The borehole is designed to explore strata associated with one of the UK’s largest geological fault zones – the so-called Ninety Fathom-Stublick Fault Zone – the well was sunk by Geometric Cofor with technical assistance from local mine workings specialists Drilcorp to a depth of 1820m, the deepest in the UK. Following some technical problems a workover rig was brought onto the site during August 2012 when downhole temperature was recorded at 73.3 degrees during loging by EGS ltd. The project is currently undergoing a technical feasibility review prior to fund raising for the deployment phase.
I was responsible for the operational management, administration and some of the fund raising for the project, working closely in support of Professor Paul Younger.
The project was the foundation for the NetZero GeoRDIE – Net Zero Geothermal Research for District Infrastructure Engineering” project.
