SmartCo Consulting had an insightful day at techUK this week, catching up with peers from across the digital health community. Here are our top three takeaways from the day: Public-Private Partnerships: techUK continues to excel in fostering collaboration between the NHS and the digital health marketplace, all aligned with a shared mission to improve services for patients and staff through digital transformation and technologies. The conversations helped shape meaningful ideas that move us all forward. Frontline Digitisation: Progress is good, but we are not done yet and eyes are moving firmly to optimisation and how to maximise the real value for the frontline from these digital investments. One Digital Estate: The future is exciting because of the continued focus on building the digital foundations to enable healthcare transformation. Central support on areas like moving to the cloud is welcomed and coming soon. And a cheeky 4th point 👀… convergence. Whether in purchasing, design, planning, the application layer (EPR included), processes, or infrastructure, convergence of digital platforms across local healthcare systems is gaining momentum. It is unavoidable and will help in so many ways, as we standardise and do more for less.   While George Jackson and Tom Frederick snapped the trusty 'speaker-on-stage' pics, we thought we'd change it up a bit. This initiative builds on the success of the GM Care Record, offering better-informed care and treatment for people with conditions like dementia and heart failure. ✨ Best use of digital for Social Care ✨ Partners: NHS Greater Manchester Bury Integrated Delivery Collaborative & Safe Steps In collaboration with the Bury Integrated Delivery Collaborative, primary care, care homes, the local authority, and SafeSteps, a digital initiative, aimed at improving early intervention for deterioration and falls prevention in Bury care homes, was launched in 2023. The successful deployment of a digital deterioration tracker (RESTORE2 and RESTORE2 Mini) alongside a multifactorial falls prevention tool resulted in a 20% reduction in ambulance callouts across 37 care homes in Greater Manchester in January and March 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. Doccla Secures £35m Series B to Revolutionize Virtual Healthcare London-based health tech startup Doccla has raised £35m in a Series B funding round led by Lakestar. Founded in 2019 by Martin Ratz after a personal health experience, Doccla offers constant virtual monitoring for patients, allowing medical staff to track real-time updates on their conditions. Initially launched in Sweden, Doccla expanded to the UK in 2020, with a pilot ward during the Covid-19 pandemic. The company now partners with the NHS and international healthcare providers, delivering tech-enabled virtual wards that enhance patient recovery at home while freeing up hospital resources. Ratz expressed excitement about scaling operations across Europe and expanding into the Life Sciences sector. 🤝 ABHI Partners with Imperial to Present a Transformative Plan for HealthTech Growth 🚀 HealthTech holds immense promise, yet its full potential in the UK remains largely untapped. With strategic stimulus and support, our sector can drive significant economic growth while enhancing healthcare delivery across the NHS. Earlier this year, we were privileged to collaborate with Lord Sainsbury’s Gatsby Charitable Foundation on a transformative initiative. Partnering with Imperial College London, via their Centre for Sectoral Economic Performance at Imperial College London, we explored bold policies aimed at unlocking HealthTech as a key engine for UK economic expansion. This work culminated in the launch of a comprehensive report this week. The report highlights HealthTech’s £13bn Gross Value Added (GVA) in the UK, equating it to biopharma. However, capital and skills shortages, compounded by Brexit, are constraining growth. The report proposes targeted tax incentives, regulatory reforms, and closer collaboration with the NHS to accelerate innovation adoption. Key initiatives include: ⭐Streamlined regulatory processes ⭐Tax reforms to boost R&D ⭐Support for early-stage companies ⭐Expansion of ABHI’s international accelerator programme to drive exports. Together, these policies will enhance efficiency and innovation, bolster investment, and create 50,000 new skilled jobs over the next five years. Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham OM KBE PC FRS described the strategy as “a pragmatic and achievable route to building a HealthTech sector that will be the lifeblood of a reinvigorated NHS.” We look forward to working with senior government stakeholders to make this vision a reality. Independent report finds Metadvice is an effective tool for reducing clinician workload having identified potential workforce efficiency savings of over £60,000 annually if used in all CVD-related appointments in a medium-sized Primary Care Practice. The report, commissioned by Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex and co-produced by Unity Insights, Metadvice, GP partners, and key stakeholders in the Sussex ICS system, evaluated the application of the Metadvice artificial intelligence (AI) precision clinical guidance tool within the Ball Tree Surgery in Lancing and Sompting PCN.  Metadvice CEO, Andrew Rut, commented “This project underscores the significant impact that advanced technology can have on the healthcare system. Our AI-powered clinical guidance solution has demonstrated tangible results, supported by both qualitative and quantitative data. By stratifying patients by risk and optimising therapy at the point of care, we have effectively reduced workloads and improved clinical practice.
