📝 We've updated our guidance for heat suppliers on treating their customers fairly and on handling customer complaints: https://lnkd.in/eFmHV86r Our consumer-protection scheme requires the heat suppliers for our registered heat networks to treat their heat customers fairly. This overarching principle is equivalent to that set by Ofgem in its standards of conduct for gas and electricity suppliers. Our updated guidance sets out what we mean by fair treatment when considering how a heat supplier’s actions (or inaction) affect consumer outcomes. Our scheme also requires the heat suppliers for our registered heat networks to have a clear, transparent and timely process for handling heat customer complaints. This includes providing their customers with right of recourse to the Energy Ombudsman if they remain dissatisfied with the supplier’s response. Our updated guidance clarifies our expectations about best practice in recording, handling and reporting complaints. It explains why complaints are an opportunity to learn from customer feedback, plus the importance of taking an approach based on empathy, fairness and the customer impact. We expect these areas to be key parts of future Ofgem regulations for heat networks. Disposable vapes are among dangerous items being thrown away in household waste and causing fires and explosions, putting refuse workers at risk, Newham Council and Veolia have warned. Awareness of the issue is being raised after two recent cases of explosions in the back of bin lorries caused by discarded lithium ion batteries, which are found in vapes, being compressed by the lorry’s crusher. This follows Material Focus research in May of this year that revealed that battery fires in bin lorries and at waste sites in the UK have reached an all time high – over 1,200 in 2023, an increase of 71% from 700 in 2022.
