Fresh out from the ONS yesterday – Textkernel data on job ads. What the graph shows is a snapshot for each month from January 2017 to December 2023 for Large Goods Vehicle Drivers. It’s interesting just how low the figure was for January 2017 (long time ago now!) – lower than the start of Covid. And now it’s pretty low, fitting with the low volumes we’re all aware of - the RHA’s MD Richard Smith told Motor Transport, in the current article on SNAP’s survey which questions the driver shortage, that freight movements are currently down between 5-10%. The ONS spreadsheet has some explanatory notes about how the data is compiled, including: “Textkernel data is collected using comprehensive web-scraping software which downloads job advert information from approximately 90,000 job boards and recruitment pages. The scraped data includes job titles, descriptions, posting dates and expiration dates. Additionally, Textkernel provide variables which are derived from the scraped data using data science and natural language processing methods. These describe location, salary, seniority, skill requirements, home/office working, and more. Textkernel perform some proprietary data cleaning to identify duplicate job adverts, which ONS have removed in this release. Duplication can occur when the same job is posted on multiple job boards, or when multiple recruiters advertise the job at the same time.” The data is available for all standard occupation codes. Last week, Ofcom’s annual Post Monitoring report was published. The report monitors the state of post and parcel delivery in the UK and is an important benchmark for our sector. It painted a picture of an industry that continues to fail consumers. Nearly 70% of people reported issues with their deliveries, including delays, misplaced parcels, and poor driver communication. With some firms scoring as low as 32% for complaint handling— it is clear the sector is struggling to meet modern expectations. While legacy logistics providers are doing their best to improve, they’re often trapped by outdated processes and old technology. Walking the dog is a great opportunity for learning and I often listen to various books and podcasts on #audible. My latest was #HBR Insights Series’ “Supply Chain” which gives varying insights into how organisations can maximise supply chain resilience set against the contemporary disruptive challenges we’ve all faced over the last 4 years. Very briefly (!), strategies include: ➡️ revamping #JiT rather than abandoning it and #overstocking ➡️ mapping supply chains in full detail to include even the smallest upstream suppliers ➡️ planning for the “unexpected” ➡️ promoting truly #collaborative supplier relationships ➡️ adoption of #digital technologies to plan and react decisively An interesting example of the latter is #Haier’s use of the #COSMOPlat IoT platform to adopt a flexible, scalable, cross-sector transformative manufacturing capability that gets results quickly…. not least through its inclusive and accessible approach to new suppliers. #nearshoring isn’t the answer for many sectors but finding competitive advantage elsewhere most definitely is. ☀ Great first week back Unipart Logistics following on from a very relaxing holiday. 📖 Unfortunately, It's the only time I get to catch up on some of the amazing books that I have planned to read throughout the year. The stand out one this year has to be this one! The Diary Of A CEO by Steven Bartlett ANYONE in business and a leadership role I would recommend you take the time to read this and think about how you implement some of the great ideas into your business and teams. Some of the points I have taken away (too many to mention them all): 💡 Fill your 5 buckets in the right order (What you know, What you can do, Who you know, What you have, What they think of you) 😡 Never Disagree (yes coming from me) - Our words should be bridges to comprehension not barriers to connection. Disagree less, understand more 👻 You must lean into Bizarre Behavior - In a ever changing world (and industry like supply chain) you have to be a LEAN IN person/business. Taking no risks will be your biggest risk, you have to risk failure to succeed, you have to risk the ordinary to achieve the extraordinary and... if you live avoiding risk, you're risking missing out on life and new business (I added that last part Steven Bartlett sorry) 💻 (Good one for marketing) - Normality is ignored but Absurdity sells.... Avoid wallpaper at all costs! 😅 Most of all and aligned to the Unipart Group philosophy is. YOU MUST SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF. As the worlds leading Supply Chain company in Kaizen and Lean, its about day to day improvements, the 1% and compound effect it has. If you don't care about tiny details you will produce bad work because good work is the culmination of hundreds of tiny details. The worlds most successful people and businesses all sweat the small stuff!
