressure to be "perfect" dissolves into genuine presence • Groups develop their own capacity for holding space My own journey as a facilitator has taught me that I don't need to have everything figured out. I do, however, need to be comfortable in my dignity and humility to hold the balance of movement and stillness with groups. That’s where the magic seems to happen. As a relatively recent convert to the world of 'professional facilitation', I would also love to hear more individual origin stories. I'm fascinated to learn how people find their way into this world and know that there is so much I could learn from others' formative experiences - warts and all! #facilitation

Some fascinating insights here into learning effectiveness with different formats of learning. Videos with quizzes have been shown to be one of the least effective. I disagree with Dr Hardmans theory that AI will improve learning. So far most of the AI I have seen works straight off content and offers very little personalisation. The only exception i have seen is AI that can answer questions based on stored knowledge. In fact, I think this shows that well thought out problem or gap analysis and good learning design make all the difference. I hope organisations pay attention. #instructionaldesign

✍ Weeknote: 10th - 17th May 2024 Experimenting with public weeknotes again for the first time in a few years... 🌀 Facilitation/ Consulting - Conversation with Anna-Marie Swan and Anton Chernikov about the design of a Self as Ecology session Anna-Marie and I are facilitating at Selgars' Enchanted festival in July (more on that next week, link in comments) - A day spent at a potential venue for an Autumn gathering in North Devon, taking videos, walking the land, building a relationship with the owners - A chat with a client about some support required for their organisation over the next 6 weeks as they grapple with some fairly existential questions (a mix of facilitation, coaching, witnessing and sounding board) *I have facilitation/ consulting capacity at the moment, get in touch if you'd like to explore working together* 🌿 Coaching - 2x chemistry calls and 1x client session - 1x supervision session, mind-expanding. What am I transmitting to the world and potential clients? What are clients coming to me with? Working with spirit and identity. How might I further develop the capabilities of skillful interruptions and inner listening? I'm so, so grateful for this supervision space, I'd be a lesser coach without it. ✍ Writing - I went to Blog Club (the writing accountability group I founded, link below) for the first time in months. Energy still recovering, though - I'm back to Exeter after a month away. It feels like coming home, which is a shock; it didn't feel like home when I left a month ago - My Dad dug my grandmother's books out of the attic and it was an absolute treasure trove, mostly of late 70s/ early 80s gardening books. Sustainability professionals tell us all the time that the missing piece in progress is the will do make change, and that while organisations take a lot of comfort in measuring tangible, practical things as part of their climate targets, gauging and leveraging 'belief' feel so nebulous. It can be tempting (particularly on a tough day) to retreat into the numbers and block out the fact that most of the company aren't on board, but it is possible to learn how to develop belief in other people. 🙉 It starts with great listening and questioning, which themselves start with slowing down a little, but it's more than that. It's the ability to listen and ask great questions without being tightly attached ourselves. The real skill isn't what you say, it's what you don't. 🙊 Creating space can feel hard when we want progress now, now, now (and we need it that fast, let's be honest). But it's also not the case that you have to gooooo slooooow 🐌 for hours on end. A coaching conversation can take mere minutes to achieve more clarity and motivation for someone than an hour of talking at a more surface level. And everyone can learn coaching skills. 🙌🏻 If your job was simply to build belief, what might that change about the way you held conversations? 👩🏻‍🏫 ⏱️ Why not try it in your next meeting today?

From a 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜, 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 image to something 𝐅𝐀𝐒𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 So I did an experiment. I had an inspired idea about the work I have been doing with clients using Human Design... The idea was to introduce my fabulous colleague Sarah Evans to Human Design (𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘥𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵) Then I had another thought... ...𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘥𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘥𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘵? What does "regenerative organisational design" mean to you? I've just updated my regenerative organisational design primer (link in comments below) with a new working definition and some new resources: "Organisational design is a jumble of disciplines and capabilities, which, depending on who you talk to, includes some of the following: organisational development, learning and development, systems design, user-centred design, agile working, digital transformation, culture design, community management, internal comms, organisational psychology, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice, leadership and team coaching, HR, and Operations. I believe that “regenerative organisational design” puts life and liberation at the centre of organisational change efforts: - Creating the conditions for organisational health and enticing life-giving patterns to emerge - Fostering communities that can repair and self-heal - Developing entities that are able to end with grace, improving the health of their ecosystems."
