It means cutting down the complexity between the source and the consumer and being able to pick and choose where you apply a more traditional very high quality low latency approach and where you might make some concessions because you want to manage the margins. Interesting blog, at ALPSP, we discussed whether we should remain on 'X' at our last Membership & Marketing Committee meeting. We are staying for the moment, although making our way in an orderly manner towards the lifeboats!

Inclusivity in the age of technological advancement in TV "The UK government is to scrutinise the future of #lineartv #broadcasting, as new research shows that some viewers could be excluded from the general shift towards online viewership....The core aims of the group will be to ensure that no one is left behind amid a shift towards online viewing, and to establish a sustainable television ecosystem that works for both audiences and the industry." "Based on current trends, the report predicts that 95 per cent of households will have the capacity to watch TV over the Internet by 2040. However 5 per cent of households, or 1.5 million people, will still rely on traditional linear broadcasting by the same year, without intervention. This ‘unconnected’ group tends to be significantly older, have a lower socioeconomic status and live in rural communities. The cost of broadband and lack of digital skills are factors in preventing households from adopting Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) or programmes delivered via the Internet." Move towards #digitalising #television are gathering apace and are inevitable. However, 1.5 million being left behind is a lot and an unacceptable amount. Especially when it comes to #publicservicemedia and those people that pay the license fee expect and have a right to receive a television service, even if its #traditionaltv So, how can government help these people, the potential left-behinds whilst not stifling technological progress. It's going to insightful to see the findings of the report. Will this mean subsidising #smarttv purchases? Will there be a trade-in scheme? I was surprised to learn that as technology advances, it's amazing how many people still have SD decoder boxes, they don't throw them away. Some are those people who have these boxes are of lower income, but others just don't throw them away. What about a trade-in scheme for old decoders too? Another key point is again the license fee. If payment of #publicservicemedia was done through adding an extra payment on the internet rather on the outdated model of television license fee, there'd be more flexibility for the #tvindustry particularly the psbs on their transition to digital. That's not to say that they don't have an obligation to serve all the population regardless of connectivity, but that way they bring in the government more to help those in need of transition and make it a question of #publicpolicy, whereas right now, its very much their remit under the TV licence in the UK. #uk #mediaindustry #digitalmedia #broadcastmedia #broadcast

"An average radio spot takes 19 hours to deliver its full web response potential" I think that was my favourite takeaway from #TuningInNorth via Radiocentre yesterday. You hear the ad, but then you might be doing other things - busy life, y'know. It could be up to nineteen hours then before you go "oh yes I meant to google that!" and begin a web response. AND only 9% of web response happens in the first twenty minutes of someone hearing the ad. What this new research means for copywriting and creative executions is mind blowing. For me at least.
