3/4 - This coming Wednesday, I’ll be giving an inspiring Micro-Course on Data Literacy. Data can often seem abstract, so my goal is to make it accessible and tangible. Using relatable, everyday examples, I’ll bring data closer to home, making it understandable and relevant for everyone. Alongside examples about coffee and a firefighter, I’ll also share a comparison between data and one of my bucket-list travel destinations: New Zealand. Does anyone use Collections in Tableau Server? I'd like to better understand when to use them vs Favourites. I have some ideas - but each has apparent limitations. 1. Create a collection to share with different user groups. For example, these dashboards are most useful for Sales people. This collection contains what is most important to Finance. Etc. However, it doesn't seem possible to share a collection with a Tableau Group. And sharing with each user one by one is painful. 2. Create dashboard packs. Yes, even in 2024 it's not unusual to print before a meeting. There are often times when someone needs a dashboard from workbook A, a couple of dashboards from workbook B, etc. It would be great if it was possible to download a collection in one hit, creating one document. However, it doesn't seem possible to download a collection to produce one document. Do I have anything incorrect here? Am I missing something else about Collections? #tableau

Here are five ways you can inspire and really engage a data professional - Involve your data professional from the project inception - Share the business problem, not the perceived data ask - Ask how they might help solve the problem. - Ask about the data governance requirements. Scale manipulation is a data visualisation bias that affects the x axis just as much as the y axis. Here is an example of UK interest rates data, where the dataset only captures entries for the dates where the interest rate has changed. If the dataset was to be visualised verbatim, as in the example below, the x axis does not have a consistent and equal time scale. I have highlighted a 7 year period whereby interest rates remained at 0.5%, however the 7 year period is only represented by a single data point. This introduces significant bias, and misses the insight that interest rates remained consistently and unprecedently low for a long period of time. If the x axis on your data visual is date/time based, make sure that the scaling of your time period is equal. This makes the visual easier to interpret cognitively, and also paints a fair and meaningful picture of the trend, avoiding wrong insights and decisions being made. #datavisualisation #trend #interestrates #cognitive #bias #measurement #analytics

There's a saying that I love from Sally Bigwood - "graphs are like jokes: if you have to explain them they have failed". Below is a great example of where the graph shows one thing - but with a more detailed explanation is found to display the complete opposite. #datavisualisationfail

Analytics in the UK... There has been a lot of talk here on LI recently about data professionals needing to be more business savvy and vice versa... Data leaders needing to influence business leaders, data being seen as a business asset, data needing to add value blah blah blah... Many of us have been having this same conversation for what seems like an eternity, and yet we are not really any further forward... Why? What are we doing wrong (or not doing)? Why isn't The Business listening? Well, maybe, just maybe, it's time to change the record... Data will never be "given" a seat at the top table, Data must demand one! The Business will not adopt a data culture, Data must create one! Data should not have to apologise for asking questions or driving change, explain why it's not just "tech" and how it is a value creator... Data leaders should be loud and proud... Data should be celebrated and embraced, otherwise there really will be "no future" for us! So, Never mind The Business, here's The Data... Now sing (shout) after me: We're so pretty, oh so pretty, we're Data! We're so pretty...

Once it's up and running then I will swap out pieces of track for the fancy bits i.e a windmill.
