My #icaewchartoftheweek for ICAEW looks at what we all do for a living this week, highlighting how half of us are economically active (employees, self-employed or unemployed seeking work) and the other half are (what the statisticians call) economically inactive. The government is very keen to get as many as possible of the 1.5m people who are unemployed, and the 3.0m not working because of illness or disability, into work. This would benefit the public finances twice over by not only reducing the cost to the exchequer of welfare payments paid out, but also by increasing the amount of tax receipts coming in. Such a move may be one more step towards the demise of trusts, given that it appears that a large proportion of assets contributed into trusts now benefit from these reliefs." With an increase in retail conduct rules coming into force, the FCA had previously indicated it will consider how its rules for retail consumers and SMEs can apply more proportionately to large commercial customers.
