How do we leverage data at scale to maximize value from UKCS existing well stock? Exciting times ahead as we delve into the challenges and opportunities presented by the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) well stock. The North Sea Transition Authority latest Wells Insight Report reveals a critical juncture for the industry, with intervention rates on a decline (15%) and a ~third of wells shut-in/temporarily P&A, meaning many reserves are at risk to be left stranded.   Joining us at the #SLB Performance Centre for a pivotal Technical Talk on this pressing issue are several industry leaders. If our next UK government stops any new licences and new exploration, together with the availability of miscible CO2 solvent, it is now time to assess and identify improved oil recovery (IOR)/enhanced oil recovery (EOR) activity or technology with potential to maximise economic recovery of UK’s existing licences.

Tick marks were used by geologists during checkshots surveys for identifying the depths where to stop the WST (Well Seismic Tool) before detonating dynamite charges. Checkshots travel times and depths were used to establish a time-depth relationship for seismic interpretation.

Navigating the Ups and Downs of the Oil and Gas Industry: Back in the heyday of oil and gas in the North Sea, when companies were drilling numerous wells, I held a specialist role in data-driven well engineering and analytics. Clients frequently stopped by my desk for answers to their complex questions, and I took great pride in my expertise. However, we soon realized the vulnerability of having all our eggs in one basket when the industry faced tough times. Many of my colleagues, despite their superior skills, were made redundant. I was fortunate to retain my position due to ongoing projects I was managing. On another occasion, in a team of ten, I was at the top of the redundancy list due to my higher salary. Luck was on my side again when a colleague went on long-term maternity leave, sparing me from redundancy. During the prosperous years (up-cycles), many of us, myself included, became complacent, believing our specialized skills made us indispensable. However, in our industry, timing can be everything. When crunch time comes, It’s not just about what you know, but how transferable your skills are to other sectors so when you get tossed out there is a place to go. I want to emphasize that we work for businesses that can deem us disposable at any moment. I recall requesting diversified training from my supervisor, only to be told I was too expensive to replace even for a short period. Another time, I was advised to lay low due to impending redundancies. It was quite a surprise that most of my supervisors/managers were made redundant themselves. They did not allow space for training for others under them, whether due to excuses or real reasons. Inadvertently, they caused damage to numerous professionals by not seeking to train them properly in disciplines that could have been their next role. I remember my supervisor was tasked with making six or so people redundant and had the painful task of holding 1-1 meetings and consoling them. Once this was all done, the supervisor himself was made redundant the next week. Through this post, I urge my peers in the oil and gas industry to continuously learn and take control of their career paths while you still can. Staying relevant with current trends is crucial. A Drop in the Ocean: OGDCL's Big Oil Boast 🤣 😂 😅 🤣 😂 😅 OGDCL's announcement of increasing production from Kunar Well No. 11 to 960 barrels per day, saving $3.2 million in foreign reserves, is insignificant given Pakistan's daily import of 450,000 barrels of oil and 1,000 MMscf of LNG. This minimal increase barely impacts the $17.5 billion annual import bill, offering no real relief to the country's soaring energy demands. 🤣 😂 😅 🤣 😂 😅 Pakistan's energy sector, encompassing oil and gas (E&P), electricity, coal, and minerals, is in a dire state due to rampant corruption, inadequate planning, poor governance, and misguided policies. The policymakers and leading professionals in this sector have demonstrated a severe lack of competence, vision, and skills, resulting in one disastrous decision after another. 😭 😡 😱 😰 😢 😤 The sector's incompetence is further underscored by Pakistan's escalating energy import bills, which reached $17.5 billion in 2023 and are projected to soar to $31 billion by 2031 and $60 billion by 2048. With only 8 years of oil reserves and 11 years of gas reserves left, the country's energy outlook is bleak. The rapid decline in domestic gas production, dropping by 7% annually, exacerbates this grim scenario. 😭 😡 😱 😰 😢 😤 For the fiscal year 10MFY24, Pakistan’s total imports stood at $43.353 billion against exports of $25.669 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of $17.684 billion. UEP’s latest gas discovery, producing a mere 2.5 MMscfd at the Sonhal-1 well, feels more like a drop in a bucket rather than a "pivotal moment" in Pakistan’s energy crisis. With the country consuming over 4000 MMscfd daily and facing a shortfall of 1000 MMscfd, this tiny contribution barely scratches the surface of the problem. Instead of addressing the massive shortfall, it seems like UEP’s management is more focused on celebrating and pocketing bonuses for this underwhelming discovery. SEEMINGLY IMPOSSIBLE DILEMMA Recently I attended the 3rd Energy Group CCS Symposium organized by The Geological Society in London and the Carbon Storage MMV Technology Showcase in Aberdeen led by NSTA. A large part of the brain trust in the CCS industry was gathered here. Great talks and I learned a lot.    I’d like to sum my learnings with these bird’s-eye-views:  -Going forward we should not be too extravagant, always using the most expensive solutions, when dealing with waste disposal, paid for by the taxpayers, you and me.   -Still, we need to use good quality data that ensures that the big collective investment is yielding what is promised, trusted by you and me.    We discussed this seemingly impossible dilemma: Good offshore geophysical measurements for a low cost. My contribution here was to urge for collaboration among the carbon storage stakeholders: When 18 CCS blocks are side-by-side and many utilize common storage targets, the Bunter and Rotliegende sandstones in the Southern North Sea, then going for the same and proven 4D technology should be possible.    The picture attached here is an illustration of the benefits of Multi Client 3D #seismic acquisition.  Instead of many separate #3D contracts including 5–7-day mobilization per contract, you can save more than 50% of cost and #carbon emission by doing them all in one go. The smaller the required 4D coverage areas are, like for CCS, the more you save. Obviously, the scope-2 carbon emissions for #CCS stakeholders should be weighed high besides the cost-efficiency.     For CCS in depleted fields, seismic might not be the best option. If not seismic, then these collaborations should also apply to any other marine operation. What do you think?    Bent Kjølhamar, @TGS
