They highlight the dangers of the growing belief in 'overshoot', i.e. that the world can continue burning fossil fuels at current or even increased rates for some time, in the hope or belief that some combination of large-scale and mostly still unproven atmospheric carbon-reduction technologies like carbon capture and storage, bio energy carbon capture and storage, and direct air capture, will in future be able to withdraw and sequestrate sufficience carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to bring us back within safe limits. We are already at or even beyond 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, with global emisssions rising each year, and extreme events and associated hazards and disasters worldwide illustrating the unsustainability of our current path ...

New research from the The University of Sheffield has revealed that, in most cases, replacing #plastics with #alternativematerials can actually lead to higher #greenhousegas emissions. Findings from the study have revealed that in 15 out of the 16 applications examined, plastic products actually result in lower #GHG emissions compared to their alternatives. The reduction in emissions spans from 10 percent to as high as 90 percent across the product life cycle. The findings were quite surprising - while plastics do have their own environmental challenges, the alternatives often have a larger carbon footprint due to energy-intensive manufacturing processes. This highlights the importance of looking at the full #lifecycle impact when considering material substitutions. Simply switching to 'greener' materials is not always the best environmental solution. Reducing overall #consumption, improving #recycling and waste management, and #innovating sustainable plastic alternatives may be more effective paths forward. As with most complex environmental issues, there are no easy answers - but this research provides valuable insights to guide more impactful decision-making. 💥 PhD Studentships available at University of Warwick's School of Engineering 💥 https://lnkd.in/dvf8ZAm4 Below are the details of two #PhD #studentships with full funding of fees and stipend available to UK/home students (or part funding for non-UK students). Warwick, Cambridge, and Bristol Universities are the UK's foremost research centres for researching, developing, and utilising #SiC, #GaN, and #Ga2O3 power devices. Together, the three Universities won £11.7m of funding from UK research councils EPSRC and Innovate UK to create the REWIRE-IKC "Innovation and Knowledge Centre (IKC)". Co-funded for 5 years (from Apr 2024) with support from over 25 industrial partners, the REWIRE-IKC is intended to unite the capabilities and resources of the three Universities to help commercialise UK-based WBG devices. Across the centre, projects will develop demonstrators, run new fabrication processes and gather data with and for our industrial partners. This Warwick-based PhD studentship is available to work on SiC-related projects within REWIRE, beginning April 2025, October 2025 or January 2026. The PhD topics could include any aspect of SiC power device fabrication, TCAD simulation, or device reliability for power devices rated from 1200-15,000 V. Depending on the applicant and the topic is undertaken, efforts will be made to obtain a co-sponsor from the cohort of REWIRE industrial partners

Our Babraham Research Campus Impact Report 2023/24 provides insights into the effectiveness of our pre-seed programme for early-stage life science ventures - Accelerate@Babraham. Of course, we've been told how valuable the package of support is to those selected, but being able to quantify the impact really brings home the difference it makes. 🌟Since its inception in 2018 the programme has nurtured 26 companies which together have raised £72.5m in funding and have a collective market value of £139m. 📈Employing 117 people collectively, these start-ups have achieved a 1.9x return on investment while speeding up their fundraising timelines by 12 months compared to peers outside the programme. These exceptional findings are testament to the valuable input from our Accelerate partners and supporters and all involved should be very proud indeed. How many alumni of The University of Manchester have successfully grown their biotech's stock by almost 400% on the year-to-date, nearly 2x'ing Nvidia's growth? 📈 I had the pleasure of speaking to Sarah Boyce, CEO of Avidity Biosciences, Inc., ahead of the release of Vital Signs which is produced by Onyx and publishing in Fortune magazine on December 1. Avidity has achieved successful data readouts for all three of its rare muscle disease programs in Phase 1/2 clinical trials, initiated its first Phase 3 trial, and raised over $1.1 billion this year 💸👩‍🔬. University of Southampton scientists have stored the full human genome on a 5D memory crystal—a revolutionary data storage format that can survive for billions of years. Unlike other data storage formats that degrade over time, 5D memory crystals can store up to 360 terabytes of information (in the largest size) without loss for billions of years, even at high temperatures. UCL-supported startup GutSee has joined the Zinc VC Programme! Co-founded by UCL alumna Dr Joanna Wiecek, GutSee is using cutting-edge molecular biology and artificial intelligence (AI) to transform the treatment of gut disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The Zinc VC programme is aimed at exceptional founders solving challenges in the health of people and the planet. GutSee has also received £150,000 in investment from Zinc. The startup is currently based at the Hatchery startup incubator programme at BaseKX, UCL’s dedicated entrepreneurship hub, run by UCL Innovation & Enterprise. Announcing our investment in a company that really knows how to break it down! 🕺 University of Cambridge spin-out Evoralis is developing novel commercially-viable enzymes that can break down previously unrecyclable plastics like polyester (PET), nylon (PA) or polyurethane (PUR). Evoralis are initially focusing on the textile industry where their biocatalysts could enable over 80% of all textiles to become recyclable within the next two years, working towards a truly circular economy. Alongside the investment from CPI Enterprises, CPI will work with the team at Evoralis to support the development and scale-up of their novel process. Particularly exciting as this investment represents one of the first out of Innovate UK’s new pilot scheme that enables the UK Catapult Network and it’s associated centres to support innovative SMEs with disruptive technology in the early stages of their investment journey, alongside wraparound technical development support.
