Thoughtful words from David Edwards on the role of teachers in the era of AI. I heard David speak at the Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize several years ago and even there (pre AI) he summed up the main point. Paraphrasing ... if you believe that education is just the transfer of content knowledge then yes tech will replace the teacher. But if you consider the teacher as the pedagogical, SEL, youth development, growth and development expert then no tech cant do that. Id also add to this discussion that the role of leaders during the AI era is also key. How do they adjust/lead during this new disruptor to our systems?

An interesting read from 2021 but more relevant than ever, DfE in their own business case modelling found that outcomes in FE in terms of higher earnings premium 3-5 years post qual: Level 2 Qual - 9% Level 3 Qual - 16% Level 2 Apprenticeship - 12% Level 4/5 Apprenticeship - 22% The outcome for the Gov't is a lifetime of additional earnings and tax receipts for HMT, the skills gap gets smaller, and the economy ultimately benefits. These are averages, here in the North East I suspect the %'s are far higher. Roll on the Labour spending review... 🤞

Professor Craig Mahoney & Dr Helena Lim BSc (Hons) MSc (Dist), PhD, PFHEA rethink the value of #highered. “Surely, we can develop a fairer, better, more appropriate way of funding one of our greatest national assets, UK Higher Education. Get a grip guys!” They suggest interest on student loans should be excused for the greater good. Whilst we agree with this in principle, we question if this burden should fall on the taxpayer? Plus while we agree to some extent “universities are not only about economic benefits & #jobcreation, research & graduate qualifications are worthy for their own benefit,” it is only through aligning #tertiaryeducation more closely with the workforce universities will not only reinvigorate their “social licence,” but also future proof their funding. See our article in Wonkhe “Students cost or assets?” in comments. “We are being told that the #university sector is in crisis; that #universities are not producing employment-ready graduates, that low-ranking universities offer mickey mouse degrees or rip off #degrees. Yet, UK #highereducation is one of the most successful & positive industries across our diverse land. If we continue to run it down, criticise its existence, badger its leaders, it will indeed fulfil the prophecy of becoming ordinary, not world leading. But I accept that it's not all milk & honey. The fact that the Office for Students (#OfS) have indicated that some 25% of #English universities are in financial peril, is a cause for concern. But how did that happen? Well, I would speculate that a combination of factors such as reduction in the real value of home student fees (static since 2018 at £9,250 per year in #England), changes in government policy impacting #internationalstudents during their time limited stay in the UK, insufficient horizon scanning by institutional leadership teams & failures of governance where inadequate scrutiny has taken place… In conclusion, the narrative of a 'crisis' in UK higher education is overly simplistic & damaging. While challenges undoubtedly exist, we must not lose sight of the immense value our universities provide – not only in economic terms, but also in their contribution to knowledge, culture, & informed citizenship. The current funding model, with its reliance on high-interest loans, is unsustainable & places an unfair burden on #graduates. It's time for a serious rethink. We need a system that champions accessibility, supports our world - leading institutions, & ensures that future generations can continue to benefit from the transformative power of university #education. Good news for Universities UK & the sector as a whole for less than £10,000 per #university all universities now can have access to robust, representative & benchmarked international #graduateoutcomes data. Subscribe : https://lnkd.in/e5c_CSE4 “The problem is that there is “a bit of a data desert when it comes to robust data on the outcomes of those on the #GraduateRoute,” & non-EU outcomes in general.” Far from it in fact Non-EU #graduateoutcomes data has been available to #uuk & the entire UK sector from Asia Careers Group SDN BHD since HESA: Higher Education Statistics Agency stopped actively collecting it in 2019. This decision was made on a purely cost & ease of collection basis & in fact with a more #innovative #technology enabled data collected methodology, ACG has been successfully collecting this data in a cost effective manner for 5+ years. If this article had support from the sector as a whole let’s not delay for a collective investment of less than £1million the entire UK sector can have access to robust, representative, graduate outcomes data with an initial report delivered in time for Xmas! “The argument is that international #highereducation policy has become reduced to questions of international #studentrecruitment numbers, & #visa regimes, rather than a more holistic assessment of the benefits to the UK that accrue from the breadth of #universities’ international engagement, & the synergies between the various international engagement activities. Within that argument, though, is an astute acknowledgement that it is in the interests of both government & the #highereducation sector to take the political heat out of international #recruitment, underpinned by a proposal for a new compact “to ensure stable and sustainable growth in international student numbers”… For the UK to remain competitive as a destination for international students, its universities need to stay focused on supporting international students to achieve what they want from their UK study experience. For many applicants, that means employability and/or employment. As colleagues meet at #IHEF2024 this week, it is time for those working in UK universities to #lobby those that represent them. It is critical to impress upon #highereducation sector bodies, the importance of immediately “investing in international futures!” Robust, representative Non-EU #graduateoutcomes & destinations data is immediately available from Asia Careers Group SDN BHD to all UK universities [& has been since 2019,] the only barrier is the reluctance of those that represent the UK #highered sector to act in their members best interests. With many UK Higher #Education Institutions facing significant cost cutting & mass redundancies, we should all question how we got here? With record numbers of #internationalstudents & the UK emerging from the #pandemic relatively unscathed, those working in #internationaleducation are right to ask those acting in their interests “what went wrong?” Since 2019 the warning signs have been there in black & white, the fate of the UK #highered sector has been foretold numerous times, in the #highereducation press & beyond. (See comments) If the sector wish to change the narrative they must all lobby those that represent them, at #IHEF & other public forums to impress upon them, that an annual collective investment by sector bodies of just £350,000 in Non-EU graduate outcomes data would in many ways protect & #future proof a sector worth over £40 billion to the UK economy. This will be critical if Vivienne Stern, CEO of Universities UK, is correct when she says there is “a very high risk of a manifesto from The Conservative Party that includes a commitment to removing the graduate route”. The Labour Party likely to follow suit, in a fight to win the #redwall. Investing in Non-EU Graduate Outcomes is a way to immediately influence MAC & provide all UK universities a Plan B to increase international #studentrecruitment & support their existing #internationalstudents transition successfully to the workforce back in their home countries. If the sector evidence now that inbound international student #recruitment is largely #immigration neutral, with by far the majority of #internationalstudents returning to their home countries & into successful #careers following their studies. MAC reports in the May, so if the sector commission Non EU #graduateoutcomes data now, they have a chance of submitting their findings before MAC reports, universities would have a Plan B & #psw could receive a stay of execution? “There are fears the Conservatives might pledge to scrap the UK’s graduate visa route in their election manifesto, putting pressure on Labour, if a review of the #graduateroute does not first lead to its abolition.” Asia Careers Group SDN BHD - Investing in International Futures AGCAS British Council BUILA Higher Education Policy Institute Jisc Office for Students UCAS UKCISA Universities UK International

