Served the profession (and in particular, the CMI's subscribers) as Chair of the CMI wef March 2020 (previous three years as Deputy Chair). The main priority over my time as Chair: helping our subscribers tackle the mortality / morbidity implications of the pandemic. Further agenda themes were improved communications (webinars and blogs), volunteer involvement (new volunteer resource pool), and international collaboration.

The CMI Self-Administered Pension Scheme Committee has released Working Paper 190, “Mortality experience of pensioners for the period 2015-2022”. The working paper presents an analysis of the mortality experience of data covering the period 2015 to 2022. It is the latest in a series of such papers that are updated annually. This is the first paper to be prepared following the publication of the “S4” Series of mortality tables. Last week, the Association of British Insurers released data showing that the average motor insurance premium has fallen for the second consecutive quarter. Whilst this is undoubtably good news for consumers, we know that many continue to struggle due to the cost-of-living crisis and the relatively high cost of insurance premiums - despite the quarterly drop, the average cost of motor insurance is still £50 higher than the same period in 2023. In 1662, John Graunt published the first Life Table, an analysis of London’s birth and death records. This became the statistical basis for understanding human mortality and predicting life expectancy, key components of the actuarial science behind life insurance. A few years later, Edward Lloyd opened a London coffee shop that became a hub for shipowners, merchants, and other business owners. Together, they developed more systematic ways to assess risk and determine premiums, a major shift from the more arbitrary previous practices. They also professionalized the concept of underwriting. Trowbridge Paper Five: Phase 3 Crib Notes for Recommendations This 1 page synopsis paper for Phase 3 of John Trowbridge’s study on #stratatitle insurance commissions and premiums for The Steadfast Group summarises the more detailed paper for Phase 3 Energising the Strata Insurance Market. In it, John chooses to say the following things for readers with short attention spans that stood out to me. That implementing his recommendations for disclosure is ‘a valuable initiative for the #strata industry’. ‘The insurance industry, comprising insurers and underwriting agencies, is being urged to investigate, in collaboration with representatives of broking houses, strata management groups and owners’ corporations, what steps can be taken to alleviate the market capacity problem. ‘Good governance and effective management are lacking in many owners’ corporations. In those cases, it is hardly surprising that underwriters may take a negative view of the insurance risk.’ ‘that owners’ corporations satisfy themselves as to the appropriateness of fees and commissions, particularly if the charges are above ‘market’ and also noting the automatic increases that in most cases follow rising premiums’. Murray Strain of the CMI Assurances Committee has written a blog "Exploring the New Normal”, which summarises key results and observations from the Committee’s latest work in Working Paper 191, “Experience of term assurances in 2022”. Highlights include exploring possible evidence of a “catch-up” of breast cancer diagnoses following the height of the pandemic and considering how the level and length of select effects compare with those incorporated into the “16” Series term assurance tables. https://lnkd.in/eTtvqg9G
