Quoted in today's Financial Times commenting on the IPPR report highlighting concerns in Labour's plans for investment in the economy. It is essential for government to work closely with the private sector to unlock the huge sums of #investment waiting in the wings. Crowding-in private investment through tactical deployments of public investment can be effective, as we have seen with the US #InflationReductionAct, but creating the correct policy environment for investments to thrive is also crucial. A lack of clarity and certainty on the long-term strategy for the automotive sector, is destroying investor confidence, driving much needed private capital overseas and limiting necessary progress on the decarbonisation of the transport sector. Development and Bridging finance spreads (cost over SONIA or Boe base) since the Autumn of 2022 compressed to dangerously unsustainable levels….. With the market adjusting to a new interest rate environment reality and the prospect of rate modest cuts in 2024 it will be fascinating to see how far they recover to more sustainable levels and where they eventually settle. My latest note on Mercia Asset Management PLC covering the AGM statement of 26 Sep 24. "Positive trading, discount-to-NAV being addressed". I go into a bit of detail about how its updated strategy and reclassification as a Trading Company (from an Investment Company) under AIM rules, might go some way to reducing the discount to NAV of its on-balance-sheet investment portfolio.