If Keir Starmer’s focus in on increasing #skills at home & UK #softpower overseas, to drive overseas inward investment into the UK, & #universities are serious about driving change & working with government not against it particularly with reference to #immigration, they must pivot to supporting our “brave” international students get great #jobs back in their home countries. For universities looking to embrace this change there is time to qualify for the early bird rate for International #Employability Insight - where we will provide you with Non-EU #graduateoutcomes & destinations data with compared with Australia, the insight may surprise you hit “Subscribe to newsletter.” “The funding crisis facing many #British universities moved from the ‘trade’ #media to the front pages of the national press as sector stakeholders stepped up their campaign to win either a rise in domestic #tuition fees or a bailout from the new Labour government. The influential Sunday Times led with a front-page headline warning: “#Universities face cash ‘catastrophe’ with threat of mergers & course cuts” on 21 July & claimed “three leading institutions are understood to be in serious peril” & ministers are being urged to introduce an emergency rescue package to prevent bankruptcies. The sudden change in mood music towards the plight of #highereducation chimed with the latest release of data from the UK’s Universities and Colleges Admissions Service UCAS which showed that the numbers of home & international applications to start #undergraduate courses this autumn are both down this year. Despite a rising population of 18-year-olds in the UK, there was a 1.6% decline in domestic applications reported by #UCAS at the end of June and a 2% drop in #internationalstudent applications. The fall in international applicants is perhaps more worrying, at least for #university finance directors, as overseas students pay much higher #tuition fees, often double & sometimes triple the amount home students pay. Dr Janet B.
