Britain's first electric vehicle factory, run by Stellantis at Ellesmere Port, is facing a significant delay connecting its 4 MW solar array to the national grid, with a potential connection not expected until 2035. This prevents Stellantis from selling surplus renewable energy, impacts financial returns, and complicates its carbon reduction targets. The delay underscores a broader issue as companies across the UK wait years to connect renewable projects, threatening national clean energy goals. 🇬🇧 UK's first utility-scale Green Hydrogen Project! 🔋 Statera Energy have submitted plans for the Kintore Hydrogen project, to be built in Aberdeenshire 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 The project will contribute to grid stability by converting excess renewable energy into green hydrogen. The first 500MW of operational capacity will be online by 2028, and the total capacity is a whopping 3GW, which could save up to 1.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Tom Vernon, CEO of Statera was speaking of the strategic location of Kintore Hydrogen as it is located behind the grid "bottlenecks and close to abundant water resources and wind power from the North Sea". This location is ideal at the ESO had previously outlined the potential of £5bn in savings to customers if grid stability projects, such as Green Hydrogen & BESS are installed behind the bottlenecks that currently exist in Scotland. #RenewableEnergy #NetZero #GreenHydrogen #GridStability #EnergyTransition

UK installs 647 MW of solar in H1 The UK government’s quarterly energy report finds solar leading the pack in new capacity terms. Meanwhile, provisional data to the end of June 2024 reveals the United Kingdom is on course to comfortably exceed 17 GW of recorded capacity during summer months. Hi SP Energy Networks, a subsidiary of ScottishPower, has announced the winners of a £5.4 billion contract to undertake the largest overhaul of the UK's national electricity grid since its inception. The deal includes up to £3 billion for new overhead power lines and £2.4 billion for new and upgraded substations, encompassing design, engineering, construction, and electrical work. Nineteen companies have been selected as preferred partners for this strategic partnership, which will run for an initial five years with the option to extend up to 10 years. The partnership is expected to unlock growth, free up network capacity, and support new homes, businesses, and clean energy projects across central and southern Scotland. Nicola Connelly, CEO of SP Energy Networks, hailed this as "the biggest overhaul of the electricity grid ever seen," stating that it will give suppliers the confidence to invest in themselves, grow their workforce, and create new opportunities for the UK supply chain. She emphasised that every pound spent will directly benefit the local infrastructure for decades to come. SP Energy Networks owns and operates over 4,500 km of overhead electricity lines, 600 km of underground cables, and 150 substations in central and southern Scotland. The company was also recently given the go-ahead to progress with a new underwater superhighway off the east coast of Britain. This announcement comes on the heels of ScottishPower's decision to double its investment in the UK's electricity networks to £24 billion by 2028, with two-thirds of that focus on grid infrastructure. The Future Energy Scenarios (FES) 2024 report by National Grid ESO has shifted from reactive scenarios to strategic network planning, presenting three pathways to achieve net zero by 2050. The report emphasizes the urgent need for decisive action within the next two years to create a sustainable, fair, and secure energy system. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) are pivotal in all pathways for decarbonizing power, industry, and hydrogen production. Demand-side flexibility, particularly through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and smart charging, is another significant but uncertain factor. Effective management and coordination across energy suppliers, distribution networks, and ESO are essential for utilizing consumer flexibility and preventing conflicting signals. In summary, achieving net zero by 2050 requires immediate and strategic actions, significant reliance on CCS and BECCS, substantial energy storage capacity, and smart demand-side flexibility management.

UK Solar Energy Update: November 2024 The UK's solar capacity now stands at a remarkable 17 GW, equivalent to 5.7 million 3kWp solar installations—an 18,000% jump since 2010! This surge began with the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme, which incentivised installations, though growth slowed after FiT cuts in 2016. However, rising energy bills and smart export tariffs have reignited interest, pushing installations higher since 2021. Today, 1.4 million UK homes have solar panels, a 4,862% increase since 2010. With momentum building, 1.5 million homes are expected to be solar-equipped by early 2025. Public demand remains strong, with 66% of UK homeowners considering solar, and over half open to local solar farms. The South East leads in installations, but the South West has the highest household adoption rate at 7.1%. The UK is on an inspiring path toward greener energy and it has never been a better time to join an exciting and thriving industry! National Grid unveils winners for £9bn network upgrade National Grid has confirmed the seven winners of its Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) projects to connect offshore wind farms to the energy network. The firms forming the Great Grid Partnership are: Construction partners – Laing O'Rourke, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Morrison Energy Services, Murphy and Omexom/Taylor Woodrow Design and consenting service partners – AECOM Arup JV and WSP The #ASTI projects form a key part of the £9bn #GreatGridUpgrade which is building the significant new #electricity network #infrastructure. #NationalGrid said the new ‘enterprise model’ is designed to speed up the delivery of electricity #infrastructure by taking a fresh approach to #UK #supplychain and skills issues. The partnership aims to #coordinate the #planning and #execution of projects, allowing each #supplier and National Grid to pool their #resources, #skills, #insights, and #experience to deliver faster and more #economically – driving value for money and benefits for both #consumers and local #communities. Grid sharing for renewables projects. Awesome!   Risky work for the EPCs though.   When multiple renewable energy projects, such as wind farms and solar parks and BESS, share a single grid connection, the benefits include; ✅ Efficient use of the electricity grid capacity ✅ Reduction in connection costs for energy developers ✅ More renewable energy projects being built   This approach also poses significant technical, legal, and contractual risks, especially for the EPC contractors building the projects. These include; 💰 Faults and failures in the shared infrastructure leading to liquidated damages 💰 Delays or disruptions in construction and commissioning leading to delay damages 💰 Increased liability imposed by their client for future action taken by the DNO for breaching exporting agreements etc   These are just a few of the increased risks and challenges that EPCs, and other contractors, are facing when building grid sharing projects.   What are your views on this and how is your business overcoming these risks?

UK Solar and energy storage industry sets out electoral demands ☀️🔋 Trade association Solar Energy UK believes that the approaching general election offers an opportunity to better harness the enormous benefits of greater solar generation and energy storage By the end of this year, the UK will have about 20 gigawatts of solar generation capacity in place, supplemented by 8 GW of storage capacity. Investors are willing to invest in UK solar and storage at all scales, although there are challenges to unleashing the capital required that only the Government can overcome.
