I’ll be the last person to support Farage/Reform *but*…showing the Facebook Pixel irrespective of cookie consent choice? That’s a crowded playing field!! Many (especially small) companies, just don’t understand what to do. And think installing a cookie banner on its own is enough - but obviously if you then don’t do the work of carrying out the consent choice, the cookie banner is actually *worse* than not showing one at all. Because its presence suggests compliance to your website visitors - but shoddy implementation does nothing of the sort - like some sort of phony fire alarm. Given how Facebook ads are so important (espeically to political parties) I would guess this is not a slip but is deliberate. And it’s ‘allowed’ because there are no consistent legal teeth to bite here. I often wonder why the ICO etc don’t have automated tools to scan sites* here - perhaps they should create a compliance approach. (*server side tracking would mot be vulnerable to this sniffing though)

Those of you who have followed me for some time will know how strongly and passionately I care about tackling the issue of APP fraud, where victims are tricked into sending money to scammers for non-existent products or services. This type of fraud causes significant distress to people and has a big economic impact.   Today, the Director of the Payment Systems Regulator (PSR), Chris Hemsley, is stepping down after five years in the job. I wish him all the best in the next chapter, but sincerely hope that his successor will look again at the new regulations that are due to take effect in October. In a nutshell, these new PSR rules significantly increase the burden on smaller payment system providers to reimburse fraud victims but are also likely to encourage and embolden fraudsters. Has representation fallen off the agenda? New research finds that people feel 7% less represented by the adverts that they see this year.   Several action groups have spoken about the difficulties of getting brands to sponsor inclusive events in 2024. This is despite the statistical evidence from groups like System1 and Andrew Tindall that prove the enduring effectiveness of representative advertising.   This new research makes for worrying reading, but there are two glimpses of light.   - Over 55’s were the one group that felt more represented. Given the advertising world’s fixation on the young, it’s great to see older demographics finally being shown in real and relevant ways. (reminder, they control half of UK household spending, so it’s crazy to ignore them)   - Radio advertising has seen a dramatic improvement, with 17 percentage point increase in levels of representation. The number is even higher for young people who are reconnecting with this brilliant medium. I love radio, and it’s amazing to see it proving once again the critical role it plays in both marketing effectiveness and authentic representation.   What these two points prove is that representative advertising is still very possible, and very effective. Ever been scammed? Did you hear about the #deepfake scam targeting WPP's CEO, Mark Read as reported in Wall Street Journal? Scammers used a WhatsApp account with Read's photo, then set up a Microsoft Teams meeting complete with a voice clone and YouTube footage to impersonate him. It was like a second rate heist movie. Despite their effort, the scammers failed, proving that even the slickest deepfake can't yet outsmart a sharp-eyed executive. Who knows what they'll come up with next - scams will only get more and more plausible as time goes on. As technology advances, scams will only become more convincing and harder to detect. Deepfakes can be used to impersonate not just CEOs, but politicians, celebrities, and even our loved ones. The potential for fraud, manipulation, and #disinformation is immense. Crazy times indeed, useful reminder to keep our guard up all the same.
